My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.

Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??

Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??

Legolas please gain a sense of urgency

It's because legolas hasn't spent enough time with non-elves to remember that they don't know what he knows.

gandalf is scratching his head in moria, and legolas is thinking "oh man, the wizard noticed something off *besides* the obvious balrog that we all are aware of??"

"I wonder what aragorn is listening for? must be hard to hear, what with all of the horses. How many horses are there, actually? 1... 2... 3..."

"What do your elvish eyes see?" is Aragorn saying, as politely as possible, "Because the REST OF US are at a significant disadvantage, Prince Dipshit."

all the rights that come with marriage you should be able to have without marriage btw. you should be able to designate a person who can visit you in the hospital regardless of your relationship to that person.

hyperlexichypatia

People in the notes are saying "You can!" referring just to the hospital visitation part, and sure (depending). But people should have access to ALL of the benefits of marriage without needing to be married.

You should be able to add anyone you want on your health insurance plan.

You should be able to sponsor the visa of anyone you choose to move to your home country.

You should be able to name anyone you choose as the legal-from-birth legal coparent of any child you give birth to.

You should be able to apply for student aid on your own at any age.

And yes, yes, ideally healthcare and college should be free, international migration should be unrestricted, and the entire concept of legal parenthood should be rewritten from the ground up. But right now we're talking about marriage benefits.

the frustrating thing about talking about like, why people don't have web presences outside of meta, is that... it is not a thing where people are doing this because they don't care about people not being able to access their information. meta has been successful because they figured out how to lower the level of friction involved in "being on the internet" such that people who weren't Online were able to very easily navigate Being Online. before FB you did not really get people online who weren't Online People. "just learn html/css" is a useless sentiment to express because we are talking about a systemic problem wherein insta/FB are literally more accessible for the person maintaining the web presence to manage. what we need is 1. widespread recognition that this is a problem 2. ideally open source alternatives to meta platforms which are just as easy and accessible for random non-Online type people to use and maintain information on 3. outreach about these alternatives such that non-Online people would be made aware of them & why they offer advantages to meta (people being able to get the information without making an account!)

i understand the frustration with this phenomenon. but it's not helpful to get really "oh if individual people would simply know things they do not know and then intentionally make different choices" about it because it's a problem that's been intentionally designed by meta. i know on tumblr we are all Online Freaks but like. having and maintaining a website is actually NOT as easy and accessible as having and maintaining an insta account. that's simply the truth. denying that in order to be judgmental is pointless. obviously I think it's a huge problem that a lot of information is meta-locked atm and we absolutely should be calling that out and talking about alternatives! and again! i get the frustration. but looking at the notes on that post about this, SO many people are responding with nasty attitudes about the individual people who are maintaining these web presences/implying or stating outright that it's just as easy to have a website and it ISN'T. like that's just not true! why do you think this is an issue in the first place?

this is a good reminder for people like me who are very tech savvy and into open source and alternatives to the big platforms another big problem is people don't want to pay for a piece of the internet but hosting costs money so naturally they use free services but the largest and most populous free services are free because the users ARE the product the cultures people build on there are entirely secondary to corporate profit i'm rambling but this does make me want to actively seek out or help build better options to share with my less techy friends

“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town.
“Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.”

it has since been confirmed that namaygoosisagagun first nation has completely burnt to the ground. if you would like to help the community navigate an ongoing crisis, i urge you to donate to the anishinabek nation 7th generation, a registered charity seeking to improve the lives of first nations people. donations are going directly to members of namaygoosisagagun first nation.

if you're canadian, you can e-transfer an7gc@anishinabek.ca. if you're outside canada, they accept paypal as well. see more information HERE

You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.

prokopetz

Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?

buggyhuman

Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭

woodsfae

If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!
