He needs millions of cards to make this happen & is currently receiving 1000 a day.  He speaks French so he reads EVERY card written in French himself.  His parents read him the English cards, but I can bet he'd even like to receive cards in languages he doesn't know. The further away, the cooler, I bet!  But lets everyone take a few minutes & do this.

meanwhile I stare at the snow outside my window...

Cape Bretoners were hot but likely not bothered by a brief flash of summer in November.

One of the island’s most popular summertime destinations, Ingonish Beach was the hot spot in the Maritimes Friday hitting a very summer-like 23.2 C early in the afternoon, according to officials at Environment Canada.

In fact, it was a record-setting day across the island and around the region.

Temperatures in Cheticamp soared to 22 C by 1 p.m. and with humidity factored in it felt more like 27 C, while Sydney residents saw the mercury rise to 16.9 C.

Cheticamp resident Rosie Grace said she was surprised when she walked out the door and took her jacket off right away.

“Today you could be out with a T-shirt on,” she said. “It’s very, very warm. It’s really weird. For the season, it’s quite unexpected. It’s like summer.”

Grace said the weather was certainly the talk of the community, where residents would be much more accustomed to snow flurries than beach-like conditions this time of year.

“It was interesting because the entire discussion in the drugstore was all about the weather,” she said.

Temperatures are expected to be a little closer to seasonable values this weekend with daytime highs forecast in the range of 11-16 C for today and Sunday.

But seriously, wtf is up with the weather in the world lately? As much as I love the warmth, this is not normal.

indie Heath Ledger movie, Candy

Have any of you heard of this Australian movie Heath Ledger is in? My abbreviated version: he's a heroin addict, she's a heroin addict & they are in love. A friend of mine is quite obsessed with getting this movie "out there". I just read the longest email evar! from her & so I'm going to help spread the word a little bit. I'm not a real Heath Ledger fan, but the movie looks interesting & maybe it might change my mind on that. (Trailer: http://www.dendyfilms.com.au/candy…)

Candy is a socially pertinent story that brings understanding and communication regarding the plague of drug abuse in today's world and bridges the gap between those myths and demonizations of the addicted personality and society as a whole that must be understood and overcome in order to implement solutions to this devastating and chronic problem. This film is educational, heartwarming, harrowing and raw and above all, honest. It is vital to both young and old in its message and it's incredible hope and ultimate victory over the deepest and seemingly most hopeless of addictions. It is a triumph. However due to such limited release, relatively unknown to society...

& a petition. Please sign if you so wish to help out:

There's also a forum dedicated to getting this out there & I'll send you more links if you are that interested. Let me know!

Book 21: You remind me of me by Don Chaon

You remind me of me by Don Chaon, 384 pages
Chaon recounts the horror of a young boy hideously mauled by his mother's dog, the lethargy of a small-time drug dealer, the plight of a pregnant teenaged girl, and the anguish of a grandmother who discovers her 6-year-old grandson is missing. Like any good Impressionist, Chaon brings these seemingly dissimilar people together, masterfully connecting the dots until a complete human picture emerges.

This one would have been better read in one sitting! It was incredibly written, but each chapter bounces you back or forward in time to the point of view of a different character. If you're not careful (or easily confused like me!), you might forget what you're reading about. At first. As you get into the novel & everyone becomes connected in ways you'll easily remember, its all good. Read it if you like character novels!

Book 20: She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb

She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb, 480 pages
Meet Dolores Price. She's 13, wise-mouthed but wounded, having bid her childhood goodbye. Stranded in front of her bedroom TV, she spends the next few years nourishing herself with the Mallomars, potato chips, and Pepsi her anxious mother supplies. When she finally orbits into young womanhood at 257 pounds, Dolores is no stronger and life is no kinder. But this time she's determined to rise to the occasion and give herself one more chance before she really goes under.

This book ruled! I really got lost in it & thoroughly enjoyed every page of it. It reminded me a bit of the books I read as a teen, so perhaps there was a little nostalgia in my enjoyment. Once you get past the fact that a man is writing about the life of a young girl, you'll enjoy this one if you enjoy silly, witty, disfunctional characters.

Book 19: The Sacrament by Peter Gzowski

The Sacrament: The Incredible Story of Brent Dyer and Donna Johnson by Peter Gzowski, 203 pages
On the morning of May 5, 1979, a small, single-engine plane with four people on board flew out of Estevan, Saskatchewan. That afternoon, on the last leg of its journey to Boise, Idaho, the plane crashed in a blind mountain canyon. There were two survivors - Donna Johnson, a pretty, blonde seventeen-year-old, and her brother-in-law, Brent Dyer.

The odds were high against their getting out alive. Both Brent and Donna were seriously injured and in pain. They were stranded in a remote region in sub-zero weather with summer-weight clothes, little food, and no source of heat. And as the days passed, they had to face the terrifying realization that no one was coming to rescue them.

This is the true story of Donna Johnson's and Brent Dyer's fight to live. It is the story of their communion, with each other and with God, and of their fierce struggle not to abandon hope...as the dark closed in and the cold became too much to endure.

Finishing this book this morning inspired me to get on here & do some updating! I found this one in a thrift store a few weeks ago. The fact that it was written by Peter Gzowski certainly caught my eye. A story that sounded so inspirational, from so long ago, that I'd never heard of was intriging. This is one of those books I want to pass along to everyone now & I'm very fortunate to have found it.

I did see the entire novel is posted online right here, if you're curious. :)

Book 18: House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III

House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, 365 pages
On a road crew in California, a former colonel in the Iranian Air Force under the Shah yearns to restore his family's dignity. When an attractive bungalow comes available on county auction for a fraction of its value, he sees a great opportunity for himself, his wife, and his children. But the house's former owner, a recovering alcoholic and addict down on her luck, doesn't see it that way, nor does her lover, a married cop driven to extremes to win her love and get her house back.

Oh my! This was brilliant. I haven't seen the movie, so I truly had no idea what the story was about when my sister gave this book to me. I love how it is written from the angle of the two main characters. You see all points & feel from all points. I really recommend this one.

Finished: July 26th, 2006.

(I still have a few books I finished before this to write about & I am very behind in the challenge, but I'm still going on...& always reading something!)
