Homosexuality in Britain in the 1950s and 60s

If you're a slash writer, sometimes you just want to focus on the romance and not worry about the realities of the situation. Sometimes, though, you want to know a little bit more about the social context. If so, this essay is for you.

The most important thing to remember is that homosexuality was entirely illegal in Britain until July 1967. Even if it was between consenting adults in the privacy of their own home... still illegal.

Pop Britannica

There was an excellent programme on BBC2 last night called Pop Britannica, it's a 3 part documentary charting the history of the British pop scene. Last night's was on the 50s, there were a couple of references to the Beatles there and George Martin made a few contributions, but what made me think of you guys is that it would still be a great resource for understanding the atmosphere that the boys were living in when they were forming the Beatles, Silver Beatles and Quarrymen.

I hope this link works, but if it doesn't just type bbc iplayer into google, click on the BBC2 link on the left hand side of the page (at the moment, it might move) and scroll down until you find Pop Britannica. They also showed A Hard Days Night later on, but that's not available.

The episode will be available for one week only - unless somebody knows how to download it.

Interviews, money and language

this site is a great archive resource of all their interviews, including some of the more obscure ones.

And if you want to know about how much they earned and when, then go here

Somewhere I thought I had saved a brilliant discussion page about the English language as opposed to the American language, which had the bonus of being extremely funny. Sadly I've lost it, but I did come across this one, which is also rather amusing.

I am happy to help out with queries regarding language and life on this side of the pond in general but I really don't have the patience to sit down and write an article, let alone the time.

Great idea this, well done.

60's Transportation: Roads by Gloigloi

gloigloi posted this:

It is just under 200 miles from Liverpool to London and will now take around 4 hours by car. When The Beatles were travelling the motorways were in the process of being built so some of the journeys will have had to be done on A roads. The fact that the roads were not as good in the 60s is cancelled out somewhat by the fact that there was a lot less traffic then.
These are the timelines for the building of the M1 and M6 (the M62 wasn't built until 1970, the road from Liverpool to the M6 was then the East Lancs Road.

The 70 mph National Speed Limit was introduced as a temporary measure in December 1965, before this there was no national speed limit and I remember my father trying out his new car seeing how fast he could get it to go when I was a little kid. It was confirmed as a permanent limit in 1967. I don't think either Neil or The Fabs took much notice of this although I doubt their Commer van would have got anywhere near this speed even downhill with the wind behind it. George especially was notorious for driving very fast and Paul & Ringo not much better. John only passed his test in 65 and was never a very confident driver, usually using a chaffeur. George got banned for 3 months in 63 and for a year in around 72.
In the UK 1962-63 was the coldest winter on record since 1739-1740 see this page http://www.bbc.co.uk/london/weathe… this caused chaos for travellers(including the episode with the windsceen & the Beatle sandwich remembered so fondly by Paul). Even though I was only young I remember the sea being frozen at Blackpool and our toilet being frozen up too.

Resources To Be Claimed

In order to make this community work, I am going to need help from all over the Beatle Slash Community!

Below are a list of Resources I would like to be done by either myself or other people. If you want to claim a resource to write then comment on this entry, I'll need your LJ User Name and the topic.

When it's finished post it to this journal and I will link it on this post and the profile. If you know or want any other resource articles added, let me know and I can add it to this list. Remember this is for everyone and anyone who wants to write Beatle Slash (I suppose fanfiction period, but we focus on slash. xD)
