Malware Analysis: Wiper Attack Albania - identified as Display_10.exe 📍 1. Display_10.exe An executable file written in C/C++, digitally signed (certificate name: Tengku Zamzam). The main wiper files display_10.exe was found to include strings indicating it was originally named unfreez.exe by the author. Identified behaviors: ■ Checks process privileges. ■ Creates new files on disk (with suspicious extensions). ■ Creates the file rawio.sys in the Temp directory. ■ Initiates disk scanning and file overwriting operations. ■ Attempts to shut down or restart the system using elevated privileges. 📍 2. rawio.sys A driver file created at runtime by Display_10.exe. Upon execution the wiper first drops the file rawio.sys. This file exists injected inside display_10.exe. The dropped file rawio.sys is signed by a trusted certificate. ■ Registered as a Windows service named RAW_IO. ■ Used to bypass Windows protections and perform direct disk I/O operations. 📍 3. sectorio.sys A second-level driver used by the malware to: ■ Directly read/write to disk sectors (bypassing filesystem and antivirus protections). ■ Manipulate the boot sector or destroy .exe/.dll files. ■ Function as a wiper, deleting data below the OS level. ■ Uses custom IOCTL commands to execute operations. ■ Exploits low-level disk access through unsigned or repurposed drivers. ■ Uses Symantec/Norton process names to avoid detection by security software. ■ May use the GitHub project SectorIo as its foundation: https://lnkd.in/dWbRGkAv 🎯 MITRE ATT&CK TTPs: ■ Defense Evasion T1218 Uses a signed driver (rawio.sys) to execute malicious actions. The conference will bring together key stakeholders to discuss the challenges and future of digital security in Europe. A particular focus will be placed on the Cybersecurity Maturity Assessment for NIS2 – a critical framework for organizations seeking to meet the new resilience requirements and build robust, maturity-based protection strategies rather than reactive measures.
