[sticky entry] Sticky: Names

New Latin Batrachia, formerly a name for the zoological order Anura, from Ancient Greek βατραχεια (batrakheia), neuter plural of adjective from βατραχος (batrakhos, “frog”)

Modern taxonomy seems to have bumped it up to include both frogs (modern Anura) and salamanders (Urodela), but not caecilians (Apoda) (which are still amphibians, they just look a LOT like snakes.)

Now you know.

Hello, Mystery Author! It's so nice to meet you. I firmly believe in ODAO, but on the theory that more detail is better than less, here goes!

I am absolutely a huge fan of worldbuilding and extensions of canon, in all shapes and forms. Smut is certainly appreciated, with a strong preference for f/f; het (especially canon-consistent) is more than okay, but m/m is not my cup of tea. I'm happy to see plots showcasing competence (in all forms), humor, and worldbuilding (yes, I said it already. I really like it).

Kinkwise, the following things make me Happy(tm): consensual bondage, deliberately sexy clothing (both lingerie and things that are wearable in public), and situations with intentional exhibitionism.

I'm not fond of violence for its own sake - there are certainly places and canons where it's appropriate, but would prefer not to dwell on minutiae. Deliberate cruelty to people or animals is also definitely a nonstarter.

As far as kinks go, noncon is going to be a difficult sell (dubcon might be okay, depending heavily on the context.) Deliberate use of nonsexual body products is a very major turn-off as well.

Kushiel's Legacy: (Alais de la Courcel, Berlik)
I do NOT expect fic with both of these characters; either one is more than fine. OCs welcome.

There seems to be so many possible directions to go with Alais' life - character study of being Cruithne in a d'Angeline court, or vice versa? Plus the whole bit with being a seer. Canon lightly touches on her interactions with Imriel, but for obvious reasons doesn't focus a lot on her when he's not present. Of course, this is KL, so smut in whatever form is more than welcome, especially f/f.

In the other column, Berlik was chosen by the Maghuinn Dhonn to mess a lot with Imriel's life. Canon looks at it from Imriel's viewpoint, which is...understandably biased. I want to see...Berlik's take on things. What led him to be the one to make the sacrifice that he did? what were his thoughts along the road when Imri was chasing him?

Time Traveler's Wife: (Alba deTamble)
Futurefic here, please; Alba has at least a little bit of control over her displacements, how does that change things as compared to Henry? Presumably she has many of the survival skills that Henry learned; did she learn them from Henry? Herself? Someone else? OCs welcome.

Digger: (Boneclaw Mother, Ed)
I would love to see details of earlier life in the hyena tribe; Boneclaw Mother is clearly on the top of the heap in the "present", but it probably took her a bit to get there. (Also a glimpse of Ed's life before canon plot would be much appreciated). OCs welcome.

As always, optional details are optional, and if you want to tell another story with any of these characters and/or canons, PLEASE do so. I would much rather read something that's caught your brain and won't let go, rather than have you try to mush it to fit my 'vision'. Happy Yuletide-ing!

This is a thing that exists: Apollo in Real Time. And they've set up a button for "exactly synced up to mundane time".

Excuse me, I've got...something in my eye...

These are, as always, suggestions only, and if you have a different story idea that's just itching to be told I'd love to receive it. Happy Yuletide-ing!

Hi! I'm super excited to meet you. I firmly believe in ODAO, but on the theory that more detail is better than less, here goes!

I tend towards worldbuilding and extensions-of-canon more than smut-for-the-sake-of-smut; if it's plausible and consistent with canon, by all means write it, but I'm not fond of the Utterly Gratuitous Sex Scene. If you do write porn and/or smut, I have a strong preference for f/f; het is okay (especially when canon-consistent), but m/m is not my cup of tea. I'm quite happy with worldbuilding, People Being Awesome, humor, and did I mention worldbuilding? As far as kinks go, I have a preference for consensual bondage, deliberately sexy clothing, and things with consensual exhibitionism and/or voyeurism.

I have a general dislike for explicitly gory violence (if violence is necessary, yes, but please don't dwell), deliberate cruelty to animals and/or people, and obvious biological improbabilities. Kinkwise, anything with noncon is going to be a difficult sell, as is anything with nonsexual body products.

Treasure Planet (Amelia): Backstory and worldbuilding, ideally? I'm especially interested in seeing what Amelia looked like at around Jim's age - a competent Captain like that doesn't emerge fully-formed from the woodwork. How long was she in the Navy (or local equivalent thereof)? When did she meet Mr. Arrow? How did the two of them come to be Boat Management For Hire? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Metroid (Ridley): So, okay, we know that Ridley is a ferociously determined archvillain that Just Will Not Die. I'd love to see a little more expansion of what he's like when he's not getting pummeled into a fine paste by Samus - especially if it involves some more insight into the Space Pirate logistical and command architecture. Things like the Pirate Logs from Metroid Prime - it's clear they have a well-ordered system that gets things done (at least, before The Hunter shows up). I don't much care about canonical placement - anywhere in the series will work, and elaboration on the games that were published earlier and thus have less story details already attached would be particularly awesome.

American Gods (no requested characters): America is a bad place for gods, or so it's said. Given American attitudes towards sex, how does this affect the various deities that have fertility and sexuality as domains, upon arrival? The canonical Bilquis is certainly a functional starting point, but there's quite a few others floating around, I'm sure.

Short, simple fix. Best kind.

Tag arrows now have their own CSS class "tagnav" to be manipulated at will. Go forth and stylate! Or don't. Up to you, really.

Nothing Lost

Novel-length fic. For Yuletide. And it is absolutely amazing, both in detail and in whole. Eighty thousand words of amazingly plotted time-travel gen.

I cannot recommend this highly enough. Go. Read it now.
batrachian: (Hanging Frog)
Presented in no particular order. This is a mixed bag; everything from gen to smut. Y'all have been warned.

A Balance of Mud And Sand: Kemetic mythology. I'm not familiar enough to say whether it's true to the 'facts' of canon, but the author has the narrative voice of Kemetic texts down rock-solid.

The Ramen Noodle Incident: Calvin in university. Entirely (un)predictable hijinks ensue.

Gambit: Really good anthropomorfic, with extra wrench of Making The Hard Choices.

The Last Challenge: Prince of Egypt, and an amazing capture of the utter soul-wrench that is Moses and Rameses and their estrangement.

That Which Glitters: Missing scene from Kushiel's Dart. Canon is pretty darn sexy as-is, and this fic more than lives up to.

Galaxy Gals: Dancing on the edge of meta, glimpses into the world that fandom could be. Brilliantly characterized, too.

Agatha Heterodyne and the Solstice Trials of Skifander: Brilliantly captured Girl Genius fic, with all of the zaniness of the original. Also, Jagers!

The Red-Furred League: Great Mouse Detective casefic. Cute and clever.

Collection Development: Lots of things about libraries and knowledge shaping here that I didn't know and/or think too deeply about. AND IT'S FIC.

Whole New World: Minecraft. And possibly the most glowing praise I can give on this one is that it's made me want to pick up Minecraft and play again.

The Queen Says Let Them Eat Cake: Princess and the Frog, post-canon, absolutely delightful narrative voice. TIANA IN THE ROYAL KITCHEN. Naveen being handsomely adorkable.

Confidence Artists: Road to El Dorado, OT3 fic, sweet and sexy and lovely plotting.

Mixed Blessings: Watership Down, following in the shadow of the Black Rabbit of Inle. The only thing I dislike about this story is that it ends where it does; I would cheerfully read another 5k.

Chasing A Dream: Treasure Planet, a joyous romp post-canon. Jim is a little older, a little more skilled, but just as...Jim as ever.
batrachian: (Laughing Frog)
I got TWO gifts this year. (plus one more in Madness, which, not open yet)

Sea Chord: Zelda: Majora's Mask. Lulu/Mikau. Canon-compliant, does really good things with chronology framing, and bittersweet in the best possible way.

At The Least Sound: His Dark Materials. And also, crossover with Sumerian Mythology. Because it makes sense to; I mean, Judaic beliefs and traditions did not arise in a vacuum.

Commencing my trawl through the archive - more recs and commentary to follow.
batrachian: (Hi Frog)
Hi there. Still kinda new to this whole Yuletide thing, but think I've got the general gist of it. Here goes!

I'm quite happy with People Being Awesome, humor, and did I mention worldbuilding? As far as kinks go, I have a preference for consensual bondage, deliberately sexy clothing, and things with consensual exhibitionism and/or voyeurism.

General dislike for explicitly gory violence (if violence is necessary, yes, but please don't dwell?), deliberate cruelty to animals and/or people, and obvious biological improbabilities. Kinkwise, anything with noncon is going to be a difficult sell, as is anything with nonsexual body products.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask: (Mikau, Lulu)
So there's a guitarist, and a singer. And they're in a band together, and he seems kinda sweet on her. Obviously both the group and the romance had to start somewhere, probably relatedly. Bonus points if you explain how/why Zora Hall came to be; suspiciously convenient architecture, that is.

Girl Genius: (Gilgamesh, Ardsley)
Paris! City of Lights! Adventure, science, and apparently saving Zola from...everything imaginable (and a few things that aren't). Not that Gil has exactly 'settled down' in the main story, but stories definitely paint him as a lot more...teenage during his time in Paris. I suspect that Ardsley was...trying to rein in the more egregious of Gil's habits, but to only limited success. They fight crime monsters!

Kushiel's Legacy: (Berlik)
Berlik, chosen by the Maghuinn Dhonn to mess a lot with Imriel's life. Canon looks at it from Imriel's viewpoint, which is...understandably biased. I want to see...Berlik's take on things. What led him to be the one to make the sacrifice that he did? what were his thoughts along the road when Imri was chasing him?

His Dark Materials: (Xaphania, Lord Asriel)
Canon presents Xaphania as the leader of the 'fallen' angels, but how did she get there, what triggered the Fall? Is she intended to be The Lucifer figure, or is there a separate angel running about with that name? And then she somehow ends up working for/with Lord Asriel. (which, how does THAT work, does he have a timey-wimey ball to be able to have a gigantic war-footing fortress and allies and everything so shortly after opening the bridge?) and, from what I can tell she's one of the older angels, so how'd she come to the decision to bend the knee to Asriel?

Arthurian Mythology: (Nimue, Merlin)
Nimue learns stuff, betrays Merlin, imprisons him. How, why, what was her thought process here? Possibly relatedly, seems that she's the one to give Arthur Excalibur. That's an...odd character shift, and what I've been able to read doesn't seem to much explain the reasoning.

As always, optional details are optional, and if you want to tell another story with any of these characters and/or canons, PLEASE do so. I would much rather read something that's caught your brain and won't let go, rather than have you try to mush it to fit my 'vision'.

So.

Yuletide

I got a fic! It is this one: https://archiveofourown.org/works/1100051 Still working through how it's making me feel - a beautiful story with so many implications.

The (one) fic I wrote has also been well-received. I wish that I could share which one it was, because the comment had me floating for ten solid minutes. Recip found things that I hadn't realized I'd written!

I feel like there should be more here, but, well. Still new to this whole 'Yuletide' bit.
batrachian: A frog, probably of South American vintage (Default)
I don't mind sharing, but want to have at least some idea who I'm sharing with. :)

Please comment to this post if you'd like access (and don't have it). Some content is currently Private while I reorganize things. Mind the dust.

This is my first time participating in Yuletide, so. Um. Yes. Hi! It's nice to meet you.

On any of these, if you have a story that you want to write and it doesn't quite fall in the lines I've drawn, please, write yours instead. <3 These are intended as guidelines, not a straitjacket.

Signal-boosting, because I've read through the entire series so far in the last day and it's amazing.

Daemorphing, by [personal profile] joking

Fusionfic (if I've understood the term correctly), reimagining the Animorphs canon as if they had the daemons from His Dark Materials. Goes substantially AU, but for solid reasons.

And it's just amazing.
