You know, when I’ve remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.

Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go “I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]”, that was a bit. What do you mean they’re teaching kids a reading method that’s tailored to produce this exact error?

Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense 😭

This was one of my introductions to military history. I was 14 and haven’t ever really looked back. Big fan of star forts and Vauban.

Star forts like this were constructed after gunpowder became common in warfare! The elevated position plus the angled walls were designed to make it harder to just blow a hole in the wall with a big cannon, which is what happened to a lot of pre-gunpowder fortifications.

One of the funniest quotes early on in the AI bubble was an executive saying he was replacing workers with AI because “AI will never demand higher wages or else they’ll go on strike” and it was so fucking clear that he hadn’t thought through how anything worked, because of course the AI companies can raise their rates and if you don’t pay then they don’t let you use their software.

Isn’t this straight out of Walmart’s playbook? Lure customers (businesses with human employees) over with low prices and put all competitors (human employees) out of business (employment), then they’re free to charge whatever they want for their shitty products (lying electricity-hogging chatbots that cannot actually do a human’s job).

I’ve known for decades that capitalism is bad for workers and consumers, but only in the past few years have I come to increasingly realize that it’s bad for businesses, too.
