imagine that your favourite band was on a generational run of albums, putting out 10/10 after 10/10, four singles a year you'd bet money on becoming classics of the genre. now imagine that between every record they also released a full length album where they covered jingles from cereal commercials and songs by white youtube rappers about five nights at freddy's, and these releases got a hundred times the promotion and airplay as their normal stuff: that's what it feels like to enjoy magic the gathering

this would be a killer noun phrase to include in the title of a light novel that takes place in some extremely distorted version of the mtg multiverse. something like:

the idea that sex scenes in movies are somehow wrong or should be removed makes me really annoyed. i have absolutely seen movies where the sex scenes added nothing to the plot and could be taken out, but for every shitty movie where the sex scenes exist for sex appeal only there is a Mulholland Drive where the sex is deeply important to the story and deeply revelatory of the characters’ internal worlds. i keep having people tell me that they think the filmmakers should just ‘imply that they had sex’ or similar as though the only point of a sex scene in a movie is to demonstrate that two people have sex! i am sorry but if you are a grown adult and think that sex scenes in movies are somehow gross or icky you need to take a really serious look at the way you view the world and the moralizing and puritan standards you are playing into. also the person who told me this was a lesbian who I went to pride with this year who was visibly uncomfortable with furries and people in leather etc. queer people and people on the left are not immune to this, and the sort of puritanical attitude that this represents is making you an actively worse member of your community

There's really this strong temptation that everyone has which basically says "to have interiority is to be like me; ordinary people are surface everywhere." And this manifests in different ways in different spaces, and becomes really pronounced when you cluster together with similar people. So tumblr users often act like straight people don't have any interiority because it helps you feel the deepening of social bonds with other gay people. This happens professionally too. I think it was Summer or Sharks who was saying that programming people think that intelligence is just being really good at writing code. Not surprising but very strange to me! I am (equally ridiculously) used to thinking that intelligence is being really good at philosophy, having command of a lot of sources that you can use creatively, etc. This reflects a kind of dynamic on tumblr and reddit. On reddit to have interiority is to be a science guy and on tumblr to have interiority is to be a humanities girl (and the dynamic is gendered in exactly this way). And I think there is something dangerous about habitually regarding other people as automatons. It's good to have people outside of your niche to remind you that other people from different walks of life are quite deep and complicated. They are full of love and fine grained attention to things you never thought to care about. And I think a lot of people go through life thinking of themselves as perpetually victimized by basically empty people rather than having genuine confrontations with full, genuine people who are committed to subtle, complex and real values, who have detailed and intricate histories, and who have a bond to you that you might never quite fully understand. But we rarely even try at understanding these things. We just decide that they're stupid and ridiculous and unreasonable.
