Hugenotlar nəslindən olan babası, Nant fərmanının ləğvindən sonra Fransadan qaçmışdır. O, Liçfild qrammatika məktəbində Samuel Consonun rəhbərliyi altında təhsil almış və 1737-ci ildə müəllimi ilə bərabər Londona köçmüşdür. O, səhnə debütünü 1741-ci ildə Şekspirin "III Riçard" tamaşasında baş rol oynayaraq etmişdir. 1747-ci ildə Druri-Leyn kral teatrının direktoru olmuş və 30 il bu vəzifədə fəaliyyət göstərmişdir.
