My lastest crafting project: a human being

There are some folks here not on other social media like Facebook or Twitter that may not know - during Hannukah I gave birth to Rúben Manuel Cabral. In Hebrew, Reuven Emmanuel. We had a bris earlier this week. Everyone is healthy and well and healing, and I have paid maternity leave until the end of March.

Pic under the lj-cut 'cause that's how this works.

Rúben means "behold, a son" - fitting because we didn't know what sex he was going to be born as, and Emmanuel means "God is with us" - also fitting, because we feel a higher power, a sense of wonder at nature and the universe, with a baby around.

Conference wifi stinks...

The internet magically works in the speakers room, and it's quiet and there's power. I may never leave! except that now would be a great time to pop over to the office to print some stuff out before 5 pm Pacific.

Boston fermentation festival

I am at the Boston fermentation festival! The kraut mob is cool, but I would have liked to see more supplies sold (not just the product). I need some more airlocks!

I'll get to some more substantial updated soon. I'm going to a conference in SF tomorrow so it's going to be light and sweet until the conference is over. But I promise I will share plenty of stuff - it's mostly good, too!

Anyone know Bruce Schneier?

So, for the 100th episode of OurSQL: The MySQL Database Community Podcast, we got Randall Munroe of XKCD. For our 200th, we'd like to get Bruce Schneier (we're on episode 167 now, so we have time).

Anyone out there with personal connections? We can contact him via info on his website, but we'd love to do it via friends-of-friends if we can.

Words of Wisdom from a friend

This is something a friend wrote, that I felt needed a wider audience. Note that this was in a specific group of mostly-women, but there's no reason it doesn't apply to all people.

"We do not become friends with strong, amazing women because we don’t ever need help; we become friends with strong, amazing women because they can help us, support us, and actually care about us. In return, we care about them, and we are upset if they don’t feel that they can share low moments with us. And (this is the important part) being friends with strong, amazing women actually means that we are all strong, amazing women who sometimes need to vent, or need a helping hand. This does not make us any less strong, or any less amazing."
