The first kiss happened as an accident.
They left the hospital side by side with their usual weariness, trying —and failing— to leave behind the ache and suffering, instead latching onto the good things, onto the patients they could save. They stopped by Mel's car, moved in for a quick hug and a kiss on the cheek, but he leaned too far to the right; she pushed up too much on her tiptoes and lost her balance, and suddenly they were kissing.
It was fleeting, lasting no more than a couple of seconds. They both laughed it off and moved on.
The second one wasn't.
He knew he'd gone looking for her at the ambulance bay during a break for no reason other than to be near her, to hear her voice, to watch her face shifting through a million different expressions as they talked. They were just mumbling silly things when, just before the break ended, they were kissing again.
Frank wasn't sure who leaned in first, who pressed harder, who parted their lips, deepening the kiss.
And then it kept happening.
It wasn't a secret, but none of them talked about it. None of their coworkers teased them, started betting pools, or called HR on them.
So he wasn't sure how Abby found out.
He finished his shift, kissed his coworker silly against the driver 's-side door of her car, and climbed into his own. When he pulled down the visor to fix his hair in the vanity mirror, he was showered in glitter.
Something smacked him square in the forehead before fluttering into his lap, a card that read: “CHEATER”.
