This morning, Microsoft Australia and the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) announced a landmark Framework Agreement that puts workers’ voices and skilling at the centre of Australia’s AI transformation.    AI is reshaping our economy at extraordinary pace. Done right, it can unlock new productivity, strengthen industries and create better jobs – representing a $115 billion opportunity for Australia by 2030. But that only happens when workers have the skills, confidence and voice to help shape how AI is used.    Together with the ACTU, we’re committing to:    🔹 Share practical AI learning with union leaders and workers through formal training and resources  🔹 Create new channels for worker input into how AI tools are designed and deployed  🔹 Collaborate on responsible AI policy and skills, ensuring workers are ready for the jobs of the future    This is the first agreement of its kind in Australia and builds on the Government’s new National AI Plan. The AI governance gap was the defining conversation at ADAPT CIO Edge yesterday. Over 180 of Australia's top CIOs and IT leaders gathered in Sydney to tackle the biggest challenge facing enterprises today: AI adoption is outpacing governance. As ADAPT CEO Jim Berry highlighted at #CIOEdge, two critical lessons stood out: 1) If we don't train people to use AI, they'll get replaced by people who can. 2) AI won't scale as an IT project. It needs CEO mandate across HR, risk, and cyber. The consensus? Organisations are seeing AI usage faster than they can govern it, then scrambling to retrofit controls. As one Exec put it: "You can't govern what you can't see." Another shared 1 IT-approved Gen AI tool, 2 sanctioned by the AI Steering Committee but 11 are in use by employees. Blanket bans don't work. When you take away responsible AI use, people will use it irresponsibly, in secret, in ways you can't govern. Jim's message was clear: urgency must turn into action. But you can't train people or change operating models without the infrastructure to govern AI safely at scale. The Island Approach: Visibility + Control + Enablement: ✅ Full Visibility: See every AI interaction, from SaaS-embedded AI to custom LLMs ✅ Choose Your Own AI: Enable each user to choose the right AI for the task with granular data protection ✅ Enable Agentic AI: Drive business outcomes in the browser while maintaining governance guardrails ✅ Audit & Compliance: Log and monitor all AI usage for regulatory requirements The answer isn't to slow down AI adoption, it's to embed governance from day one. The traction from CIO Edge was incredible and the momentum continues to build.
