Barbara Luz reposted thisBarbara Luz reposted thisFor decades, we’ve relied on database architectures from the 1980s. They are monolithic, expensive to scale, and create massive vendor lock-in. But as AI agents and cloud-native apps take over, "business as usual" isn't fast enough anymore. Databricks just introduced the Lakebase—a 3rd generation database architecture that separates compute from storage using open formats and it is now GA on Azure. Why does this matter? Serverless & Elastic: Imagine a Postgres-compatible engine that scales to zero when not in use but handles massive spikes instantly. No more paying for idle "peak capacity." Git-like Workflow: You can branch or clone a petabyte-scale database in seconds. Testing in production-grade environments is now as easy as branching code. Open by Design: By storing data in open formats on cloud object storage (like S3), the "data jail" is gone. You own your data, independent of the engine. The AI Edge: AI agents need to spin up and tear down environments instantly. The Lakebase is built specifically for this level of agility.

Barbara Luz reacted on thisBarbara Luz reacted on thisHad a great time today at the Databricks Perth Learning Festival, a great compliment to what I saw at AI Days Melbourne with our own Perth spin on the content. It was great to meet so many amazing customers and hear about the cool stuff they are building. The day started with Barbara Luz opening the day sharing how Shell has used Databricks to unify OT and IT data across more than 600 data practitioners. We were lucky to have Simon Peter Johnston for the keynote who shared how we can use the AI Gateway to practice responsible AI, and stop agents from going around and deleting production databases. Jan Haak introduced the open security lakeside, showing that the only way to defend against AI attacks is to play AI on defence too. Luke John built on this, exploring how Atlassian operates at petabyte scale across thousands of users to get quicker insights and answers. Jack Freeman kicked off the product sessions with showcasing how Genie can figure out how your business works when you ask specific questions about your KPIs, Ramneek Sharma explored improving the developer experience with Lakebase, and Adrian Tompkins showed the ease with with you can build, deploy, and govern all your AI agents. I ran the afternoon training session where we got to get hands on with Genie Code and vibe out an entire Databricks platform. The room was buzzing with energy and the conversations were flying from the get go, no warm up needed, just straight into the good stuff and sharing between Bricksters. A few things that really landed for me: 🔄 The paradigm shift is real. We're not just talking about AI as a concept anymore, it's here and in production. It's reshaping how we think, build, and deliver. Watching this unfold in real time never gets old. 🔐 Security & Governance aren't afterthoughts. With everything we're implementing, getting the foundations right isn't optional, it has to be from the get go. 📊 Classic ML isn't dead, it's the backbone. Traditional ML and modern AI are better together. Unity Catalog is the thread that ties it all into one governed, discoverable platform. Huge shoutout to Simon Peter Johnston and Jan Haak. The insight on how security needs to be fought from within AI agents themselves was a standout moment. When it comes to agentic AI, you can't bolt security on from the outside, it has to be built in from the start. Now back to thinking about what's next for our Insurance Data Platform at #RAC the next chapter is going to be something special. Enterprise AI has proven what’s possible. Agentic AI is still proving what’s reliable. The next phase is about building what holds - the architecture, the operating model, the governance, the platforms that turn capability into outcomes at scale. Including the question tokenomics is quietly forcing onto every P&L: where agentic cost stops being non-labor and starts being labor. Not slideware. Not a tax. A system that lets the next wave of AI land as enterprise capability, not a pile of pilots. Grateful to Shihong Tan and the leadership team for the trust. More as it takes shape. Barbara Luz liked thisBarbara Luz liked thisIt's been a whirlwind first month ramping up running the Field engineering team at Databricks here in #perth. The last few weeks I've been meeting our teams in San Francisco and Sydney, and today more of the team at our learning festival in Brisbane. The platform has evolved enormously over the last few years, and old friends have come out of the woodwork since the news got out about where I was going. Two reactions stood out: #1 — "Awesome product, I spend at least a couple of hours in it every day now." #2 — "I feel like I'm missing something there. Hard to see that a managed Spark has much legs still?" Two very different perspectives — and to be fair, #2 was my own view back in 2019, when Databricks first crossed my desk at Amazon Web Services (AWS). Reality: for the folks who know it and use it, Databricks has become incredibly powerful, and — give it a go — deceptively simple. Five-plus years ago, helping customers stand up data platforms was clunky and complicated. In Databricks, it's now six clicks. I left Amazon excited to found First Mode Australia and then take over as CEO at Switch Technologies, but always carried a quiet FOMO about what AI could do once you got it sitting next to the data and into the hands of the people actually running the business. I've been away from this side of tech for a few years. So if you've been hiding under a rock like me (or my friend #2 above) and you're in #Perth — come along to our Learning Festival on Thursday at the convention centre (link below).
