      AEP Rationale

      AEP Rationale

With a population of over 1 billion people, with one sixth of the world’s arable land, Africa is one of the richest and most endowed continents on earth but is fragmented into 54 weak and small markets with different systems and conflicting policies on matters of common interest to the continent and thus marginalized in global affairs.

Although Africa is one of the fastest growing regions in the world at present, the growth appears to be fragile, jobless, and based on distorted factors rather than sound economic fundamentals. Growth rates of less than that of the GDP, increases below 7% are not yet high enough to bring about a substantial reduction in the widespread poverty.

Growth for 2016 for the continent is still projected for around 3,7%, against a lower global average. We must remember, that we need average growth of 7% and above to achieve the rapid structural
transformation necessary to create prosperity and a better life for all Africa’s peoples. Africa is responsible for a significant proportion of its developing finance, as more than $527.3 billion comes from domestic taxes compared to $73.7 billion received in private flows and 51.4 billion in official development assistance (NEPAD and ECA, 2014).

Not more than 1% of seafarers and just 1.8% of ships globally are African owned, whereas over 90% of Africa’s imports and exports are conducted by sea. The economic value of the Blue Economy for Africa is estimated at over one trillion US Dollars, with hundreds of thousands of job opportunities for young African women and men.

The volume of intra-African trade has increased from $32 billion in 2000 to $130 billion in 2011; with increased diversification in manufactured goods, intra-African trade has huge potential trade to support Africa’s industrialization and structural transformation.

Welcome From The Host Country, Mauritius

The Goverment of Mauritius is honoured to host the inaugural launch of the African Economic Platform from 20 to 22 March 2017. I am pleased to extend a very warm welcome to all participants in this high level event which will focus on innovative ways and means to increase Africa’s prosperity.

As one of the core Agenda 20163 flagship projects, the Platform seeks to foster greater integration, increased socio-economic development and enhance the confidence and the commitment of Afican as owners and drivers of Agenda 2063.

The Forum will bring together the political, business and academic leadership of the continent to ideate, discuss and agree on concrete actions to take forward the transformative vision of Agenda 2063.
I look forward to your participation in this exciting initiative envisioned in Agenda 2063 as we strive to make Africa what we want it to be.

      Mauritius Island

In the heart of the Indian Ocean, 800km to the east of Madagascar, lies the crown jewel of the Indian Ocean -the majestic island of Mauritius, known officially as the Republic of Mauritius. It is a volcanic island of lagoons and palm-fringed beaches with coral reefs surrounding most of the coastline. A coral reef barrier encircles almost the entire coastline, with the exception of the southern end, where it falls away and where wilder waters and dramatic cliffs can be observed. From the northern plains, the land rises to a central plateau dotted by lakes and extinct volcanic craters. A few uninhabited islets area are scattered around the main island.

Passport & Visa Requirements in MAURITIUS

A visa is an official acknowledgement issued by the Immigration Office/Embassy/Consular of Mauritius, indicating that your application to enter Mauritius has been reviewed by an Immigration Officer and that the officer has determined you are eligible to enter or transit in Mauritius for a specific purpose. A visa, therefore, simply allows the bearer to travel to Mauritius up a port of entry and does not implicitly guarantee right of admission into Mauritius. The final decision to admit a non-citizen rests with the Immigration Officer after examination at the point of entry in Mauritius. He/she decides how long the person can stay for any particular visit.

Visas and Extensions of stay are issued free of charge.

      Introduction to the Inaugural AEP

One of the lessons learnt after the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the OAU/ AU was that Africa has to take charge of its development if it is to meet the expectation of ever becoming “An integrated, prosperous and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena.”
The continent needs to set its agenda and take responsibility for its development, to find African solutions to our challenges and mobilise domestic and other resources for its needs, based on a set of ideals and priorities that reflect the values and aspirations of Africans.
