Links to support Gretchen Felker-Martin and Jeff Spokes are at the bottom of this post. Please read the full post if you can!
ok so Red Hood has been cancelled because of GFM's posts about Charlie Kirk. I feel like many people on here have worded why exactly this is so horrific much better than I could, so I won't get into it much, but I will say: even if you, the person reading this, do not personally like GFM or did not like how she wrote RH#1, you should not be celebrating this cancellation. it is a horrible fucking precedent to set and only serves to silence a trans woman who harmed nobody with the specific posts that got her fired. her posts have no direct bearing on the actual content of the book that she was hired to write; and if you didn't like her writing, you didn't have to buy it! advocating for its cancellation and celebrating it is a step too far, and is also just idiotic on a pure comics front. like even ignoring all the ethical reasons why GFM getting fired is screwed up, ongoings get new writers with time. that's how they fucking work. why would you advocate for the run itself to be cancelled if you like this character? there was no good reason for her run to be cancelled after a single issue, simple as that. it's horrible that this happened.
I spent the last hour looking for potential ways to get the cancellation reversed. it's a long shot but we shouldn't be silent about this. I saw some people mention contacting DC editorial (general contact links are here and the contact info for editor-in-chief Marie Javins is here; her email is marie@mariejavins.com if the link doesn't work), so please do that if possible. Let them know that what they did to GFM isn't acceptable. I haven't seen any sort of petition floating around, but if anybody finds or creates one please let me know. If anybody has additional info wrt sending messages to DC editorial or the creation of a petition feel free to add it in a reblog, or send me the information in an ask or DM if you do not want to share it yourself.
If you haven't been pirating all of DC's stuff already this is the time to start. Sales will always matter more to a company than social pressure or backlash; and disregarding whatever happens to the RH book, it's important to stand behind GFM and stop giving money to DC after they fired her. They've always been a shitty company ofc, but I think a lot of people are hesitant to stop buying comics from them because they want to support individual artists and writers, in which case: many of them are writing/drawing for other comic companies besides the big two, and lots of artists do commissions; some writers and artists even have a Patreon if you just look them up! supporting them directly or through their other works is an option. there is no reason to keep supporting DC.
What's most important is to support both Gretchen Felker-Martin and Jeff Spokes. You can support GFM directly on Patreon here, and buy some of her novels here, or wherever you buy your books from. You can buy art from Spokes here. Please do whatever you can. This isn't a hopeless scenario; there is always good to be done. And please support the trans women in your life. Please be there for them in this very terrible time we're living through. Thank you.
