Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-Wook) gets involved in an unexpected case that leads him to travel back in time to the year 1938. There, Lee Yeon meets Ryu Hong-Joo (Kim So-Yeon) again. She was once a guardian spirt of a mountain in the west, but in 1938 she is the owner of the best high-end restaurant Myoyeongak in the capital city of Gyeongseong. When Ryu Hong-Joo met Lee Yeon for the first time, she was fascinated by him, but she couldn’t have him. Now, she meets him again and she feels excitement. Lee Yeon also meets his younger brother Lee Rang.
Meanwhile, Cheon Mu-Young (Ryu Kyung-Soo) used to be a guardian spirit of a mountain in the east and he used to be friends with Lee Yeon and Ryu Hong-Joo. A case led Cheon Mu-Young to become hostile towards him. Lee Yeon struggles to go back to the present day where his loved one lives.

Nik Apr 05 2026 1:07 pm I demand a 3rd season! :) S1 was great, I finally watched S2 now and what can I say ... I love it, too :) Wonderful production, cam work and costumes and acting.
I noticed one or 2 minor flaws in the script (without spoiling: there should have been twice as much dynamite), some flashbacks could have been omitted but all of that won't spoil the fun at all!

Lee Yeon's character was fantastic!!! It was nice to see he and Lee Rang spend most of their time as loving brothers. Bravo to the writers for really developingall the characters in this season!!! You can't help but fall in love with each character. There were some episodes that dragged but over all it was good. Hoping for a season 3.

I enjoyed season 2 more than the first one. It’s got the right mix of humor and fantasy.
Am I the only one who isn’t that fond of the mermaid girl? Her character annoyed the heck out of me that I wanted to forward all scenes that she was in lol.
Why kim beom is not coming? Jun 15 2023 12:44 pm Why is kim beom not wanting to be back as lee rang? Maybe because his character is not main one like lee dong wook and repeatedly doing secondary characters does effect an actor's market value? I seriously wish lee rang played by kim beom returns and if he doesn't want then add a new character like him with someone as good an actor as kim beom because for majority viewers it was ldw and kb who made it the show what it is.
But how is it clear that kim beom won't return?
It was a shock in ep 12 when mooyeong is alive. S3 without lee rang would be so sad but if they maintain same humor and production quality as s2 then s3 should be made. S1 was actually quite dark and non funny too, s2 surpisingly was different.
Kim so yeon's character was one of the best female characters written in dramas, she wasn't there as a flowerpot. And she did it so well at times hong joo felt like a real person and not an actor.

Lee Rang never fails to captivate us with his charm and great acting! I hope there will be a Season 3 since Lee Rang has just discovered his power surpassing that of Lee Yeon ( as what their father has told) ! And with the firstl mountain god who stole Taluipa's thousand miles eyes, looking forward to a new adventure of the Fox brothers as well as Mu Yeong and Hong-Joo (I love them both as I just discovered how great they handled their role here ) along with Goo Shin-Joo, Yuri and Jang Yeo-Hee!

Love the mountain god trio their chemistry was very good and I hope season 3 will focus on them and their story along with the original mountain god’s backstory? My fav character is Hong joo she is so cool, pretty, smart, strong and tsundere!! Hee character was so well written, her stylist needs a raise. I hope she can accept moo young!! Great series, not a single boring part, all eps got good flow, good pace and so fun! Good balance of action, comedy. But some parts of rang n yeohee can be a bit draggy. Sorry a bit broke the momentum of the fun parts! But they are cute too just their parts could be better written :) Season 3 with same casts from S2 Pleaseeee I need more of hong joo unnie ?

Thanks for the memorable ending of TOTNT 1938 (Season 2). You all must have worked hard.However, from Season 2 there is still something that is propping up in the hearts of us, the viewers who still can't move on from this drama series. How about the first Mountain God? it's still annoying. Will there be a chance for Season 3? Kim Boem has said goodbye to his role as Lee Rang. Sad!! but I understand, that means the answer is that Lee Rang will not be reincarnated if there is Season 3 later. I hope Lee Dong-wook and the other cast members will still want to continue their roles in the future. And hope that Woo Hyun-Jin as Yeo-Hee will play a role again, to remind about the love story of Lee Rang & Yeo-Hee. Treating the feeling of losing the role of Lee Rang who has said goodbye. And of course it's more about the friendship of the three mountain gods and the answering of our questions about the first mountain god. Maybe if there is a season 3 there will be a plot twist from Kim Boem, like what Jo Bo-Ah did, HAHA hoping again to be a cameo even though he has said goodbye. :) That's my hope for this drama lover...
Lenny Jun 13 2023 8:39 pm Star-studded cast, I really love the additions of Kim Soyeon who played Ryu Hongju and Ryu Kyungsoo who played Muyeong. I can say I enjoyed season 2 a lot better than season 1. They really stepped it up and focused on friendships and the brotherly bond between Yeon and Rang. I loved how they explored more of the complexity behind Lee Rang's character too. Honestly I'm glad JiAh's character wasn't in this season. Her character during the first season annoyed me for some reason.

I guess the mountain god from North is Mu-Young; from West is Hong Joo, from East is Lee Yeon, and the god from South is the one still in the folk cultural village (from session 1). Maybe good idea to bring abroad the god from South to Session 3. It would be fun to watch the 4 direction gods fight against the original god :)

LoveThisDrama Jun 12 2023 7:25 pm Wow.. this is a perfect drama in many levels: the script, the casts, the production, and the ending. It is entertaining from the beginning to the end, brings all emotions, and have a satisfying ending. Kudos to the whole production!
I like the 3 mountain gods, each of them is charming in their own way. I like that they make the stronger one is the female god; good choice! KSY plays Hong-Joo role very well; strong, smart, confident, beautiful, and caring. RKS as Cheon Mu-Young plays his role very well too, as a broken and longing god and cannot escape his inner truth as a kind (but sad) and caring person. Above all LDW as Lee Yeon, as expected, never fails us. The two versions of Lee Yeon make it even better! Love them both!! LDW works so hard for his roles in this series. His act is a level higher in this session than last one. He is smarter, funnier, handsome and helplessly charming throughout the session! His interaction with his brother Le Rang (on which Kim Beom played very well) is a top notch!
The episode that touched my heart the most is episode 11, with a heartbreaking message delivered with the shoes, dialog between the fox brothers while making dumplings, and other dialogs. They are so touching and meaningful.
No choice, the drama must be continued with more sessions! There are so many potentials for the script writer to explore! Make this like a marvel movie, keep coming back with a different and richer story. Lee Yeon can keep going back to a certain period in the past to be together again with his brother and other gods for another adventure! Let’s keep the Tale of the Nine Tailed fox continue!

Teume Jun 12 2023 6:32 am I really liked this season more than Season 1, where the interaction of the 2 foxes was a lot I liked when they met, caring for each other. I know Lee rang really likes his brother.Especially in the ending, Lee Rang's cry broke out when saying goodbye to Lee Yeon. And he told his brother that he could take care of herself so that he wouldn't have to worry anymore. I became sad. Besides, I'm relieved Lee Rang and yeohee ended happily. I like Kimbum more and more, he looks so adorable here and is handsome. His flagship smirk really makes me fluttering hehe The point is I like the acting of all of them, Shinju who sacrifices a lot but never misses his cuteness, especially when he has started to befriend the bandit and the handsome dog. Then this is the first time I've seen Kim So Yeon's acting, actually, she has seen that she is very talented. There is no need to doubt the acting. Likewise with Ryu kyungsoo, even though on the varshow show he looks very stiff and shy but he acts no less cool. I like it. for Lee dong wook I like him, the funnier and the nicer. But for me, this drama should still need a season 3, right? :D There is still a lot left unsolved. What is the news of the original mountain god? When he was like he had risen up and taken the eyes of the taluipha but didn't do much just look from a distance? Hopefully there will be another season, really I really enjoyed this drama

I like very much the chemistry of the mountain god trio and Lee Rang being independent and stronger is a fun to watch. Now that they've established how strong the original mountain god is, I think it should be the whole gang together. So please jebal make a season 3 with this cast... and additional ones you'd like... but this cast is imperative haha :D

So who is the 4th mountain god from South? And whats his animal? Moo Yeong Brother actuallya claimed that he was original mountain god, the origin of 4 mountain god, so wheres the last mountain god? I tought it will be explained or showed at the end of season but still no answer

Or maybe hire another good looking actor like kim beom and throw in his bromance with lee yeon like similar one in this show, it's hard to replace kim beom as he is a very good actor and can't see anyone doing his job. I do not know how the writer could managed writing this kind of fully mixed of every genre. Anyway this drama was really amazing. This drama was not boring for a bit even. Actually this drama could trepasses the season one of The tale of nine tailed. The acting was brilliant. The story was impressive. I am really recommend this drama to all kdrama lovers. I think lee rang is kind of a tough and ruthless guy with a soft heart, but mostly he is rude and tough, he was quite harsh on mermaid too in the beginning but the way he has been pushing himself to be so kind to her feels quite unattractive for how his character has been, also the girl is too overly girlish and stuff , i agree his love interest should have been someone tough and fearless who would'nt be needing his validation every other second, like yeo hee is always looking towards lee rang like a puppy asking for attention and she is clinging on to him, someone a bit like hong joo but less clingy with tough personality and someone who doesn't seek his attention and loving glances all the time and someone with whom he had fights and arguments with simmering chemistry beneath thes surface would have been perfect. Here even tho she saved him but her constant aura is of damsel in distress instead a strong powerful girl with funny bickering with lee rang would have been perfect where he doesn't have to change himself when he is with her I cringe so hard in their romance scenes and skip them all when i never skip a scene of the show. Yeo hee should have been writtebn differently,no complaints with the actress but with character which doesn't match lee rang.

I honestly like Lee Yeon better with Hong-joo instead of the previous female lead!! She seemed kind of off to me. Also I know a lot of people liked Lee Rang and Yeo-hee but I'm honestly not a fan ! Their romance seems really unrealistic and forced. He just doesn't seem like he can be himself around her. She seems to have unrealistic expectations and seems too focused on finding her perfect love and less on understanding who he really is. I think he should have been paired with someone who can relate to him more (the half-blood thing is kind of cliche on its own), maybe someone with more of a strong or fearless/bright personality? Or maybe someone calm and serious who can kind of lecture him in a humorous way? I feel like they put too much emphasis on Lee Rang's romance and it should have been a smaller and lighter aspect.

This is an awesome, funny and entertaining drama ( with Goo Shin-Joo around too) ! Lee Dong-Wook and Kim Beom never failed with their superb acting, not to mention how they fit with their role! And, I just found out Ryoo Kyung-Soo's great acting here! And also, I love Hong Joo (Kim So-Yeon) ! If only Lee Yeon could choose Hong Joo, she deserve to be love as well! And btw, I prefer Hong Joo over Nam Ji-A. Jo Bo-Ah's acting is so lame in Season 1 and she has no chemistry with LDW!

Future kdrama star May 29 2023 3:44 pm Season 1 was great there's no debate. season 2 is great and I will definitely rewatch again. The humor, the history and the horror of 1938 makes a great story! I'm learning about the different gods and demons from Korean folklore. The acting is great too. I wish it was 16 episode instead of 12. Episode 7 was so unique and funny. I was on the floor laughing and wow at the throwback cameo! The fight style was "rustic" LOL. I dont want to spoil it but the director-nim is trolling the viewers LOL. i hope 1938 breaks the 10% viewership.

Also glad s1 actress isn't there, my concern is if they make s3 it will be present timeline likely so will they again bring in old ji ah? No hate for her but it would be great if they replace her like they changed arthdal chronicles cast.

This season is really much better than the 1st season, no boring part at all, the plot and the characters are so interesting and fun to watch! Except for the CGI, the production team needs to take note and should provide a better CGI tho.

Not just about a demon wreaking havoc that is going against the gumiho protagonist, its also about other kinds of gods and half demons which makes the story even more hooking.
