Set towards the end of the Joseon era, Sung Yi-Gyeom (Kim Myung-Soo) placed first in the state examination and he now works at the Hongmungwan (administrative and research department). He doesn't have a goal or ambition for his life. One day, Sung Yi-Gyeom is caught gambling. As punishment, he is assigned to work as a secret royal inspector. His job is to eradicate illegal acts and corruption by public officers. He carries out his new job with the help of Hong Da-In (Kwon Na-Ra) and Park Chun-Sam (Lee Yi-Kyung). Hong Da-In is a female inspector and solves cases with Sung Yi-Gyeom. Park Chun-Sam is Sung Yi-Gyeom’s servant. Park Chun-Sam is talkative, affectionate, and tearful.
Meanwhile, Sung Yi-Beom (Lee Tae-Hwan) is Sung Yi-Gyeom’s younger stepbrother. His father is a nobleman, but his mother is a slave. Due to his mother's low social status, his father does not accept him as his real son and he is barred from having certain opportunities. He opposes his older stepbrother Sung Yi-Gyeom.

Lee Sep 24 2021 5:32 pm First 4 episode is a little bit hard to get through as it s still in 'introduction to the characters' phase. After that it gets better and i enjoyed the chemistry of the trio, and the main couple. I am glad i didnt give up after ep4. I like the investigations that are not too deep diving in conspiracies. And how there's not too much angst and indecisiveness when old lover pops up (which is too cliche in other dramas) Old lover is 'old' for a reason. A very good choice of drama when we are looking for lighhearted, not draggy on the romance part and some laughs (the comedy parts are actually on their expression, need to pay attention to them and you will get it).

KST Aug 30 2021 11:11 pm I just finished watching royal secret agent. Actually I watched this because of kim myung soo (L) as I am a great fan of him. Anyway this drama captured my love . It was really interesting. The plot story is amazing with suspence and curiosity. Their investigations was pretty cool to watch. Apart from the story their acacting was superb. Kim myung soo,kwan nara and lee yi kyung and all the other actors act very well. This is my first time seeing lee yi kyung and kwan nara in a drama. However their acting was amazing. I really like to lee yi kyung's acting. It was very funny !!! I think he is a good comedian. After watching this I cannot wait to watch waikiki as lee yi kyung 's there. I hope to watch it soon! I think overall this drama is good although it is so underrated . I really enjoyed watching this series !!! RSA is a fine drama with full of action, comedy ,love and suspence. So try to watch this if you are into stories with all action ,comedy snd suspence !!!

Laura Jun 22 2021 8:41 pm Okay I don’t know why there’s so many negative comments (I’m pretty sure most of them come from people who solely watch romance and never change it up) cause this was such a cute drama. It has an interesting concept with the Royal Secret Agent, and I think the plot developed well as the show went on. There’s a reason the ratings get higher as the series goes on. This drama is definitely more investigation/comedy than romance but overall still a very fun watch. All the characters have interesting and relatable personalities that mesh well together in the show and create good chemistry - a realistic chemistry that more people can relate too! I recommend this show if your more in the mood for some romcom !

It's very slow and repetitive, and I find all the brother's plot useless and boring, it doens't add anything (if you take off all the brother-other girl story, the plot would be remaning the same). I appreciated the comic relief, that was really good. The romantic part could have ended better, but I actually like how it is developped

I agree with you about this drama mainly being about seeking justice, and that's what made it interesting. Apparently, the writing sucks which makes the characters look stupid. You say it's for mature viewers? Haha! It's actually for those who need not comprehend or think more about the drama, "childish" as you say.
I've just finished episode 14. While there are scenes which make me praise the trio for their wit, it right away vanishes after another scene which makes them look stupid. A royal agent who's a swordsman and has risked his life many times, but doesn't carry a sword?? Apparently, it didnt look strange for anyone to be carrying a sword (his brother and other bandits, even noblemen). So, why can't he? He could have avoided so many unnecessary murder attempts to his life if only he was ready to fight in the first place. These unnecessary murder attempts are quite annoying. And about his servant, there are so many scenes when he always try to fight those who badmouth or hurt the royal agent, the king, etc.. But is he capable? He can't even fight! He can't even throw a punch without getting hurt first. Although his bravery is commendable, he just looked more like a fool. This is what i meant about the characters being stupid. It's sad that the writers made these characters look stupid just to be funny. And if these were funny to you, then maybe you're the childish one. No problem with that as long as you've enjoyed watching ;)
Anyway, just my two cents about the show. You need not tell me what genre i should or should not watch. You're entitled to your own drama review, as am i.

Noren Feb 14 2021 12:03 am This is such a stress reliever drama to watch over the weekend after a stressful week of working/studying. Igyeom, Dain & Chunsam trio chemistry is the best! Oh, Royal Guard Choi & Royal Secretary Jang characters also good & funneyh. A drama full of investigation with a great amount of humour. Hoping for more romantic scenes between Igyeom+Dain but yeah, since the title itself is about RAG, of course they're focusing more about the job, hahaa. Anyway, one of the best drama I've ever watch and am gonna miss this drama a bit since it already ended :(

I appreciate also the plot, it is good, but i dont really like the loce story thing between the leads, its somehow missing something. But good thing they have a good supporting cast, special mention also to Myung Soo, ji hoon, royal hall cast, tae-whan and soo min with other bandits, as they did justice to their role.
But kodus to Yi Kyung, he is such a good actor. Hope to see him in more projects.
Abee Feb 07 2021 11:03 am it was slow in the first 2 episodes but it picked up after that, the story is really interesting and funny, it almost remind me of watching naruto as the the team go around different villages to fight injustice and crime LoL. The trio friendship is really cute and hilarious and i love that the drama wasnt focus on loveline but more on their teamwork. Lee Yi Kyung is really funny and he brighten up the scene everytime, Myungsoo is ok too but he has some room for improvement especially in his facial expression, and Kwon Nara proves once again that she is good, she has a lot of crying and emotional scene which she nailed eveytime, her intonation and voice were amazing and even in comedic scene she perfectly potrayed her character, overall the 3 chemistry is really good, i love the drama a lot!

Historical dramas in a nutshell --> Everyone is literally stupid and falls for everything because everyone just takes people's words for everything because that's the only proof they have other than random words on paper which apparently holds so much truth and talismans and stuff.

Reddy Jan 19 2021 4:56 pm I honestly thought that this drama will go downhill after watching the first 4 eps. And apparently, I'm wrong. The plot just keeps on improving. The story is now developing well and you can really see how the actors really matched well with the roles that they play.
I really love that it's not just a story of romance, but it's a story of justice, pursuit of dreams and brotherhood (Relationships). I love every mini story within the bigger story. highly recommended!

Lol, Actually Kim Myungsoo trained martial art since his previous historical drama Ruler, also in interview he said that he even more trained martial art for Royal Secret Agent drama.Of course that's why the fighting scenes are captivating to look. You should fact check before assumptions.

NM Jan 15 2021 5:34 am Since the first two episodes, I knew immediately that this is the type of drama that will solve case after case with one big mystery to wrap up the complete story. I like the execution overall, though there are some cringey scenes but it's still very okay, lovable and worth to watch. Kwon Nara in hanbok is so beautiful -- I can't help myself to scream when seeing her for the first time in that gisaeng house.

I was watching Episode 1 to 5 on the first day. Episode 6 and 7 for the 2nd day. Can't wait for the next episode until the final. Great production!!!

He's portraits his character well and his martial arts are adding awesome color to fighting scenes. This is not his first time in action related drama(Modern drama black cat). So no surprised. Also he's damn handsome like an anime character. Amd his seservant waikiki actor is so funny. Their comedy scenes are the best. So great so far. And ratings are good too.

Yeah, there are plenty of plot holes, and actors take time to grow on you, but honestly, I am enjoying this show. Almost died of laughing when Dain and Sung Yi Gyeom fought who got the best acting when sung yi gyeom had seizures.. almost died of laughing when chunsam claimed he was the royal secret agent.. also i laughed when he was laundrying the baby's poo.. am gonna watch the next episodes till the end! Royal Secret Agent Fighting!! Its not poorly written.. maybe the subs translation into english were poorly made..
R.Kim Dec 30 2020 10:30 pm Second week's episodes are escalating in terms of truth being revealed of mining gold for the greedy noblemen/ministers. While I understand why the script for this week is poorly written, I'm appreciating the fight scenes of Yi-gyum especially when he uses a broken long rope to fight back.
I know Da-in becoming a hostage is upsetting some viewers of expecting her being a capable fighter, one must not forget that the younger sheriff always goes after her, and not Yi-gyum. Despite being a swordsman, that sheriff always use unfair/dirty tactics especially whenever he sees Da-in unarmed; this shows how low he has stoop towards being a monster after killing peasants and that courtesan (though I'm hoping it's not too obvious because we don't get to see the face of the killer; wonder if the writers are pulling a little plot twist like what Kim Soon-ok, but a plausible, believable version).
I'm tolerating this week's writing for it's been redeemed with Yi-gyum's fight scenes and the comedic timing of Choon-sam calling his master's name unconsciously along with their bad teamwork while disguising as guards.
Preview shows the obvious, but I hope it doesn't take one whole episode because the Bandits arc (shown in a special preview) seem to be intriguing. My guess/prediction is that Yi-gyum's brother is killing evil/corrupt noblemen for obvious reasons: 1) to avenge Soon-ae from being accused falsely by those dirty men; 2) to make the servants have freedom from being abused/taken advantage of by those noblemen.
It'll be an interesting conflict where we may see Yi-gyum's way of serving justice (he doesn't kill the sheriff immediately, believing punishing by the King will make the bastard pay 100 times than a fast death) being in conflict with his brother's (killing bastard noblemen without getting taken in alive and have judgement by the King).

R.Kim Dec 25 2020 1:41 am First week of this drama has wise storytelling in terms of being rare. When I mean that, usually in 90% of sageuks you'll see a main character(s) who is a either a prince or soon to be king of the Royal Family. Here the main hero is just mere nobleman who doesn't have any connections with highly-ranked noblemen/ministers.
So it's refreshing & seems original to me; Don't know why there are people stating this show is unoriginal unless they meant about the era. Oddly enough, it's true this Royal Secret Agent system exists during the Joseon era around 1500s so you can't deny this fact & say this premise is unoriginal.
One more good thing about this show is that the main heroine is mysterious & I love her personality of being in need of info/money regarding her family's honor to be restored. Plus, she doesn't fall for main hero at first sight for she sets her goals in solving her past. I hope she doesn't turn into "a prop for male characters to fight about" like what Ruler of Mask or Hwarang did. I hope the writing about her character keeps her involved with the investigations and not just being motivated to be an affectionate object.
I'm glad to know there'll be no love triangle though that might be with main hero's ex-lover(?) but I'm feeling the romantic development between him & main heroine is appropriate, though mostly consists of snarky comments of each other, for it's not cheesy or predictable like RoM/Hwarang ➡️ "Why do you like him/her suddenly? You only like her because she's kind or pretty right?"
Glad to know main hero doesn't fall easily for main heroine because that would be bland. Though with her courtesan looks, it's amusing to see him scoff at her like she's his soulmate for he still remembers her looking down at him for being an assistant advisor. Now that's how the romance development is far better than the two dramas I've mentioned up there.
Also there's no loud screaming or overdramatic scenes when it comes to serious plot points. It's kept simple & not too grand, but it's enough for me to appreciate the serious moments as it balanced well with the humor emit by not one, but the main trio's actors manage to emit such appropriate emotions at appropriate timing. Yeah, I don't know why there are people saying this show reeks of mood whiplash. ?
And finally, this is the best role of L/Kim Myung-soo's so far because he really looks comfortable portraying a sneaky-and-cheeky-but serious-when-need-to-be nobleman. Again I don't get why there are some viewers saying him acting in this role seems off.
I can assure you I once forgot he was a Kpop idol & when you compared him to his other sageuk role, that role was really, really awkward & he look tortured(?) acting in there but probably because of the underwhelmed/lackluster dialogue & writing of his character he had to put up with. Here he acts comfortably as if his real personality really fits this character. And yes, he made me laugh with his character being snarky & haughty in a likeable way; that waterfall scene where he gets flustered, it's best and mind you I'm rewatching first week episodes everyday before the new week starts. It's funny because I had to agree I misjudged him that he can't pull another sageuk character; but unexpectedly, this role is his best so far IMO.
So hope I can see good reviews on official sites though I know the next several weeks are gonna be challenging & I have to keep low expectations because I once had great expectations of RoM/Hwarang so hopefully this series gets well-received in regards with an absence of convoluted plot holes & complicated plot progression. But I can assure you the main actors really portray their roles well done. ?

I love every time I see her onscreen. her acting is on point. myungsoo and nara have oozing chemistry especially on EP 2. so far I love this drama. I love the comedic parts, romance parts and the investigation parts. it blend so much and it fit my ideals on a historical drama.
