After the death of the Crown Prince Lee Kak's wife, the Crown Prince transports 300 years into the future and arrives in 21st century Seoul, South Korea with his retainers. In the present day Seoul, the Crown Prince meets Joo Se-Na, who has an uncanny resemblance to his deceased Princess.

Past
Lee Kak (later played by Micky Yoochun) is the Crown Prince. When he is ready to marry, Lee Kak wants to marry a beautiful woman. Boo-Yong (later played by Han Ji-Min) and Hwa-Yong (later played by Jung Yoo-Mi) are sisters. Hwa-Yong, the older sister wants to marry Crown Prince Lee Kak, but her father makes it clear that younger sister Boo-Yong will marry the Crown Prince. Hwa-Yong is so upset, she uses an an iron to burn Boo-Yong's face, pretending it was an accident. Now, Boo-Yong carries a big scar on her face. Eventually, older sister Hwa-Yong marries Crown Prince Lee Kak. Time passes and are now adults. Younger sister Boo-Yong is now a smart woman, good with needlework. Older sister Hwa-Yong is uneasy that her husband, Crown Prince Lee Kak, and Boo-Young get along well. One day, Crown Prince Lee Kak wakes up in the early morning. He finds that Hwa-Yong is not next to him. He feels something strange about the situation and calls for an eunuch. At this time, an eunuch comes running to the Crown Prince and informs him that Hwa-Yong is found dead in a pond. Lee Kak suspects that his wife's death is not by accident. He puts together a team to investigate his wife's death. When the team awaits to interview a witness, a group of assassins appears and chases them. Crown Prince Lee Kak and his men are chased to the edge of a cliff. The group jumps off the cliff.

Present Day
When Park Ha (later played by Han Ji-Min) was young, her father remarried and Park Ha gained older step-sister Se-Na (later played by Jung Yoo-Mi). When their parents left for work, older step-sister Se-na despised having to take care of her younger sister. One day, while younger sister Park Ha sleeps inside a truck, the truck suddenly departs. Even though Se-Na sees the truck leaving, she turns around and pretends that it isn't happening. Time passes, younger sister Park Ha is now living in America. While, Park Ha sells fruits as a sidewalk vendor, Yong Tae-Yong (Micky Yoochun) sees her and feels a connection with Park Ha. Yong Tae-Moo (Lee Tae-Sung) appears in front of Yong Tae-Young. They are cousins. The following day, the two men boards a yacht. While the boat is sailing, they have a small fight and Yong Tae-Yong falls into the water. His cousin doesn't attempt to save Yong Tae-Yong and actually attempts to hide evidence that he was there. He then jumps into the water and swims away. At this time, younger sister Park Ha receives a phone call that her family has been located in South Korea. Park Ha travels to South Korea and learns that her father has just passed away. At her father's funeral, Park Ha meets her step-mother and older step-sister Se-Na. Park Ha has no memory of how she was separated from her family. Park Ha settles down in Seoul. One night, when she comes back to her rooftop room, she discovers four men, in Korean traditional clothing, sitting in her room.

  1. "Rooftop Prince" takes over the SBS Wednesday & Thursday 21:55 time slot previously occupied by "Take Care of Us, Captain" and followed by "Ghost" in May.
  2. First script reading took place at SBS Ilsan Production Center on February 1, 2012. Prior to the script reading main actors has a camera test in traditional costumes.
  3. Filming for "Rooftop Prince" began February 4, 2012. On February 7, 2012 a traditional wedding scene was filmed involving child characters of Crown Prince Lee Kak and Sena (see images #3 & #4 in Image Gallery). Filming for this scene took place Gyeonghui Palace in Seoul.

Ara Oct 14 2025 8:11 am I just finished watching Rooftop Prince again, for the 8th time! T_T This drama is so beautiful from episode 1 to 20, every scene still touches my heart. Today (October 14) is the last day it’s on Netflix, and I feel so sad to see it go.

Please, to the director and writer, make Rooftop Prince Season 2! We really love this drama in Indonesia! Same actors and actresses, please come back, we miss you!

It's not a kdrama. It's a day time afternoon soup opera. FL acting like she has an iq of an 8 years old. I love Han Jimin but script made her like a handicap.

I hardly finish it, It took me so long.

I love the history itself and love the couple Park Ha and Crown Prince/Yong Tae Young, there love story is light and atlast at the coming last part of the series. Truth all sets them free. It was relaxing movies to watched with. Its story is worth watching for. Miss this couple Park Ha and Yong Tae Young hope both of you had a movie or series again. I love those series youd been sharing together, its lovely, simple yet cute couples, more projects to come for both of you, #Godblessed love love from Philippines ?? here. ???❤️?

The three young men with the King deserves a big Applause, they are so adorable in their innocence and devotion to the King. The main Actresses and support Actresses are superb. They all played their Roles magnificently. I am sorry that Park Yoo-chun cut short his Acting Career. Nevertheless, I admire his Acting in this drama. Hope to see you more in period Dramas. People talk about CLOY, this one is as good as CLOY! Top cast overall but the 2 leads, so powerful, intense. I loved Park Yoo Chun and Han Ji Min, strong acting, chemistry between the two, emotional. I am totally in love with both actors!! Han Ji Min, so sweet and so pretty! I am sure i will watch this series again. I strongly recommend to watch it!!

Jini Aug 28 2020 4:15 am One of the best kdramas of all time like moon lovers..rather I'd say moon lovers kinda resembles it, honestly. A perfect storyline, great blender of past, present, comedy, love, time travel, mystery solving everything..I dont get why recent dramas don'thave such great storylines as this kind of great dramas. My prince Yoochun looked too much cute, adorable and handsome here that I was literally pausing the scenes and trying squish him through screen..lol! The ending broke my heart so hard that I was almost having a breathing problem. There are very few kdramas that made me cry like hell & it was one of those! It was a bit long & rather than dragging some unnecessary plots, they could have made the last episode longer and not that heartbreaking. The aura of the drama will remain in my heart for quite a long time...definitely recommend it! You'll fall in love with the yoochun prince and come to stan the couple hard! Happy watching!

Skate Jun 26 2020 4:42 am My favourite K-Drama of all time! It is the whole package of fun, hilarious, romantic, sweet, sad, intrigue that can make you laugh and cry like crazy. The love story between the two leads was built up beautifully and very touching. Love transcends time. The ending is bittersweet and still stick into my heart until now. I had cried a lot every time I re-watched it. oh its OSTs are amazing too.

The cast had done their job perfectly. Yoochun might not be as handsome as other famous actors but he won my heart with his charm on screen and nailed it with his great performance. Han Ji-Min was great too. Her crying scenes made me tears up. The crown prince’s sidekicks were hilarious, smart and adorable. You’re gonna love them.

However, as long as i love RTP, the drama contained some flaws but I was okay to ignore it because what it gave me is beyond my expectation. LOVE IT TO THE CORE my Rooftop Prince.

The native accent of the Crown Prince in modern -day times was really cool....really shows us how far we have come from the past to the present.The Prince's crew,nailed it with their comedy moments.Great acting!

Wooshikie Pabo Feb 13 2020 9:36 am To be honest, the antagonist story is quite boring and not that fun but all the romance scene and comedy scene is so funny and fluttering. I keep skipping the antagonist part, but i always reply the romance scene, their chemistry is so on point. The scenes are fresh even though its from 2012. The Crown prince's gang is so hilarious and they were so cuteee. I love it And the ending though, it's quite good. Even though i keep crying because of it.

Spoiler alert,

I fell so heartbroken cause the Crown prince became alone, their love story is broken me apart. But i love it so muchhh

Also I am a little upset the Chairman/Grand Mother of Tae Tae-Yong died and what about the real Tae-Yong . Spoiler Alert in this part at the last episode am a little confuse at the Cafe Scene is that the real Tae-Yong? Is he Alive? Did he get switch with his Highness? Because one moment he was there then suddenly the Court Prince was there?

It is a lot of nonsensical things, beginning with the crass ignorance of Director: Shin Yoon-Sub and Writer: Lee Hee-Myung about "reincarnation". This is a lost time for any right person. I do not recommend it. How come this series could be accepted by the Korean population that is so literate? Repetition until satiety. Stupid argument, stupid characters, stupid filmation. But as it progressed, I couldn't contain my annoyance with the main characters Tae Yong (prince) and Park Ha. I felt no pity towards her (maybe I am just mean). OK your "sister" doesn't want to be your sister. It is sad, get over it. I understand Park Ha's anger towards Se Na because of what Se-Na did in the past and present. Yeah Se Na is not the best person. Park Ha is a victim but her actions are so annoying. Crying everytime and wants to date the prince that is not of your time.

The prince is the worst. His rudeness and sense of entitlement is his character. I understand that is how royalty of the joseon era thought, so that is acceptable. But I personally can't stand entitled characters. He goes around like he us smart and a better person than everyone else. While he uses Se Name to fulfil his plans and dates Park Ha. You can't ruin someone's life like that. He wants to marry Se Na and then leave her to go back to his time. Really now? Not cool. I can't support a character that hypocritical and selfish. That's the worst combination. The most annoying part is that both Park Ha and Prince Tae Yong are portrayed as inherently good and other characters such as Se Na and Tae Moo as pure evil.

Se Na and Tae Moo are my favourite couples. They don't try to make the viewers like them. They ate backstabbers and liars. That is who they are and they accept it.

Yes the story gets repetitive from like episode six. That is how most older dramas are. I didn't expect to be blown away by the plot. It is what it is and it achieves what it sets out to do. It is good story. Could have been better.

  • I am just really pinicky about characters. I don't like when the decision on who to hate and like is chosen for the viewers through scripting or directing *

Rina Jun 02 2016 12:29 pm I stumbled upon this drama after watching several other k-dramas. I was indeed amazed and impressed by the story line, acting, cinematography, sequence, in fact... EVERYTHING! I loved the transition between past and present-- kudos to the staff and story writers for that. It's not your typical boys meets girl and all that cliche stuff. It's hard predicting whatever's gonna happen next. I definitely felt a roller coaster of emotions. One minute, I'm laughing and the next I'm annoyed and then I'll find myself crying! The story was kinda frustrating at first but you won't be disappointed because in the ending, you'll know that everything was done for a reason. This is without a doubt the best K-drama I have watched. TIP: Stick till the end of the drama series. Don't give up on it. You WILL have answers to all your questions at the end ;)

Lia Feb 16 2016 7:56 pm This story is really good. I laugh so hard, I cried and fell inlove in their characters. Though the ending part was indeed heartbreaking, I still love it. It shows that true love is worth waiting for. Boo yong's character is a symbol of true love, what makes it heartbreaking is when she sacrifice her own life for the crown prince. I also love the riddle ''What dies despite living and lives despite dying''. I don't expect that herself is the answer. It makes sense why she was destined to be reincarnated. The ending gave justice to the whole story. Kudos to the staff and the artists. ☺☺ now, it makes me sad coz i'll be missing Park yoochun.

mosbah Jan 22 2016 3:36 pm It was a great story ,and it was a successful tv series I just finish watch it from 25 days and till now I feel sad and lost from this ending ,I was surprise for it was made in 2012 and till now no session 2 or a tv movies to continue what happen at the end .i hop they will make session 2 or just tv movies to return in time and save boo yong. because boo yong is the symbol of Innocence , purity and the true love ,she was maltreated and took her dream since she was a little girl then let her die in night alone with a broken heart ,it is very injustice and touching story . all successful movies or tv series make part 2 or part 3 or more and till now i wonder why there is no part 2 for it

I miss this drama so much already... it was a very funny, sad and hearbreaking love story. I really love the ending, I think it was a really great ending cuz Tae Yong and Park Ha finally got to meet. And also Tae Yong (reincarnation of Lee Kak) finally woken up to meet the girl that he liked when he saw her in America. But to be honest the ending that I was hoping for was for Boo Yong not to die cuz its really heartbreaking to see Lee Kak alone without Boo Yong or Park Ha (reincarnation of Boo Yong). but at the same time I really didn't want the four guys to go back to Josean time. I just wish all of them could live in the same century. for Boo Yong to be with Lee Kak and for Tae Yong to be with Park Ha along with the 3 other guys. I hoped that Boo Yong would still be alive and be with Lee Kak and the other 3 guys to live happily in Josean time. And for Tae Yong and Park Ha to live happily at the roof top along with the 3 guys ( I wish these 3 guys was reincarnated too). nevertheless it was almost a perfect ending.. I also hope this would be continued to RoofTop season 2 cuz I miss all of the already :(

(spoiler) I just think the part where park ha runs in front of the car before the bad guy (very slowly) attempts to run over the prince was really fried and just an unnecessary part to add drama and extend the drama to 20 eps. It probably could've been well delivered in 16 episodes or so. Also I dislike how Park Ha's character changes throughout the drama, she is funny, animated and independent in the beginning but after she gets with the prince all we see is her crying and being a typical "damsel in distress." Also why couldn't boo yong just take the damn persimmons with her and chuck them out or something?!

I wish it didn't end:/ why Isn't there a season 2 :'( i felt the ending was perfect although I kinda disagree with some of the interpretations. I mean at the end they showed us his hands behind his back Which is a signature move of Lee Gak and when they held hands they showed us the transformation into his royal robe! AND he started crying!! I mean why on earth would someone weep when he saw a stranger that he fancies cry -.- Unless! That person actually meant something sentimental to him! Which brings me to my point that in gave Lee Gak's soul actually lives through Tae Yong, That's why he says even after 300 yrs I still love you. I Could watch this drama a MILLION times and never get bored,it's perfect. I LOVE PARK YOO -CHUN!!He's AMAZING he made me cry every time he cried :'( and Han Ji -min is gorgeous in every way as well, they make a perfect couple on screen <3

I think it's because you don't understand the ending. The ending makes sense and I think it was beautiful. If she went back to the past or he went back to the present it's kind of unrealistic. It is the 300 years later version of Lee Gak. Lee Gak and Pak Ha have to be back in theirs eras-past or present, where they belong. I like how in the end they said that they will live each other even if 300 years passed. Am I the only one who thinks the ending makes sense and thinks it's alright. BEST BEST DRAMA EVER !!!! SO FUNNY TOO!!! The funniest drama ever. I laughed every episode!

Even though they are supposed to be the same soul, he is just not the same "him" that she fell in love with. And she also loses the other three guys...they became her friends, and they all became like a family...but she loses them too when they go back to their time. This would have been a drama that I would have wanted to watch over and over because I love the rest of it, but the ending was too sad for me to enjoy it a second time :(

However, what took them 20 epis to figure out, i got that in the first half of the series and just waited to see how it was unfolded. A little draggy towards the end. The antagonists character has been shown to be so pathetic, that i pitied them. Seriously! Do people like that really exist... if it's true then thats really a shame.

Also the two girls in the neighbourhood solve are of no use and unnecessary characters.. And after all the ending is completely confusing and disappointing

I thought sometimes that this is scene was waste but in the later part it has something importance that would make the story more amazing and entertaining. You will really hold to the story.. The moment he scold other people for lies, did he look at himself where he pretend to be Yong Tae Yong just for his own sack. At that scene, really feel ashamed for him. In other side,look at character Park Ha if she really have a kind heart, she will go away and won't appear to spoil the wedding. So I think Park Ha also have her evil side. What can learned from this movie is the real evil is the person who hide their evil character to lie people by physically showing they are good. And this is most happen in the nowadays society. Its proved from the comments can see most people are supporting main characters which are angel face but evil heart.

He said wanna marry Se Na but meet Park Ha behind.. Which girl will not jealous? Although I not really know how glamour those actors but in this movie is not fair blaming all the fault to Se Na. Hopefully next time the director choose more prettier girl for main character. Not sure the reason why Han Ji Min being chosen. So disappointed.

The four men who travelled from the Joseon Era, Crown Prince Lee Kak, Song Man-bo, Do Chi-san, and Woo Yong-sool were hilariously entertaining as they adjusted to modern life in Seoul. The antagonists, Yong Te-moo and Hong Se-na, powerfully impacted the story, with their selfish, evil behavior. Yong Tae-yong (Lee Kak) and Park Ha were great together. Their verbal sparring and cinematic chemistry were enjoyable to see. The parallel lives (reincarnated lives) of the characters from the Joseon Era and present day Seoul was an especially interesting element in the storyline. Memorable, heart-warming scenes were continuously sprinkled throughout the drama. There are so many favorite scenes, it would be impossible to mention them all. I felt the ending resolved the time separation as well as possible, leaving a positive affirmation of the devotion Crown Prince Lee Kak and Park had for each other. And at the end, I preferred focusing on hope for the couple. My favorite aspect of this drama was being able to see Park Yoo-chun. He is very handsome and an incredibly talented actor. This drama is wonderful. It is one of the best I have seen. I like it well enough; I know I will watch it again in the future.

Park Yoo-Chun and Han Ji-Min had a good chemistry and it really touched my heart when they were together and the ending omg the tears streamed down my face. Lets not forget about the amazing acting from Lee Tae-Sung and Jung Yoo-Mi. They did a pretty good job as the "antagonist" in the story really made me hate them for all they done and thats what I call good acting. Brillant cast and interesting plot recommend it.

So why not try again in their next life. It was sad to see them get separated in the end when the crown prince went back in time. But knowing that his re-incarnation is there to be with Park-Ha gave him peace. This is a great rom-com drama all in one.

aliesh Jan 31 2013 1:29 am I hope SBS will recognize the request to have a season 2 before Park Yo Chun enter the military. Though, the ending was so good but it feels me sad because they were separated after the case resolved as Pak Ha lives in the present day while Lee Gak in different era . If you may continue the story through all your mind , It sucks and really hurt because they really miss each other, they're just continue reminiscing the good memories but no chance to see each other. If there will be season 2, I hope the writer/ director will do a good and have happy ending, a clarity between Pak Ha and Lee Gak or Pak Ha and Tae Yong. Please.. have a season 2.. Episode 20 ( ending episode ) hangs the story what happens next.. Thanks.

The whole plot was brilliant! Having those two eras combined into one soap is really Interesting to watch. The reincarnation theme of the soap was fantastic! The only gripe I have is with regard to having the villains arrested. Tae Yong had nth chances to have Tae Mu arrested. Se Na's lies are so obvious. Nevertheless, it's an awesome series!!!

Good job to the cast and to my new crush Han Ji-MIN!!!!!! :)) SEASON 2 PLEASE!!!

For some reasons I feel really hateful with the antagonist cast, they really play well with their character. and really enjoy with 3side actors who help Lee Gak and many funny things happened between them. But some how there's a point of the ending that still left question mark to me. I mean like, so which one that Bak Ha meet at N Seoul Tower? lee Gak or Tae Yong? Because suddenly he's like changing the outfit, and the matter is, the one Bak Ha loves is Lee Gak, she never knew Tae Yong because of the accident that happened to him. Well, indeed Boo Yong left a letter to Lee Gak that she will always love him how many years. But still, not make sense that Bak Ha suddenly love Tae Yong and feel mellow when she meet him and BAM YooChun change his outfit to his king char in Joseon era?franky say, QIHYM the one who also has travel time like this at least makes it clear that JHW back to modern Seoul to meet with YIN even tho still "how come a person in Joseon able to live in 2012?" and another difference that he can't use his mobile phone in Joseon time, but Chi San able to use his mobile phone at the end? *even tho only to listen a song, still that's kinda weird*

Well, drama is drama, can't make it like reality one, but at least please make it a little make sense to make it a little bit "real". So far I do really enjoy this drama, so keep a good work to all the cast in this drama..! ^,^

I really enjoy watching all the characters here especially the 2 main characters..Lee Gak and Pak Ha, hope there will be a second part of it because we love the story as well as the characters..Go for Lee Gak and Park Ha..love you both :-)

(Just dont read the spoiler :D) Rooftop Prince is not a typical long winded AND predicted love story. There is a pinch of humour and thriller and not forgetting a really sweet romance. Still not convinced? Watch it NOW. U won't regret ;) kudos to the cast members , production team and singers for this wonderful drama <3 it has been months since I finished this drama and I still think about the silly acts and romantic scenes of rooftop prince pretty often :')

Mary Jul 30 2012 6:12 am One of the best 2012 Korean dramas I've watched, I enjoyed the whole story, characters and moving between two periods. Yoochun's actor ability is so great. I can't realized defernce between old and new accent of Korean language but he was just a real prince. The ending was the most logical ending i could wait for,although it was not my ending but I'm greatly OK with it.

Plus Yoochun's three sidekicks are so cute, very funny and irresistible. Story-wise, excellent! The ending was fine. And cool. I wouldnt wish for any other ending. I think it's nicely done, at least for me. It reminded me of the movie, The Lake House. For those who havent seen this series, do yourself a favor. Watch it! Laugh hard and fall insanely in love!♥ Highly recommended. :)

LISA Jun 20 2012 3:48 am Hmmm I don't know... I only watched this for Yoochun, so like most other girls on here I acted like a delusional, blind fan. It's a good drama, as far as typical k-dramas go. It has heart to it. However, I wouldn't see it's insanely better than any of the other ones out there.

[SPOILERS]

Yoochun's acting is great; such an improvement. I don't have any complaints on how the other actors played their characters either. So moving on...

The characters themselves aren't too realistic, but hey it's a drama right? Who would expect it to be? Personally, I found that Bak Ha was a strong independent woman in the first half of the drama but she later turned out to be "weak" and dependent like all the other typical k-drama female leads. It was disappointing. Near the end, all we see is her bawling her eyes out.

The plot... gosh the plot was interesting at first but it has been done before by Hong Kong dramas and such. It's not fairly new. At the beginning, the comedic actions of the characters was definitely refreshing. However, in the second half of the drama, things were way too rushed and pieces did not fall into place. The connection between modern day and the Joseon era were poorly shown... and it was all rushed into the last episode. I think the directors and producers were trying to wrap it up as fast as possible because they squished too many cute scenes of Lee Gak and Bak Ha. Also, it doesn't seem like Tae Mu and Se Na were punished enough. Tae Mu just went to jail... that's it? And Se Na all of a sudden decides to be good? Way too rushed...

Finally, my personal complaint is this... and this happens to be a pretty big spoiler. But when Lee Gak went back to the Joseon Era, he SOMEHOW knew what Bu Yong had planned before she died. She gave up her life to save her sister and her family, despite their bad intentions. And Lee Gak decides to waste it!!! Bu Yong died for nothing...That's what it seems like to me.

A May 28 2012 7:48 pm Instantly became my favorite drama! I have yet to see another show mix comedy, romance, violence, & heart as well as this one did! Also, there was no slump in story or acting (which is a rarity - let's be honest). For 20 episodes I was completely hooked and invested in each & every character. I'm sad that it's already over :(

Lee gak and park ha better end up together, Also i think it was boo yong that died at the start of it not the crown princess since she boo young made the princes thing that has the flower and butterfly on it and when the girl died at the start, the butterfly left and landed on park ha's shoulder. I guess we'll only know next week. I don't know how they are going to tie everything up in 2 eps, It might be a little rushed >.< But anyway guess i have to have another week of painfully waiting, Bbasha! <3

His body language and expressions are so endearing. This drama will not be forgotten because of his talent. Also I cannot speak well enough of Han Ji Mins' talent. She is lovely and combines strength and vulnerability, seriousness and cuteness perfectly. Often actresses are either too cute or too serious. The dynamic between hers and MIckys' character is so much fun to watch. I have never been so delighted by a couple before. I hope they do more parts together.

Maybe he got more attention when just being 3 people in JYJ. Anyway, his voice are not as good as junsu and jaejoong but i think his acting is better than two of them, and even changmin and uknow's acting are not as good as yoochun. that's why yoochun get more drama to be a lead role....

The show itself looks interesting, a bridge between modern day dramas and period pieces. Truth be told, I think anything is going to be something of a letdown when compared with Padam Padam, but that's what happens when a show sets a new standard for awesome.
