A story of four people attempting to quench their desires and appease their heartbreaks.
Jo Eun-Gang (Seo Ji-Hye) wants to become a school teacher, but she has failed to pass her teaching examination. She now works as a private tutor. She appears calm, but she holds something hot within her heart. She is a person who will do anything to get what she wants.
Ji Nam-Cheol (Lee Sung-Jae) comes from a poor family, but he is married to a woman from a rich family. He runs a business that is actually owned by his father-in-law. Ji Nam-Cheol is powerless at the company.
Han Ba-Da (Hong Soo-Hyun) is a married woman. She works as a jewelry designer. Right before her wedding, her parents went bankrupt. She was about to give up on her wedding, but her fiance persuaded her to marry him. Her life is not easy due to her mother-in-law.
Go Cha-Won (Lee Sang-Woo) works as a dermatologist. He became a doctor as his parents expected and is married to Han Ba-Da. He doesn't like his job and he knows his wife is having a hard time due to his mother, but he doesn't know what to do. His brother-in-law is Ji Nam-Cheol.

The storyline and script were exceptionally well-written, leaving a deep impression that words can hardly express. The cast delivered such powerful performances, bringing the characters to life beautifully. Truly a masterpiece.

Was very beautiful and if they arent meet the transformation of Nam Chul to the point the chairma bow to him will not happen. They give me tears. I love everything about them. And overall drama is very good the script, acting cinematography all.
Park Min Mar 12 2024 5:06 pm The drama kept teasing us endlessly to what might have happened in Italy but it never revealed it. Sure, you can make some obvious assumptions but that's not as satisfying especially with the constant teasing. Makjang shows are designed to push your buttons through what's obvious from the observer perspective and this drama does exactly that but also eases the pain by making every character to have an unadjust trait or 10, including all of the leads. By doing this, it also makes it easier for the viewers to go softer on some of the wrong doings. You end up watching it to see how the car crash will end. In this case, a lot of fast and big changes happened in the last 40 minutes despite the drama having all the time in the world to approach its resolution more gracefully. Although it the drama was somewhat alright, but the harsh shift in the last 4 episodes made it really bad and unbearable. The main confrontation of the involved parties in the cafe was an example of that. The writer just wanted to amp it up as high as possible to squeeze the last dribbles of broadcast ratings. One thing I didn't like is how the drama forced every character to be connected to one another, it pushed the improbability of interconnected stories a bit too hard that it became ridiculous even for a makjang drama. If I had to pick one thing that irked me the most, it's how Da Ba's mother react differently between her daughter and Eun Gang on the suspicions of potential infidelity despite her daughter is the one doing it 10 folds harder in front of her face. A true bruh moment right there. Looking into the writer's previous projects, she's consistently decent except for a few outliers and this drama was part of these outliers.
Wolfie Dec 29 2023 4:19 am Kudos to the writer, Moon Young-Nam. If it's a painting it's a realist. No character is perfect. Anyone has flaws and make mistakes. Just like us everyday people.
I read in Wikipedia, the writer is a specialist in twisting a ciiche plot into something fresh. I think she succeeded again.
The actors all just deliver. I thought it would end in tragic. I'm glad the writer gives all character good but believable closure.
If you want to learn about real life from other people experiences, this is for you.
This drama theme makes me remember a letter from a father to his son in *Innocent Witness*. "Everyone makes mistakes. And life is harsh and mean to your mistakes. But you just have to keep going forward.... (I forget the rest, please watch it yourself :)
We all make serious mistake(s) in our lives. Losing your own "red ballon", but just keep going like Eun-kang and others in this drama. Who knows God has prepare a pleasant surprise down your road ahead...

lrt Sep 12 2023 9:38 pm Wow!! ... to think I almost gave this up because I had just watched a Netflix series called Bombay Begums and it was all about betrayal and affairs which I didn't feel like repeating. This story is way better and each episode tops the last. I can't believe I felt myself actually empathizing with the "sinners". Very REAL!! I hung in there because I enjoyed the director and writers' previous work... glad I did.

All the actors and actress of the show did a great job and I can't applaud the writer enough for the boldness to get out of the cliche box to let us see and realize that some people actually go through situations like this I feel that some of the comments are really missing the big picture here, this should have been a higher rated show
K-Drama Addict Apr 07 2023 4:50 pm Adultery Themed Majkang is back. Flawed characters. Intense yet Addicting. If you are expecting cutesy romance then this is not the drama for you. Overall, I have enjoyed this drama. The best part of Red Balloon is the exceptional portrayal of the actors especially Seo Ji Hye who made a 180 degree turn on her role, Hong Soo Hyun and Lee Sung Jae.

umyeong Feb 28 2023 1:55 am the final episode was really good, excellent closure. respect to han ba da. the actress playing han ba da has done a flawless job. i still can't wrap my head around the reason why seo ji hye played the role she played, but either way, it was good. i am not satisfied with ji chul and eun san's story. i did not like this drama either. i feel like i had wasted 20 hours of my time. at least the last episode was somewhat better than the rest of the 19 episodes. and oh god, i had to fast forward all the scenes with the jo family, good riddance. now i need to watch something else to wipe this drama off my mind ugh.

I hate the character of Eun kang and Eun san for being mistress and ruins a family. Their parents are money greedy and always blames because they are poor. You can still be a good person, respectable and dignified even you are poor. I did not finish the drama.

Towards her husband: who is inconsiderate toward his own family. In my Opinion if you’re Married and has your own Family, this family comes first. He´s justifying his Moms behavior like “you know how she is” or “she is traditional”. The Mom clearly breaks boundaries just because she is the mother in law. She disrespects Ba Da constantly, destroys her business (by behaving bad in her office), tells lies to his husband (“she had a lot of guys” etc.) and stir up her best friend (“she doesn’t consider you as a friend”). Also why does Ba Da needs permission to take care of her SICK mother? He never had the courage to stand up for his wife and put his Mom in her place, how is that a good husband? It freaks me out that if a man is working and the mom is doing everything (like cleaning, cooking and taking care of the children) he is still considered as a good husband and great dad. But when a Woman is independent and try to work on her business (switches the traditional Roles of male an female), she is considered a bad mom and wife? WTF???
Also to Eun Kang: In my opinion Ba da considers Eun Kang as a real best friend. She listens to her advice and tells her her problems. Eun Kang doesn’t do the same, but how is this Ba Da’s fault ??? They even said that when they went to trips they were always talking and laughing, she even takes her shopping and paid her college tuition. Eun Kang wasn’t comfortable to show her how she lives and introduce her to her parents because she was embarrassed. I even read in the comments that she lied and implied that her parents are dead, but I’m not sure about this. Eun Kang was jealous about Ba Das life and envied her. I’m not even sure if she really likes Ba Das husband or if she just want him because she envies and wants to be Ba Da so bad. Ba Da also does everything want Eun Kang wants (like meet her at the ocean) and comfort her (when Eun Kang literally cried because of BA DA’S HUSBAND). I Think Eun Kang is really the Villian and doesn’t deserve a happy ending. Maybe a Happy endling like visit a psychiatric Institution, cause she clearly has a personality disorder. She is manipulating (several lies towards Ba Das Husband to take him over like fake talking to BA Da on the phone telling lies, etc., playing Paresite in his family) She is hypocritical (I have trauma cause of the Cheating when I was a child, but does the same to Ba Das child and playing her Mommy, breaking a functional family in parts because she is jealous) And so much more. Heads up to the actress, cause I never was so aggressive when I just saw the face of someone. Her acting is pure Gold. Anyways to Eun Kang (The Character NOT THE ACTRESS!!) she is a bitch and fake as friend. She doesn’t deserve anything just a treatment for her mental illnesses.
And about the Kiss Ba Da had: she literally told him before he kissed her, “don’t look at me like this I’m a married woman” she was drunk and yes she kissed back, that is not okay and she should had told her husband about it. But after he saw her with her ex when she slapped him and turned her ex down, he saw that and decided to cheat on her. Like what? I see my wife literally turn another men down, so im gonna smash her best friend? Now I understand why she didn’t told him tbh. Also when she told Eun Kang about the Kiss, for me it was obviously a Joke to do something more when the mother wasn’t there. I always joke like this to my friends, it doesn’t mean I would cheat or do something.

Isaac Feb 13 2023 8:39 pm I feel there’s something hidden the writer wants us to understand, it’s not really about justifying cheating but to show how one’s actions can affect their entire life, only if Ba da knew better and cha won could man up, if eun kang could move on, Eun sang control her feelings and geum Ah pay more attention then they won’t all be in that predicament… life doesn’t really go as planned but no matter how it goes you should learn to embrace it and use it for the better… but I’ll still blame their parents a little… if I was eun kang and eun sang I’ll focus on working on myself more since everyone looks down on me and my family maybe leave the country to go make it big and come back to show them all.

WOW... I've seen this behavior in so many dramas (My wife is having an affair this week, Valid love, Secret Love Affair, Love Affairs in the Afternoon..etc)
wede Feb 13 2023 1:53 am despite all the messed up relationships happening, i really love the hidden(?) moral behind this drama. it's how the sins of the parents (Eun Kang-Eun San's cheating dad/ jealous mom, Cha Won's overcontrolling dad and selfish mom, Ba Da's snobbish mom) resulted in how messed up the children are (the sisters' trauma and inferiority complex, Geum Ah-Nam Chul's unhappy marriage, Ba Da oblivious in "enslaving" Eun Kang), and causing suffering to the grandchildren. the parents are probably satires of Korea's older generation, and hopefully the message gets delivered to them

SJH and LSJ are definitely the stars of the show, with those around them putting in a great job as well. and can't applaud the writer enough. it could've been a drama full of dislikeable people who cheats and lies, but she added another layer by explaining how their actions and attitudes stem from things that happened in their pasts - people dont do bad things just because, but due to traumas and misfortunes they suffered

Yellow Jan 22 2023 11:25 pm This drama is not everyone's cup of tea. It's intense, dramatic, and full of twists and turns. However, I personally think that it deserves its recognition. This drama is awesome. On the surface level, it seems like the regular makjang drama that is full with infidelity and villainous characters. But, when you truly watch it, you understand the characters. This drama is character-driven, rather than plot-driven. And this is what makes it so special. Even though Eun Kang is the main character, there is appropriate amount of focus on the other characters' stories. Their flaws, their problems, their haunting pasts. I sympathize with all of them. They're conflicting and they are constantly in the moral grey zone. No one is truly kind or bad. No one is truly black or white. And this drama portrays humans to the core. We are all grey-ish. We constantly battle our good and bad side. People who are constantly being looked down upon will grow into envious and overly ambitious person like Eun Kang. People who are constantly being suppressed will start to rebel like Nam Chul. At the beginning, Ba Da seems like the sweet, innocent friend who is just perfect and so kind-hearted. But slowly as the drama goes on, her layers are peeled and she's not what she seems to be. She truly thinks she's better than Eun Kang and stands on a higher ground than her. So she's not a saint either.

I do not like her role, she is mischievous and some what delusional for she envied Ba da. I hope in the end, she will wake and face and take care of her own life. Betrayal and infidelity in life are always proof of envy and greed. Eun kang and Eung san cannot justify their family situation in the end its their problem and karma is near.

dwe Jan 12 2023 2:28 am I can understand all the commenters wth-ing over how non of the characters are likeable - but then they are all only human, with very human flaws caused by their surroundings - the Go family due to the overbearing father and the selfish mother, the Jo family due to their poverty and the philandering father. i find it very interesting how they writer made Eun Kang and Eun San so nonchalantly try to seduce other people's husband after seeing their mother being cheated upon their whole life. you can see that despite their despicable actions, each character became what they are due to their upbringings and the associated traumas

April Jan 02 2023 4:08 pm Seo Ji Hye and Lee Seung Jae are the leads of this drama, but they are not partnered up. Something new to the viewers. They have their own stories, that's the reason why some felt like Seungjae has a lot of screentime, cause in fact, he is the lead here.
Anyway, the supporting senior actors were all came from daily and weekend drama, that's why there is a familiar feeling on its whole arrive. Makjang, yet I don't wanna call it one.

During ep 1 as I saw her I knew it when she threw her umbrella just to be friends with her and stuff friends like that are snakes I’m not being close to anyone NEVERRRR

This drama is definitely intruiging but it's also so damn frustrating. I don't like anyone here, specially Kwon Tae Gi. The vibe is soap opera-ish. I want to pull everyone's hair hahaha. I hope there's revenge arc because revenge is the best part in adultery drama
wede Dec 24 2022 9:31 pm this drama is confusing me. it as a lot of potential adultery undertones, making it feel like TWOTM - but on the other hand it has a lot of light family comedy undertones. and the one who potentially will be cheating (eun kang and nam chul) is being portrayed as long suffering underdogs who deserves to get some revenge on a world that has been stepping on them.

She harbors feeling for her friend’s husband. Her friend is no better. She used Eun Gang’s poor economic status and low self-esteem to make her friend her assistant. This drama is frustrating, and I think I will stop watching it.
