Plot

Chae-gyeong is an ordinary art high school student. One day, she hears totally unexpected news that, based on her grandfathers will, she must marry the unemotional Crown Prince Lee Shin who attends the same high school. Free-spirited Chae-gyeong resists the proposal, but reluctantly marries him to help her debt-ridden family. As she struggles to adapt herself to the proper manners and royal duties of palace life and to her disagreeable husband, Lee Shins sentimental cousin and second-in-line to the throne Yul steps into her life. She feels like she can rely on Yul to help her, but cant help worrying about her haughty, cold-hearted husband. To help bridge this gap, the senior members of the royal family take some special measures to get them to spend the night together. Along the way, you will encounter numerous delightful episodes among the cute and lively Chae-gyeong, the cold heartthrob Lee Shin, the handsome, down-to-earth Yul, the perfect ballerina Hyo- rin who just cant get over Lee Shin, and all the other members of the royal family. Park Min May 16 2024 8:51 pm It was a really hard sell when a core part of the plot was the male lead treating the female lead like a piece of shit, combined with the "oh no he doesn't know how to express his feelings", these tropes are better left in fanfiction. The case was even worse due to the absolute lack of any chemistry between any of the four leads, this was the definition of negative rizz. It got even worse, all of the three leading cast Ju Ji Hoon & Song Ji Hyo & Kim Jeong Hoon brought an utterly abysmal joke of a performance, admittedly, this was their first main role and was totally incomparable with their current performance, all of them went to do much better and bigger things, it's better to forget they worked on this drama. On the other hand, Yoon Eun Hye was pulling the entire thing together, solo carrying whatever left to be salvaged. Her dynamic with her friends and family was quite good, but not with any of the leads. The puppets at the end of each episode were a nice touch, it would have been nicer if they incorporated that in the drama itself. The earlier parts of the drama were generally better, the events in the palace were a bit boring. To build up for the climax, the last 4 episodes created the last point of tension however it was seriously atrocious writing, one of the worst conflicts I've seen a writer come up with. It was just pure bad writing from that point until the last frame of the drama. If they slapped in some random terminal illness nuances it would've been a better serviceable finale. If anything, I'm only remembering this drama for its awful last few episodes.

VB Jul 10 2022 3:51 am I'm watching it again...I've lost count how many times I've watched it. I did not like Yul when he would lie about how Shin is and how he was supposed to care more for Hyorin than her. That would infuriate me. Her naiveté is part of Chae Kyung's charm...I've watched this drama enough to understand everyone's personality and why they are that way. Her role went from being a fun-loving teen that enjoyed her friends, school and family to a mature young lady that wanted to follow her heart no matter the cost...she came from a family riddled in debt but she kept her humour and her family and friends kept her grounded. As she became friends with, that often maddening, Yul, she stayed loyal as a friend and gradually fell in love with her clueless, arrogant and unemotional husband. Min Hyorin was annoying at first. She had it all and was proposed to first, said no...so why latch on? Seriously! Her constantly trying to get him back ..move on already ?. I understand her sadness, too. The beautiful thing about this drama is that these two did not like each other in the beginning...their gradual change in the marriage happens with every episode. CK staying true to herself, friends only with Yul, loves her husband...they just didn't communicate enough...understandable for teens I love her family and Shin's grandma and sister were lovely. Officer Kong was an amazing servant and good to both of them and so were her ladies in waiting. Ck had so many challenges to overcome compared to her husband...from an ex-girlfriend who wouldn't quit, her husband's friends who didn't like her, a prickly mother in-law, pushy cousin in-law, Yul, palace life, missing her family, tabloids and school...even her own friends gave Ck the cold shoulder at the beginning when her marriage was announced. I love how Shin grew as a person and CK helped him...in the end he had no choice but to learn how to express his feelings. He had to, to keep her. She had no problem communicating her feelings...sadness, anger, frustration...he was not accustomed to this...it puzzled him to see his wife react to her new life and to him. He never met anyone like her. Her friends were delightful, caring and hilarious. She really needed them. I don't get sick of watching them. They had great chemistry! Fabulous cast and story.

1) make the female lead less gullible, trusting and naive. The female lead here easily got manipulated coz she’s naive and slow 2) make the second male lead less creepy and annoying. I easily fall for second male leads but I hate the SML here. He was repulsive, manipulative and creepy. I hated him so much that I skipped most of his scenes 3) make sure there’s better communication between the main leads. I hated how they wasted so much time due to misunderstandings. Miscommunication was the biggest flaw in this drama.

Some scenes could be resolved much more nicely without dragging if Shin and Chaekyung communicated properly and confessed their true feelings. I just want to see Shin and Chae Kyung together happily huhuh.

saa Jun 14 2021 1:54 am this drama was honestly quite cliche with the rich cold rude boy and the bubbly happy fun girl but there's something that makes you just want to keep going. the romance scenes are absolutely the sweetest, the details, the styling, the set were all so well thought out. i adore min hyorin so much in this drama, she is absolutely stunning. all leads had their own bad traits at first, shin was a selfish jerk, hyorin was annoying, chaegyung was immature and yul was manipulative but i'm glad that they all got their character development throughout the drama. i would defiitely watch this again, soo excited for the remake although i did hope they had a season 2 instead.

May 13 2020 11:20 am I loved this drama though in my opinion the couple could’ve had more screentime together and should’ve shown more scenes about the two of them fixing their relationship but it was a mix of story of Yul and his mom and the King and other characters. But overall i loved this drama and it is a must watch. Though i think the ending could have been more, to give the viewers more happiness.

This is a must watch! You will love the lead characters.

And the plot is not boring its very interesting. It does not talks about love, friendship and family but it also let us see the political view. I finished watching this and Yul ending part made me cry :( Yul deserve so much more I think his personal and family life was the saddest.

I think that the writer is masochist....To write a story to make as wiewers suffer from the begin to the end of this 24 episodes. the story had some positive points but that annoying mother and son made me sick . ayesha and santun Oct 09 2018 2:29 am I think this drama was overrated. The acting of the four lead actors were a bit weird, especially the two female lead. Characterization is weak and inconsistent. The problem in few last episodes was exaggerated and illogical, they just could solve it easily rather than dragging into 24 episode! The ending is so so, the fact that lee yul took responsibility of his mom's fault toward the ending and no further clarification about it was unfair. Writing and music background was not so good,especially in few first episode.

The storyline is very well-written and the flow is great!! Especially love the sweet ending! I am sure you know many fans (such as myself) hope that the MBC producers can consider doing a Season 2 with the same cast....or at least keep both Lee Shin and Chae Kyung in the same sequel. It will be such a hit worldwide!! Please please!! *puppy eyes with praying hands*

Amandeep Jun 02 2018 11:06 pm I am aware it aired more than ten years ago, but it was really enjoyable and a big hit. While the storyline was good, I dislike monarchy stuff repeated. The last few episodes felt rushed past. I noticed it did drag on during the middle a bit. The ending was okay. The reason of watching Goong is Yoon Eun-hye. She is my favorite actress and she is the reason I started watching South Korean TV shows a few years ago. I am very glad to hear about her comeback to Korea. I really hope she will have tv show this year or next year.

Right know 10 years has been running and I remain favorites PRINCESS HOURS, the drama was never ever boring eventhough watching so many times. However there is quite fatal drawback in my opinion that Lee Yoon-ji as Lee Hye-myung should better be replaced another actress. as the crown prince's sister she was not friendly at all to the sister in-law, she is also appear arrogant and her is also very unnatural.

Ji Hyo unnie fighting. I only watched this drama because Ji Hyo was in it!!

christina May 05 2015 1:25 am I am surprised that I am not the only person who's watching a 9 year old drama :) A very interesting fiction indeed because its like I am watching a little of Mischievous Kiss and Boys Over Flower all in one drama. Its even more amazing to know that its the first drama for the 4 lead casts. Eun-Hye & Ji-Hoon, now all matured, should come together in a new drama. Just cannot wait. Personally, I believe the entire story can be completed in 20 episodes at most and more romantic scenes can be added to drum up viewership. I wondered what is the writer's intention in this story? That imperialism should not be in existence in the 21st century? Finally, II am very disappointed by the ending. Its as if the writer just quickly wrap up the whole thing...that is the reason viewers are asking for part 2 I guess. :D

alifah Apr 07 2014 8:23 am it's been 8 years but so many people, including me, still love it! i always get those goosebumps whenever i hear the ost, and i always feel hyped whenever someone says 'goong' or 'peincess hours'. i love the light humour in the drama, and even if you've watched this for times, you won't ever get bored of this. except for the long talk from the king and queen, but it will be payed of by chae-kyung's funny acts and shin lee-chae kyung's sweet moments. i will definitely watch it again. but still waiting for the next part and the goong reunion even if it seems veeerrryyyyyy impossible</3 GOONG FOREVER!^^

Goong was my first korean crush. The ost's are so perfect, they are still my best tracklist til now, when other kdramas ost are just passed by in my tracklist then i deleted them lol. Every little part of this drama is the best among korean dramas i ever watched. Words can't desribes my feeling for goong. Thank you goong crew for made such a memorable event in my life.

I'm a fun of different korean dramas but goong is one of a kind actually it places first in my list. I am hoping that there will be season two for it as planned, and I hope that it will be out soon. Also I am hoping that the same characters will be playing. Please put a period for our craving... what will.actually happen after shin gave up the throne and if chaegung is really pregnant, we are looking forward to it. Kim Jeong Hoon as YUL is the best second lead character ever.. No one yet surpass the strong character he has. A real LOVE TRIANGLE was in this drama.. Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon are just adorable couple.. but I ship for Jeong Hoon and Eun Hye.

Its almost the same rich boy poor girl concept, fitting into the crowd and the both falling in love through so many obstacles. It was lovely and worth a watch though the ending 4 episodes kinda made everything seem little gloomy. Still cheers ! :) :)

The ppl who got my attention in this drama are Prince Yul and Hyorin (villains of drama) cuz they'r so attractive and beautiful that i couldn't take my eyes away from them, especially Prince Yul is so cutie and sweetie^.^ It's a pity he didn't end up with Princess Chaegyeong. On the other hand, it's good cuz Prince Yul deserves better and more beautiful girl than Chaegyeong...
