Hae-Joo's father, an oil scholar, is betrayed and killed by Do-Hyun (Lee Deok-Hwa). Do-Hyun, who loves Hae-Joo's mother Geum-Hee (Yang Mi-Kyung), then orders Gi-Chool (Kim Kyu-Cheol) to kill 2-year-old Hae-Joo, but Gi-Chool can't go through with it.
Gi-Chool takes 2-year-old Hae-Joo and tells others that he is taking her to the beach. He makes it appear Hae-Joo drowns by the beach, but in actuality, takes Hae-Joo to live with his old military acquaintance Hong-Chul (Ahn Nae-Sang). Unaware of all this, Hae-Joo's mother marries Do-Hyun, who has two children from a previous marriage.
11 years later, Hae-Joo (later played by Han Ji-Hye) and her family arrive in the city of Ulsan, running away from debtors. Hae-Joo takes care of the family, instead of her incompetent father and mother who hates Hae-Joo. She is transferred to the same elementary school where Do-Hyun's daughter In-Hwa (later played by Son Eun-Seo) attends. On Hae-Joo's first day at her new school, she has a physical struggle with In-Hwa. Due to their fight, In-Hwa's mother Geum-Hee is called in to the school and she sees Hae-Joo (her daughter that she thought drowned).

Jill Nov 22 2022 6:29 am This is a strong, inspiring drama, one of my favorites. Everyone acts beautifully. The OST is gorgeous. Cinematography is like a first run cinema movie. Don't listen to naysayers: they are blind. May Queen is addictive and fun. I loved that the REAL love story was between a non-biological daughter and her adoptive father. Platonic of course but unforgettable. A woman can't go wrong in life with such a loving, sacrificial daddy.
Park Min Oct 20 2022 9:11 pm Oh god it's a love Sqaure! The worst kind of love squares too. This is the worst performance I've seen from Jae Hee, he's usually better than this. Weak opening! The initial setup isn't encouraging to keep watching at all. You know when a drama gets too comfortable when they throw an excess of 8 episodes just for this redundant childhood flashbacks that aren't worth more than 2 eps max. The romance was completely ass; no chemistry between anyone involved, emotions are flipped to suit the narrative, it felt cheap, awkward and was treated as an after thought. The drama lacked a good build up for the bad parties and their motivation. Any sequence of events regarding a revenge plot was generic and fell flat. Barely serviceable makjang.
The whole thing about all the 4 leads switching partners was straight up distasteful.

My sister recommend this drama because she told there's a drama about female engineer. Finally. But, hell no. The science only a makeup on this drama. No wonder science engineering doesnt really match with women in Korea. Meh.
utami Apr 15 2017 11:03 am I loved this drama so much. The casts played their roles so well. I've never thought that I would find this drama since I'm quite a new fan of kdrama (1 year and 4 months) compared to my other friends who have been hooked to it since more than a decade. I was bored these days as there is not so many to watch (honestly, am very picky).
Am so glad that I found this drama after I watched Jae Hees' movie, 3 Iron. And I just loved his acting.
So this drama is highly recommended.

When it ended I was really sad and until now I have never forgotten about it. I still watch it in Youtube. I hope it will have part 2! :)

jan Aug 11 2013 12:31 am 38 episodes of may queen is quite too long.. there were a lot of unnecessary scenes.. 24 episodes could have made it more interesting.. in all fairness tho, the story is very nice.. kim jae won has given justice to his role.. splendid acting.. truly commendable.. i am a bit disappointed with ji hye and jae hee.. their acting in this series is s bit off, lack depth.. acting should come out natural in tv dramas and movies.. what i saw in ji hye's acting is like acting in stage.. the young hae joo is a lot better..

Then when Hey-Joo and Chang Hea seperated It was like : nonesense...!!!!!! I already watched works of Jae Hee and to be honest this work dsnt tottally fit his skills...!! well I dnt really like this drama but I continued watching it although..!!

Tkk Apr 22 2013 7:39 am I have to say that the kids parts were too long. By the time I finished those first 8 episodes, i already lost interest to move to the adults parts so I quit after that. I started this drama because of Jae Hee even though I am not too fond with han ji hye. I think Jae Hee is good in any character: nice, serious, funny, mean...but I love to see him in nice and funny roles better. I miss him since 3 fathers 1 mother drama.

KS and HJ scenes are funny that i only see them as friends. but with CH and HJ yes they suffered a lot but i can feel they deeply love each other, i dont know, maybe because the build-up from the beginning thats why i like them to end up together.. im not satisfied with hae joos acting, she cries a lot but the same attack on every sad scene.. CH and KS are excellent they deserve those award. {)
i cry a lot on the scene when CH told HJ why he become that evil, that is so short scene but i can feel CH sadness, and when he cmes back he saw KS and HJ kissing.. it breaks my heart.
skrwitch Jan 22 2013 4:40 am I watched 8 episodes before being bored to death. It took too long to get to the adult stage and it still didn't go back into the present at episode 8. It may be good, but it's too slow.

Also, the ending was okay, because Jang Dohyeon understood what he had done was all bad and wrong because of Hae Joo is his daughter...... Hae Joo's two father and uncle Jeong Woo was all great for loving her so much I will miss Kang San, Hae Joo, Inhwa, Jeong Woo, Chang Hee, Bong Hee, and all characters.... If you notice the pictures provided by Asianwiki which is just above the rating table, especially number 44 and 45, they were not shown in the real drama. You can also look at their behind the scenes video. Maybe they edited, but why did they edit so much? Those pictures and scenes look interesting.

It should read "Revealing EVERYTHING to the main characters at the very end is ok but revealing EVERYTHING to the VIEWERS at the very last is NOT ok (just my humble opinion)." I want to say that the writer could still reveal the last piece of the puzzle at the very end for maximum impact but the viewers should be given some clues earlier so they won't feel cheated.
Letisha Dec 26 2012 1:21 pm The core story is good but the lead character perfecting the azimuth thruster which is a complicated engineering machine (RD department with engineers has failed) is hard to believe considering that she did not even go to college. The bad guy turning to be the biological father of HJ actually made the story more complex and dramatic but revealing it to the viewers during the last 2 episodes makes a cheap ending. Revealing the secret to the main characters at the very end is ok but revealing it to the VIEWERS at the very last is not ok (just my humble opinion). It would have been more dramatic if CLUES were dropped here and there EARLIER, the story will be more interesting, and viewers will be more engaged, they will not cry foul or feel cheated. With the exception of Geum Bo Ra and Lee Deok Hwa, the adult actors are not impressive as the young actors. Overall, the story is quite good (minus the boring parts). Great job.
Ghana Dec 26 2012 1:05 am This drama started out great from the beginning especially with the children actors and actresses. However, when it got to the middle part it seemed a bit dragged out but picked up the pace........however, I do not agree with how it ended especially pertaining to Chang Hee who was actually the best character in this drama. I believe he deserved much better after giving up everything he loved.

Anna Moshita Dec 21 2012 9:22 am i'm now in ep 26..huhh..why i think the story is getting weaken..hope it'll not dissappoint me at the end..i don't feel that feeling when i first start watching this drama..like the time when kang san,hae joo,chang hee still a child though..hae joo is stronger,kang san and chang hee's character is better..i hope kang san and hae joo are end up together..oh pliss writer, make a better plot than what showed now..somehow, i feel frustrated for the real haejoo's omma, she is sooooo pathetic, treat nicely and stand up for her current husband who is a murderer of her previous husband which have so many wrongdoing..andd adding to that, she treat her husband's daughter,son like her own and more patethic to that she don't know anything, her real daughter is right under her nose..ohh, she's soo naive :(

Hanako Dec 15 2012 7:37 pm I am not sure whether the ending is what I predict and in fact I would prefer Jae Hee with Han Ji Hye but that does not seem the case as I am approaching ep 28 where he is going to marry Son Eun Seo by revenge and when I look at it, he was the main character for this drama, and am not sure how it goes. It is ridiculous for love to develop all of a sudden and 15 years relationship down to the drain just because of Jae Hee's father who committed so many crimes and never felt sorry for what he did and his son had to sacrifice himself not for himself but for the father and perhaps for his ex girlfriend..it is sad no doubt , but thinking the ending he might end with Han Ji Hye like Ji Hye's mother back to her first love the murderer Lee Dweok Hwa . Overall the drama is good, thrilling but maybe a bit disappointing towards the end. Salute to all the main actors and actresses who really done a good job for this drama
shawn Dec 10 2012 4:17 pm So I just finished episode 32 and it seems this series ended with that episode, but it feels unfinished the way they ended it. There surely has to be more episodes to wrap things up, practically nothing was resolved except Chang Hee's fathers confession to Hae Joo.
I've seen several Kdrama, but this one is by far the weirdest ending I've ever seen.

In that way, we get plots that involve women who don't graduate middle school, yet can create a super-sophisticated, complicated engineering device, an azimuth thruster, that entire global corporations filled with masters of engineering graduates cannot create, or for that matter, independent engineering developers with the same requisite engineering skill level. So please, let us dispense with the nitpicking and enjoy the wonderful drama in context. Thankees!!

Episode 32 didn't end like a proper ending. I'm sure there's more. Like if you see in behind the scenes video, there were different scenes you know. And when the drama ended, they did not show their appreciation, they did not show their whole cast photo. It seems really weird. But I just hope there's more. Thank you.

Davia Nov 23 2012 2:56 am This drama is showing how these four kids grow up and how the three of them, under adverse conditions, try to succeed in their careers. The love stories are important too but the main theme is the prior. I am enjoying this longer series and do not find it repetitive at all but quite exciting to see how this is playing out.
I agree that Hae Joo's character is annoying in her lack of ability to feel a true depth of emotion but after thinking about it I realized that in the context of her upbringing and having to stuff her emotions all her life in order to endure her childhood that it actually makes sense why she is this way.
I do agree that she and Kang San don't have much chemistry yet but neither did she and Park Chang-Hee either. Maybe that will develop. Park Chang Hee has gone too far I think now for him to be with Hae Jee anymore. Also I think their love was more a childhood friendship that came out of the loneliness and hardship of their childhood. If it was real they would have stuck together. I hope that Hae Joo and Kang San will develop a real love.
I am really impressed with Jae Hee's portrayal of the complex character of Park Chang-Hee. I hope that he gets recognition for this and an award for his amazing acting here.

gara Nov 05 2012 2:49 am as we suspend disbelief and play along in the story of the characters, we somehow trade "trust", and there had been a tug of war between the writer and [the viewer] telling the truth and concealing it -- [accepting it or feeling cheated] nothing wrong with it except: (1) was it concealed for purposes of prolonging the series? (2) to tie the loose ends better? There comes a time, when narration becomes tiring because the viewer feels like fooled, the tricks played when you already know the truth and then take it back. Like a child, when promised of a better episode then, taking the candy back-- because, ugh, not yet time to make the mother and child see each other. Best option, not to dare or play tricks like that-- it somehow, makes the viewer feel cheated. Hope this extends well and ends well.

LOL. Maybe they had good chemistry so the casting director just choose them to play along again.
Davia Oct 21 2012 11:52 am I also want to congratulate Han Ji Hye for doing the best character transition that I have seen. Her mannerism are almost identical to her younger counter part Kim You Jung. Both are absolutely wonderful as the older and younger Hae Joo.
I see that this drama has been in the 2nd and 3rd position recently. It really is continuing to get even more interesting to watch and the acting is just so great. So many great actors in this.
Lee Deok Hwa plays the evil president but so well that I find him fascinating rather than repulsive to watch. Geum Bo Ra as Hae Joo's stepmother is also amazing. Kim Kyu Cheol as Park Chang Hee's father is brilliant.
Great transition by Jae Hee into the devilish and shockingly more sexy Chang Hee. Kim Jae Won's casual style for Kang San is refreshing and hilarious in contrast to the other characters. Well done all around.

I hate crying a lot over a drama that's why I don't like watching melos. It kills me. But because of KJW, i'm going to watch this till the end. I like him ever since I watched My Love Patzzi.

Please tell me they will coz I hate to see that Kang San being rejected. -:) besides that, when Hae Joo with Chang Hee, all she got was sadness, but with Kang San, she only had happy time coz Kang San always smile (love Kim jae won's smile, so cute) and like to joke. Anyway, thanks for choosing Kim Jae Won to be in this drama. have been waiting very long for his drama since Can you hear my heart. If there isnt Kim Jae Won in this drama, probably I will not watch it. I am a huge fan of Kim Jae Won. love u, KJW....

i dont know why but i just think that chang hee will not end up with hae joo but hae joo will end up with kangsan and changhee will be with inhwa or rather he will marry inhwa because of money ? that's what i think. but hope its not :( because i'm supporting changheexhaejoo couple. i want the young hae joo to be with young changhee or park gun tae such a great couple i'm getting inlove with this drama THE BEST!

I am already swoon with Kang San's character especially when he had his first kiss with Hae Joo, my that's so cute!!! my heart goes out with him as well when he found out Hae Joo and Chang Hee were dating. Excellent! so far so good! I only hope that the writer will continue to have a good justifications in developing the characters she put in the beginning.

I've fallen in love with haejoo and changhee. they're like a married couple ^^ the romantic first love scenes when they were young were just too perfect. also the way old chang hee treats haejoo is just too good, especially the kiss on her cheek. 15years, first love and such a bond, it will be very difficult for the writers to tear them apart so that haejoo could end up with kang san. I guess the writers is gonna messed up changhee's character and turn him to a devil one or make him betray haejoo by marrying another woman, which I find pity, coz of the strong innocent impression he gaves us when he was younger also cos of his sincere love to haejoo since he was young till grown-up. I wished the writers change their mind and make up a complicated love story between them with a happy ending that love beats everything, even the grudge/revenge/bad fate among them *dream away* anyway, whatever the ending, gonna support this drama always. have a nice evening everyone :)
