Plot

Born as an illegitimate son of a nobleman, Heo Jun meets a renowned physician named Eui-tae Yu, who changes his life by teaching him medicine. Heo Jun then struggles against social barriers with his selfless devotion to heal the sick.

Park Min Nov 18 2023 7:17 pm The drama had a weak and uninteresting start but it managed to pick itself back up after some time. Some patients' stories didn't blend well with what was going on and it passed off as an interruption. It shares a lot of similarities with Jewel in the Palace (2003) but with a less attractive cast. Not only that but it also shares the same problems Jewel in the Palace (2003) had had. You may refer to my comment there. In comparison, I would nudge this one slightly higher since it had a more raw feeling to it. The drama also had a modern remake back in 2013. There was no specific fundamental issues with the base story to prompt a remake. There were too many identical copy-pasted scenes and jokes, they don't take any creative freedom with the core story/scenes to make the remake worthwhile. Although the remake is longer but this came at the expense of its pace since the extended content was poorly utilized and made it a worse experience overall. A lot of over exaggeration/dramatization and a lot less human. I hoped the remake would have a better written ending but no, it was identical frame by frame to the original. I prefer this version over the remake for its roughness, rawness and concise cut, it makes for a better watch.

And I feel the new one got a better sad music, really really sad until after finished watch the drama my mind still overthink the story and how sad heo jun's story (yeah it's fictional of course)

Alaa Jun 09 2022 4:23 pm Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful, in every sense of the word. This is the best and most beautiful series I have seen in my entire life. I learned many lessons, It taught wisdom, patience and perseverance to achieve all your goals. I highly recommend watching it because it is truly one of the best Korean series ever.

GG Oct 17 2021 6:58 pm First, I have to say RIP to the awesome and much loved Kim Ju-Hyeok, who passed away on October 30, 2017. He is already sorely missed and I am diligently rewatching as many dramas and movies that he was in as possible. Second, I posted this on Lee Kye-In’s page and Heo Jun (1999). Just rewatched Huh Joon [1999] and Gu Am Heo Jun [2013] and couldn’t believe Lee Gye-in played part of Dul Swe(Shoi) in BOTH. Why is he not credited for the 1999 drama? He was truly annoying in 2013 version (but still love him and he was awesome in both dramas). So many lesser figures were noted. How does this happen? BTW. It was my second time for 1999 but 3rd for 2013 so I missed this last time. There were others who also were in both but different parts but all in all BOTH dramas were absolutely amazing. They were almost identical in every aspect, including dialogue, so it was fun to watch each simultaneously to match the acting and situations. Kudos to all involved in making two superb dramas. Thank you cast and crew.
