Plot

Japanese-American track star Mizuki Ashiya (Maki Horikita) transfers from a school in California to Japan, but not to just any old school. The school is Osaka High School - an all male high school! Mizuki Ashiya must disguise herself as a boy, all to get closer to her hero Izumi Sano (Shun Oguri), a high jump athlete who attends Osaka High.

Now with short hair, flattened chest and deeper voice, Mizuki becomes roommates with Izumi Sano, but trouble soon starts to brew. Izumi Sano discovers by accident that Mizuki is a girl and falls in love with her, but Mizuki is unaware of the fact. Complicating things, fellow classmate Shuichi Nakatsu (Toma Ikuta) starts to develop feelings for Mizuki, unaware that she is a girl!

I remember having the time of my life trying to watch this in the early 2000s with subtitles! ????? Also of course this started my obsession with the whole entire cast especially our main 3!! ?? Sorry the new generation of Japanese actors just don’t hit the same! ?

Every character is important and contributes to the drama. I love everyone but nothing beats Nakatsu. Rewatching this brings back a lot of memories. I love it! 11/10.

DZ Aug 26 2018 12:34 am I like this dorama very much. It was the first JDorama that I watched before my brother and still remembered it quite fondly. I like the wackiness of the cast and there are serious moments as well. I watched Hana Kimi 2007 and then read the manga. I have to be serious but I was very disturbed by Hana Kimi's manga version. Yes, there were funny moments but Mizuki's reason for going to the school was really poor which is no more than an obsessed stalker who wanted to just see her idol Sano Jump but have no idea about Sano's injury until she came to the school. Sano was okay with her stalking him. While yes, it is a manga. It is still disturbing regardless. But I like this version of Hana Kimi where she was the reason that he was injured. We can see that her motive was quite pure and she felt guilty about it, so the rest of the cast understand the reason. Overall, the cast is well cast and the direction of the show is strong as well. What I am glad about is that sometimes it is best not to draw inspiration from the original material as it can not only be disturbing but also would be bad storytelling.

Olivia Nov 07 2017 1:09 am ONE OF THE BEST JDORAMAS IN THE JDORAMA WORLD. You can't say you're a dorama otaku if you haven't watched this. And even if you're not an otaku, you should watch it. Sooooooo funny! Great cast! I love Shun, but I'm sorry to say that I love Toma more in this one - as Nakatsu. I think he is the one who brought what the fun and excitement througout. No dull episode.

Noir Sep 20 2017 7:20 am This is one of my fave shoujo manga of all time! I read it even before any adaptation. 13 years ago, I was wishing of anime adaptation!

Sadly, one of my fave manga character, Umeda Hokuto, was not portrayed as he should be. The gayness was cut down! Argh! How I wish Saitou Takumi (my gash! Oshitari Yuushi!) who portrayed Umeda in 2011 version was cast here instead! *not likely because they are still doing the tenimyu at that time*

But still, among the 4 versions, I prefer this the most. I may be biased to the Chinese and Korean versions because I favor J-dorama over any type of dramas. But the antics of Ikuta as Nakatsu and Hiro as Nanba added to the reason. (Though I also like Kiriyama Renn's Nanba.)

FactsFirst Aug 20 2017 10:08 pm Okay, people keep saying that the first Japanese version is better than all the others because it was the original version but in reality the Taiwanese version aired first. So really the Taiwanese version was the original drama but really all of the drama technically stemmed from the manga anyway. So I don't know why people can't state with their own opinion, with accurate facts that are easily googled in 30 seconds, without invalidating other people's opinions. like, you could just say instead that the Taiwanese version will always be your personal favorite because you watched it before you watched the others so it will forever hold a special place in your heart. You could also say the same for the others. Or you could say that you preferred the way they did a particular scene in one version compared to another but you think that a certain actor fit better for a certain role in a different version. Or you like that one version had something that another didn't or you were disappointed that one version was missing a certain character or scene that you think added a certain amount of depth or an extra story line or much needed comedic relief in the perfect moments. You could say that you liked one version more because you thought it was funnier or because it was more serious and you like serious dramas. Or you could say that you liked a version better than another because one had a better balance of comedy and seriousness than the other. You could even say that you like a version the best because it was the truest to the manga, if that is something that you look for. Now after all of this, how hard can it be to voice your own preference without undermining the opinion of others?

Can I girl ask for anything more? This drama is about a girl who dresses up as a boy to go to the exclusively for hot boys school that her idol, Sano, a high jumper attends. Sano had given up on high jumping, and Mizuki had made it her mission to see him jump again. Lots of comedy, really great drama!!! Gambathae nee!! Season 2 o kudasai!! ( I learned my Japanese from anime drama, so correct me if I'm wrong)

None of the stuff they do could happen in real life, but that's okay, because you're content to just sit back and let the craziness unfold. However, it is also a drama that really touches your heart and makes you fall in love with all the characters. The first drama I've ever watched, and I love it so much I'm willing to watch all the other versions, even the remake. However, none will compare to this one ^^

For those who isn't favor of illogical-totally-random-not-making-any-sense drama, this might not be your cup of tea. But if you just try give this drama a chance, you might find it entertaining. Although this was filmed back in 2007 but it is still one of my most favorite Japanese drama. Totally recommended. And Ikuta Toma as Nakatsu is amazing. he's hilarious ! My fave character in here. In my opinion, this is the best drama version for the manga ever.

Even i agree that the drama plays so much anime alike which is make the drama lack of serious moment. but, ow come on baby,, despite all of it, hana kimi is a must jdrama to watch bcos it is totally hillarious and very unforgetable to watch. I guess there will be no remake that can beat the original one. I'm a fan of nanba minami senpai character,,he's funny and poor playboy. Hana kimi .... BABY ... !!! Full of laughs ...

NinjaBride Apr 21 2012 3:04 pm This is one of the best J-Dramas ever, no joke. The cast was amazing and full of craziness. I was very disappointed in the main couple. The girl was constantly chasing after Sano and didn't pay attention to anything else. I understand why she was grateful to him but she was too focused on him and the romance wasn't well-developed at all. She clearly looked like a girl and she didn't portray her character well in comparison to the rest of the cast who nailed it. I'm not a fan of Maki's acting but I think do think she's beautiful and would be a great model imo. I was also disappointed in Sano if you check him out in Gokusen he's freaking awesome but I hated his character in Hana Kimi. Nakatsu was incredible I think Hana Kimi is a worth watching just to see the guys especially the dorm leaders lol. Tennoji's relationship with his girlfriend was very annoying but he himself was hilarious. If you're willing to ignore the bad details I totally recommend this drama.

dia Aug 04 2011 3:50 pm I thought I would like this jdrama cuz of the hype but it was very overrated. It was so over the top, random and weird..all they did was have dorm competitions,etc & they tried to make it too much like an anime. the storyline was lacking and the end was abrupt. the two main leads lacked chemistry. I like oguri shun but he had better roles like in hyd & never was a fan of maki cuz her acting is very bland. @_@
