Plot
Kim Rae-Won stars as the warm hearted chef-in-training Lee Sung-Chan, while actress Nam Sang-Mi plays a silly country girl, Kim Jin-soo, who trails Lee with high hopes of becoming a food columnist. Veteran actor Choi Bul-Am appears as Master Oh Sook-soo, Lee's stepfather and the only person who truly believes in Lee's potential.
Sung-Chan is a happy and bright young man who loves to cook. Leaving the heavy responsibility of becoming the head chef of Oh's famous restaurant to his stepbrother, he explores the world of cooking and discovers that he's actually good at it. When Oh announces that he will not choose his own son to become the owner and head chef, cold-hearted jealousy and competition arise.

Park Min Apr 12 2024 9:40 am It wouldn't have been a culinary piece without pulling the classic "like my mother used to make it" move with the nostalgia hit like Ratatouille. Cooking extravaganza, orgasm by taste, sabotaging rats, exotic ingredients, old rivals, and lvl 99 hidden chefs, they're all here as you would expect from such a theme. However, I wish it stuck to its culinary theme more tightly. There were a few detours here and there that didn't fit well. The butcher arc, specifically the first 2 rounds, was an example of the drama shifting away from the main characters and cooking. The drama also added a little bit of "supposed" romance but it was one of the driest displays of romance ever, they even turned it into a quick love square for one episode. The brothers rivalry was meh, I didn't like its progression nor its resolution. Aside from everything else, the one thing that pushed me to the limits was the inclusion of the deplorable trope of excessive constant interrupts. More often than not, cutting scenes and conversations short. This deplorable trope left such a nasty sour taste that I couldn't shake it off. It ruined what I might have liked about the drama.

Bongju and MinWoo are truly villainous throughout the whole show. They lied, cheated, stole to keep the restaurant away from the rightful heir, Sungchan. Bongju only cared about expanding and totally destroyed what made Woonnamjung so great. Minwoo is as evil and conniving as they come. He only looked out for himself and was willing to do anything to further himself. Bongju not only backstabbed his brother, but his father, and business partners. He may have reconciled with Sungchan in the end, but Bonju and Minwoo sent Master Oh to an early grave. The true hero is Sungchan, who when asked, gave up the restaurant, left his father, abandon the girl he loved, so his brother Bongju and Minwoo can destroy Woonamjung. The ending only shows what a great leader Sungchan is and why he is the rightful heir and should have been initial leader of Woonamjung. Also, the last couple of episode made Japanese the villians by saying that Japanese cooks are better at making Korean dishes than Koreans.
Nathaniel B. Apr 14 2022 10:08 pm A really easy watch. It's a pleasant drama with some sweet and tender vignettes. The main actors are very likeable, and in the end there wasn't a villain to be found. Just relax into it and learn about traditional Korean cuisine and how it's made. I swear I could taste the beautifully presented dishes with my eyes.

chard Nov 30 2016 8:43 am I love how the story works to this drama, rivalry between the characters is good to see and you will not know what will happen between the two of them. Family,love,friendship,foods are all in there. You will definitely love the flow of the story in every episodes.
laka Apr 09 2015 1:17 am a very average drama with excessive dragging sequences..i think the only good acting done in this drama is of kim rae won and the grand chef..other all actors are really mediocre with very limited expressions and emotions..also there is not much story to the drama..he leaves the restaurant for no genuine reason and keeps wandering here and there..and the stories of so many unwanted characters is featured everywhere just to eat up episodes and drag the story which is by itself very weak and slow moving..this reminds me of inspiring generation with so many unwanted and excess characters..also the head of the magazine company is really irritating with no humor quotient..and kim so yeon expressions are very limited...nam sang mi did an average job..but her character iss really a pushover..she has no other job than to tail kim rae won everywhere what a reporter..also their is no character development for any of them and the loveliness are so weak and slow to develop..also I never understand whyjoo hee never confessed her love for sung chan..the only good thing is that the drama has some beautiful ballads

I love Gourmet better b/c there's so much less animosity between the two chefs and in the end, there's a heartwarming brotherhood. =/
I haven't watched Le Grand Chef because I just found out about its existence but yeah...so much animosity, tension, and what looks like dirty play.
