Set in a parallel universe around the Edo period.
Alien species Amanto attack planet Earth. The people on Earth fight back against the aliens for more than 10 years. The Shogunate sees the power of Amanto and decide accept their conquest. The Shogunate builds a puppet government for Amanto and carry out the Sword Abolishment Edict. Due to these actions, samurai, that fought against the Amanto for their country and their lord, fall into a decline.
Gintoki Sakata (Shun Oguri) is a samurai and happens to meet people. He has an extraordinary experience.

See this movie with your love for what it is, a charming escape taking us away from the squalor of the real world for a little while. Don’t you dare overthink the plot and characters like the critics are trying to do. Just get some Parfait and relax.
Ah, and the animation is extremely excellent.
dzeke May 19 2018 10:55 am From a Gintama fan, this LA is not that bad. The characters are pretty good. I really like Oguri shun as gin here, shinpachi is also perfect. Kagura, on the other hand, not really though. she was a bit chubby and older than kagura i imagined. i did not like her voice, her fighting scene is also pretty rigid compared to gin or the others. Other supporting cast are good. but some few details bothered me. Kondo is surprisingly thin here, Hijikata's eyes are not that sharp, Why there's no bansai here, etc. Gengai and Henpeita(senior) is the funniest character here imo.

I saw Sadaharu and it's sooo cutee :3 He looks so soft and fluffy, I really want to hug him XD I thought there are some cast that not suitabel for the chara, like for Shinsuke and Isao, I though they should more younger and cooler :p
SilverSoul Feb 02 2018 12:20 pm The should have pick a better cast for Takasugi. Sorry but I don't think Domoto is the right Takasugi. Kondo in here is a bit too old compared to the anime/manga version. Kanna Hashimoto is pretty but to be cast as Kagura it seems to be a bit odd because Kagura is supposed to be a child age 13/14 and Kanna seems like 17+. Other casts, I think they are well selected. I could say I kinda like this live action but for the ending of this arc is a bit different from the original (I prefer the original). So overall is 7.5/10 for me

beside for overall this movie is really good and I think I watched this movie for at least 5 times? Haha soo funny ??? totally recommended!!!
Primmy Jan 09 2018 2:13 am Not familiar with the manga nor with the anime, but this movie is sooooooooo good! Kanpeki!!! I actually watched this on big screen but my friend and I were late for 30 minutes (which I thought then was okay cos I just really want to see Oguri Shun) but now I regret it so much cos those lost minutes were so precious. Good thing kissasian uploaded it and voila, I understood it and I loved it even more. Shun-kun my love is, as always, a very promising actor. Plus Suda, Okada, Yagira, and Yoshizawa were the all so handsome - so many ikemen!!! Totally recommended!!

This is a truly Gintama movie to the core Aug 22 2017 4:27 pm As an anime/manga fan, I'm very sceptical when it comes to live action adaptation movie although this year Ghost in the Shell is surprisingly good but not until the Gintama live action movie it finally blew me away. Gintama is my all time favourite comedy anime and probably the hardest anime to make a adaptation cause the whole series is a one big anime/manga parody but thanks to the director for understanding the source material all the jokes and references pull out very well. The cast definitely have a blast while making the movie cause not only they look very close but also portrayed very well all the beloved characters in the series. The production value is good when they manage to recreate all the little details and important aspect of the movie. Non-anime fan also can enjoy this movie and cause they choose the Benizakura arc which is the most easy arc to know all the characters. My problem is there not enough screen time for some character and one of the main villain of the series is Shinsuke Takasugi pretty laughable. There still some fan favourite side characters need to be introduce and the fight scene need to be better choreographed but I believe this is a good step for live action movie right now.

WoopWoop Jul 07 2017 7:52 am Seems rather underwhelming, but that's because they didn't show any of the goofy moments which Gintama is all about right? The last few seconds seem rather promising in that aspect :)
Btw I see that a lot of people complain about the Gintoki actor and it seems that they forget that Gintoki is actually fairly old(he isn't in his 20s) in the manga, it's just that the authors have chosen to make him look like he is in his 20s, because a younger looking character suits the manga more, but that doesn't change the fact that he was fighting in wars while Shinpachi was still a kid!

Well, except for Shun Oguri ? I am fine with his casting but it seems like some Shun Oguri fans are not happy that he's "nose picking" Gintoki. Though the teasers and posters have not yet shown Gintoki's goofy side, I hope the actor can showcase his comedy skills in the movie.

then it came, the producers, writer, director n gang might ruin the story. not as bad as hollywood did, but in some ways they will ruin the original plot,story and characters' styles.
the cast is quite good for me, some are my favourite. with good script and story, i hope i will enjoy the movie and wont hate them after watching the movie. huhuhu
i agreed with some earlier comment, they should cast shida mirai as kagura.

I agree that Shida Mirai is perfect for Kagura , she's petite and kinda resembles Kagura in so many ways xD and it's gonna be another movie together with Kamiki ^^ been a fan of this two since Tantei Gakuen Q =)
