Message passed on from a mailing list that I thought would be appropriate to the community (they want both undergrad and graduate papers).

On behalf of the Stanford Journal of East Asian Affairs, I would like to extend a warm invitation to students of your institution to submit their work for the upcoming 2010 issue.

*The Stanford Journal of East Asian Affairs showcases outstanding papers on East Asia and Southeast Asia written by undergraduate and graduate students; it is one of the few publications in existence with such a mission.

CFP: Japanese History - ERAS Journal

People may know about this already, but I thought I might pass it along:

The Eras on-line postgraduate journal is currently seeking submissions
of papers for publication for our forthcoming editions in 2008 and 2009.

Eras is a fully refereed on-line journal edited and produced by
postgraduate students from the School of Historical Studies at Monash
University, Melbourne, Australia which is intended as an international
forum for current or recently completed Masters and PhD students to
publish original research, comment and reviews in any field covered by
the Monash SHS's teaching and research. We are seeking papers from
postgraduate students working in any of the fields listed below, along
with a brief description of your current affiliation and thesis topic.

Eras publishes papers from the following disciplines: History,
Archaeology and Ancient History, Religion and Theology and Jewish
Civilisation. Papers are also strongly encouraged from students in other
disciplines, such as Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies, Gender
Studies, Philosophy, Sociology and Politics, providing such manuscripts
are relevant to the journal's primary disciplines.

For our upcoming editions we would be particularly interested in
submissions relating to Japanese history. Eras is a fully refereed
journal and all papers will be subjected to the standard refereeing
process. Papers should be up to 5,000 words in length and full
submission guidelines are available on the journal website:

CALL FOR PAPERS - U of Toronto

CALL FOR PAPERS

Eighth Annual East Asian Studies Graduate Conference at the University of Toronto

Mediations and Critique: Perspectives on East Asia
University of Toronto
Saturday, March 15, 2008

What insights can we gain by thinking of East Asian societies as always already mediated by language, disciplines, discourse, symbolic systems and representations? Our conference seeks to challenge participants to critically consider how various mediations are embedded in social existence and how we accommodate for them in our research on China, Korea and Japan.

The interdisciplinary conference welcomes research from graduate students in all fields of East Asian Studies, including but not limited to history, sociology, anthropology, economy, art, literature and philosophy. We invite papers that critically engage topics relevant to the issue of mediations in the East Asian context, such as (but not limited to) the role of media in constituting and defining a society; mediation of identities through technology and media; constructions of the other; history of mediations and mediations of history; historical development of media and its implications; questions of ontology, epistemology and phenomenology as they relate to the issues of mediations in East Asia.

We invite all those interested in presenting papers to submit an abstract (300 words maximum) and brief biographical information by December 21, 2007. We encourage submissions from both individuals and panels of three (panellists should send individual abstracts and a panel abstract). Please indicate whether you would like your completed paper to be considered for publication in the East Asian Studies Forum, journal published by graduate students of the East Asian Studies department of the University of Toronto.

Selected participants should submit completed papers by February 4, 2008. Those who wish their papers to be considered for publication should submit a publication-ready copy (about 3500 words). During the conference, participants will be given 15 minutes to present their work, so actual presentation papers should be about 1500-2250 words long. Additional information will be posted on the conference website, http://www.chass.utoronto.ca/easgsc.

Please email your submissions and questions to the Conference Committee at eas.conference.2008@gmail.com

New Journal on pre-modern Japan seeking submissions

I have been invited to become an editor for a new academic journal which is trying to get off the ground. The information about it follows:

The Samurai Archives Journal of Japanese History is a new and independently published journal devoted to the critical examination of the events and personalities of pre-20th century Japan.

The goals of the journal are to:

* Encourage new and established scholars to share their research, as well as to give independent scholars a forum for their work
* Introduce readers to the wealth of material available in Japanese and English
* Encourage interest and informed discussion on the topic of Japanese history

The journal is tentatively scheduled for publication in early 2008, and is currently accepting submissions.

Although the general focus of the journal is on military history and biography, articles dealing with all periods and subjects of Japanese history are welcomed; we demand only solid scholarship, clear writing and original ideas. Writers may approach their subjects from whichever field or discipline they wish.

For several years the Samurai Archives has been the most comprehensive and widely recognized source of Japanese history in English on the internet. This print journal will draw on the resources of the website and the talents of its members as well as the scholarship of other contributors to present an authoritative and entertaining quarterly on this fascinating subject.

We are welcoming submissions from people at all stages in their academic careers, from undergrads (or even high schoolers) through postdocs - please do not feel discouraged simply on this basis.

Also, for those of you who are not Japan specialists, if you have anything you'd be interested in submitting which pertains to Japan in even a somewhat peripheral way, it would still be great to hear from you. Ryukyuan history, Ainu topics, things about Southeast Asian maritime trade, the Sinocentric world order, Buddhism, and the Silk Road, are all plenty interesting and Japan-related topics which I am sure would be welcomed.

Thank you, and please feel free to ask any questions you might have.

Halfway was created by the members of RiceBowlJournals.com. Within these pages, you can find numerous articles to peak your interest in Asian affairs. Currently published online monthly, our writers work diligently to find topics of interest, and attempt to dispell ignorances.

Focusing on Asian aspects primarily, we strive to bring well-written stories, editorials, photography, and current event items to the currently too-dim spotlight on Asian cultures and lifestyles.

Halfway is to promote cultural awareness around the world. :]

I'm sure many of you are writers, artists, photographers.. so if you're of Asian descent or have had experiences in Asian countries and would like to write about them, or if you have taken photographs of Asia, or perhaps just like to draw... you can contribute to the magazine if you'd like. :]

I'm one of the staff writers, I write under "Aein." If you have any opinions, suggestions, or comments just let me know and stuff. =)

Asian Anthology, Call for Submissions!

A glimpse into the lives of female youth of Asian descent. A collection of voices often unheard. An outlet for the expression of experiences, memories and dreams of girls whose heritage and culture often clash with that of the mainstream. This collection aims to reach those who have shared a similar experience of searching for their own identity and is designed to strengthen and empower the female Asian community. Moreover, it hopes to break the stereotypes and false images towards this community promoted by society.

This anthology is the Leadership Action Project of Alda Chan, Joyce Lau and Elizabeth Yoo, young women of Sadie Nash Leadership Project, a program based in New York City promoting activism, leadership and empowerment of female youth.

We are looking for submissions of works by young women of Asian descent who are between the ages of 13-25. Short stories, poetry, prose, photography and artwork will be collected for submissions. Please include a brief biographical statement and reason for submitting your piece(s).

Writing Submissions – Please send five copies of each work. All submitted works must be unpublished

Artwork Submissions – Please submit two copies of each work. Color copies of the artwork are preferred. Please be aware that originals cannot be returned and become property of Echoes Under the Glass Ceiling.
