Deadlands: the rising
I will give these guys props; right up front they admit that their movie has nothing to do with any video games that are out, nor with any Brian Keene books (short aside – BRIAN KEENE IS AWESOME). This movie has done absolute miracles with a shoestring budget and is now among my top 10 all time favorite zombie movies. Where most would show all gore in as much detail as possible despite shitty effects this movie takes the higher road, in my humble opinion, and leaves more to the imagination in many cases – often blurring the shot which I think saved this movie from just being another cheap zombie flick. There are characters and situations that just make no sense. There are times when the dialogue could have been better and more realistic. BUT, saying that the situations were treated with more realism than most zombie movies can boast. The characters, for a much longed for change, acted intelligently (to a degree) and didn’t make me want to punch them in the face (with some exceptions). I think the biggest down fall to the movie is the scale involved. You’ll be shown a huge city – and then a tiny group of people who went to the safe house, with like five national guardsmen with them.
I really should stop watching scary movies with kids in them. I think I probably like this movie as much as I do because of the family that’s trying to escape. Specifically the mom who’s left at home alone with the son. She makes intelligent choices and by fucking god she gets her kid out of there. The dog? The dog is one of those things that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Did the dog get out? Is it still in the house? WTF about the dog!?! *shakes head* If you’re a zombie movie fan this is definitely one to pick up. You can tell the people who made this film are serious buffs who really put in the extra mile on this one. It keeps up the pace, is somewhat reasonable, has likeable characters and is a good time. Now, the ending? ECK!!! Are they leaving an opening for a part two? That’s what I’m hoping for sure. I’d buy the sequel! Just don’t keep me waiting too long folks. *taps foot*

I BEAT LAND OF THE DEAD!!!
sadly it was a little shorter than i would have liked, but not so short that i'm terribly pissed off about it. i think the fiddlers green area could have been expanded, i think more of the city of the dead stuff could have been expanded. hell, i think it was short changing to cut short the getting from place to place. BUT all that said it wasn't rediculously short. i mean i played it about 6 - 7 nights for several hours at a sitting. easy was tough enough to keep me on my toes AND here's the fun bit - the first person shooter limited vision allows the zombies to sneak up on you if you're not careful and listening intently. hell, if you're busy killing one you may not here the others. the game doesn't have newer badder zombies and boss fights the further you go in, it relies on startle factor, on forcing you to do a myriad of tasks and become adept with various weapons to keep you interested. in fact, i spent most of my time playing seriously stressed out. i worried constantly about getting eaten, i cursed the zombies that snuck up on me. i tried to beat back the horde when i got surrounded.
the game does not have a high budget, and the textures leave a lot to be desired. i really think that if they'd given this game more time and money it could have been a real classic. it ties in pretty well with the movie - though a couple slight quirks are different. annoyingly different. in fact, its set as a prequel to the movie, which i like. how did fiddler's green come about? now ya know, ya know. :) i also think there could have been more zombies and more interactions with live people, since its supposed to be set at the onslaught of shit going down. not everyone should be dead or gone yet right?
however, i give this game 4 out 5 stars for concept, execusion, and creep out factor. i can't think of ANY other game that's actually scared me - and i only play the horror games, so that's saying something really. it gets you emotionally involved with the character. you get truely pissed off at assholes and its a real good time all around. it captures the romero atmosphere wonderfully and expands upon it. finally YOU ARE the one stuck in the farmhouse with someone strange out in your yard. you are there as the power goes out and the bad news mounts.
i highly recomend this game, though getting a copy at a decent price is going to be tough. it was a small times game when it came out - only $20. now its no longer made, and the price for a used copy generally runs $30+. BUT its soooo worth it. even as a rental. give yourself a weekend to devote to it and have fun mowing down some zombie nasties!

not in a long time has a movie seriously screwed me up like this one. This isn't so much a horror movie as a gore movie. I'll admit that movies that rely more on torture than scariness aren't as good to me. I spend more time being bothered than i do worrying that the bad thing is going to get me too (which is the thrill in watching scary movies for me). BUT, while this movie does fall firmly in that catagory - it is the first movie i can think of since i was a young girl of five watching my first horror movies that made me cover my face during parts of it. Now, i always have either my jacket (if we're at the theator) or a blanket (if we're at home), pulled up just under my eyes, just in case for the REALLY REALLY good movies. but, i cannot think of the time where i've been forced to actually cover my eyes before. i have cringed, flinched, watched squinty eyed, but always before i COULD STILL WATCH. this movie is fucked up. i, the die hard, the gore fest lover, the critquer of bloody special effects, had to cover my eyes. just for a minute - but i WAS under the blanket for a minute. now, i've seen worse torture scenes. i've seen more blood and guts and i've certainly been more scared. but this movie freaked me out. no other way to describe it. i was stressed out for a good hour after watching it. its just SO HORRIBLE. EVERYTHING IN IT IS AWFUL. not, this movie was poorly done awful, awful in OH MY GOD THAT'S JUST HORRIBLE!!! do child laws allow kids of that age to play parts like this? did they film it somewhere where the laws are not applied to kids? holy fucking god what were they thinking.
oh, as to the quality of the movie. it has as the lead male role one of my least favorite men in the genra of ALL TIME. you usually only see him in horror porn. and while this movie does have a lot of "sex" in it oddly enough he's not the one having sex for a change. i just don't get the appeal of this guy. i have never seen him not looking really old and to me GROSS. ok, he's got long hair and an unusual voice - HE'S REALLY OLD. i guess that appeals to some women. ICK!!! maybe he's hung like a horse? dunno - i usually avoid watching movies with him in them.
yeah, no shit they banned this from cable broadcast. despite my hating the main guy character, his role is minimal. the story is about the prostitute he's spending the night with. and man, is her life messed up. jeez....
while the story is an engrossing one - there do seem to be a few plot holes. but, frankly the movie is so visceral that you just DO NOT CARE. i only now think of them. in a few scenes you see a ghost sneaking up behind the prositute - seen only by the guy but never explained. she does not resemble his sister nor his long lost love. why, did he leave his love at all, why not just take her immediately with him?
other than those things i was too distracted by the movie to notice more plot holes, but i'm sure there are more. also, WTF is up with the ending? was that really kimomo he killed or what? why the long story of the other girl then? the ending made not much in the was of sence - but by then i was still reeling from THE VERY BAD THINGS THAT CAME BEFORE. oh my god my mouth hurt for HOURS after watching this.

DARK REMAINS
Offical site. I have to tell you I haven't been this scared watching a movie in I don't know how long. Now, my husband and I are BIG FANS OF HORROR. We've seen a LOT of it at this point. We know what to expect where, all the classic shockem moves, cut scenes, and lead ups. This film takes that fact and uses it against the watcher. You're built up and built up where you think something is about to happen, and from previous movie knowledge you are expecting a specific shot - and as the tension increases because that shot never comes you get wound fairly tight. And then the moment is over and you relax, and the instant you relax the movie hits you from left field. At the same time mocking classics shots and then using your expectance of them to scare the fuck out of you.
Aside from one character this movie was really well acted in my opinion. I spent a great deal of time cursing at the screen - not because the film was annoying me but because I knew the characters were doing something that was going to lead to me screaming. And SCREAM I DID!!! It was to the point where I couldn't have my feet hanging off the couch. The story was extremely well played out, an excelent plot all around. Keeping you on your toes till the end! And the ghosts? Holy cow I haven't seen ghosts acted so well EVER. The makeup was superbly done. There was plenty of twists and turns to keep your mind reeling through the whole thing. This movie was FUCKING AWESOME, a real gem, a must have for any horror movie fan. Go watch it tonight, I just don't suggest watching it alone.
Flesh Eating Mothers
Basically there's a virus that only affects women who've had children. It makes them HUNGRY. When they run out of roast beef and tuna sandwiches little Jimmy starts looking pretty tastey apparently. Its incredibly low budget, horribly acted and just plain freakin FUN! I think the best part is the cartoon view through the microscope showing the virus. Worht watching the movie just to laugh at that. The 80's dress and hair styles are a hoot as well. You spend a lot of time just wondering what the heck these people are thinking. It doesn't have a big rewatch value for sure, BUT it is totally worth watching at least once, especially for the fan of campy. Some of it really did push my button of creep-o, but I think that has more to do with having a young child myself. It is gorey, if poorly done, and the zombie-like moms are a hoot. It is definately a lesser known gem, worth seeing! Again, IF you're a fan of campy. DO NOT go into this expecting to be scared.

Trailer. oh yes, couldn't help but go watch this one. And you have to watch it, because SAM RAIMI has a hand in it!!! Sam, Sam, he's our man! LOL. I have to say the very first scene in this movie is my favorite (I've been speaking highly of the frying pan as a weapon for YEARS). Its harsh and aburt and sets the tone of the movie immediately.
Well, we saw this flick in the theator on the 13th and there were 8 million teeny boppers in there, and I think they all sat to the left of us. They were loud and annoying and screamed the WHOLE TIME. I think I might have found the marginally scary scenes more scary if I weren't so busy laughing at these kids! The only reason I would recommend seeing this film is if you see it in the theator. Cause the loudness and the biggness of the screen are the only hope this flick has of scaring you. Don't get me wrong, I really liked the movie on some points. It was a LAUGH RIOT!!! But scary it was not, as far as I'm concerned.

Susperia is a Dario Argento film. That ALONE should tell you that YES, indeed you should be checking out this flick. Argento is without a doubt a master of horror and Susperia is one of his most hailed films! About the movie itself, this is what you'd call artistic horror. Everything about it is beautiful and purposefully done. From the sets used, from the color scheme employed to the actors themselves - this flick is eye candy. Can a pretty horror be scary? Does arty signify less than gorey? The first time I watched it I was creeped out. And the coolest part is this guy can give you tons of scary atmosphere and tension building without having to resort to the cheesy tactics of today's horror. The gore is most definately there, but the plot doesn't rely on it to scare the pants off you. Much can also be attributed to Goblin who have done the sound tracks for so MANY classic horror movies. The old school styles of Argento can be seen in bits and pieces of so many later works. He was truely part of a lot of ground breaking that went on in the early 70's to early 80's. The man is one of my top heros! The movie does employ the occassional effect that was probably completely new and awesome at the time, but today's viewers may not appreciate it for its past glory, and there was one dreaded "bat scene, BUT, even that was well done due to the acting being realistic. I really have to hand it to the lead actress. She was a gem in this flick. She blended innocent charm with an I'm not taking your bullshit attitude. I will say this, and this isn't spoiling anything since its right in the description, the use of "witches" as the bad guy did cut a little close to home, BUT realizing that it is fiction - a movie generated to create money and scare folks - I don't really care. In horror it doesn't matter who the "bad guy" is, there is always going to be the element of the fantastical and the down right wrong and blown out of the water. It wouldn't sell otherwise. I haven't seen any nuns complaining about movies about scary nuns, (there are such movies!) so I'm ok.

Here's the trailer to the movie. Argento is the must have in your collection director. I am in the process of getting all of his movies and they will of course be reviewed so for those that just want the cream of the crop. I did a review for The Church in my personal journal a while back and will shortly post it in here as well. Tonight, I'm hoping to watch Deep Red, and that will likely be tomorrows's review! This is a GREAT movie, and all levels. Its so hard to get stellar acting in a horror flick, but this movie delivers. GO WATCH IT!!!
