SGA Rodney hands

SGA SANTA

*sings* It's the most wonderful time of the year.

Hurray, sga_santa has been posting for a week or so. The story I wrote may or may not have been posted, but the story I received has been, and it's wonderful. ♥

Love is Written in poetry, Marriage in Prose is a lovely Keller/McKay story which ends well on its way to Keller/McKay/Sheppard. It has a wonderfully mature Jennifer who understands a lot, but is still learning about her relationship with Rodney, and his relationship with John--and how they can all make it work. I really enjoyed it, so if that sounds like it might be at all your thing I urge you to read it!

The only problem with sga_santa is that it can be overwhelming--and this year seems more overwhelming than usual, to me (I guess I'm just in that kind of state)--with all the many, many stories being posted.

Here's a very short, very incomplete list of stories I've liked so far, if you're having a hard time deciding where to begin (I haven't come close to getting through them all, but it's a start):

The Hunters: (Mostly gen, some Keller/McKay UST) Fantastic adventure through an underground cave/fortress with Teyla kicking butt and Jennifer holding her own.

Beasts of War and Burden: (McKay/Sheppard) In an alternate universe, John, Lorne and Rodney get turned into dragons by an Ancient device. Rodney gets stuck.

Baby Steps: (McKay/Sheppard) Sweet and funny story about what happens when John and Rodney don't have to hide their relationship anymore.

Unexpected Consequences: (McKay/Sheppard) Old-school hooker-fic wallow. Definitely hits the spot.

Forbidden Planet: (McKay/Sheppard, but pretty gen) Neat mission-on-Earth feel.

Someone to Watch Over Me: (McKay/Sheppard) Dark and very cool. Post-enzyme!Ford is the reasonable one.

A Fist Full of Power Bars: (gen) Hysterical alien animal story. Oh, John.

Accidental Vampire (McKay/Sheppard): Completely entertaining and gleeful and hit my kinks hard.

*whew* Go get reading and commenting!

Recs! (Rodney/Teyla and McShep)

So I've finally had time to dive into sticksandsnark. Everything there is worth taking a look at (and Rodney/Teyla is a pairing that deserves some love, imo), but here are a few favorites so far:

Confluence by carolyn_claire.

Rodney and Teyla get trapped in a different time and have to work together to figure a way back home. This is darling, with just the kind of Rodney I like to read--scared, yet brave, and inspired to his best by Teyla's utter confidence in his abilities. The burgeoning relationship is charming. a very, very enjoyable story. (Rodney/Teyla)

your mouth as some surprise by siriaeve

Rodney and an injured Teyla spend some time at a Pegasan monastery. This has siriaeves trademark lyricism and pretty much the *perfect* Teyla POV. Wonderful world-building and all around loveliness. (Rodney/Teyla)

The Woods Are Haunted, Dark and Deep by astridv

This is a wonderful art piece by astrid featuring a wounded Rodney, protective Teyla, and space wolves (fine it's only the eyes of the animals, but I like to think of them as space wolves.) Amazing. (Rodney/Teyla)

[BTW, My story is here: With Friends Like These (John Will Never Make the Kessel Run in Less Than Five Parsecs). Reeeead iiiit.]

And for something in a McShep:

Black Helicopters at Dawn by whizzy

It's easy to overlook a story by a new author in the fandom, but this is an AU definitely worth checking out. It's satisfyingly long at 64,000 words, and John and Rodney are both wonderful here. The plot involves a Rodney who has retired from his corporate research job to prove to the world that aliens exist (and the government is covering it up.) One aspect I really enjoyed was that in this AU it is *John* who works for the SGC and Rodney who does something else, instead of the other way around.

So there you have it, go read. :)

SGA Bigbang

By no means comprehensive recs, but I wanted to get a few out there. All McShep for now.

I've been really in the mood for just happy-making, warm stories with the angst dialed down lately. (Note: I am Queen of Angst, so ymmv on the "dialed-down" thing.) If you have been in that mood too, I give you two stories:

Zen and the Art of Jumper Maintenance by indybaggins
Rodney gets sucked into the time dilation field from Epiphany and John follows. This story is warm and sweet with fantastic supporting characters, and a lovely growing relationship between John and Rodney. It's curl-up-with-a-hot-chocolate fic; I don't care if it's summer.

A Clear And Different Light by sholio and naye
This fic is wonderful, despite the cognitive dissociation of me reading "A Clear and Present Danger" every time I see the title. It's fantasy--Teyla is a rune expert, Ronon has wings, and John is a fae. And Rodney--Rodney was raised mostly by whales due to his neglectful parents. He has his own pod. There is whale math, people. And so many other wonderful whale things that I would gush about, but I don't want to give them away. Grand fantasy and adventure.

Two other quick notes:

If you need an h/c fix, then Second Chance by Madison (sgamadison) is the way to go. John chooses not to go to Atlantis with the expedition. The story explores his life with the Sheppards, and then really brings the hurt/comfort. Long, lovely and satisfying.

For something completely different (but not in a Python kind of way), there's The Fall of the House of Sheppard by Martha (saffronhouse) which re-imagines Outcast as a Roger Corman filming of a Poe story. There's even a nod to the AIP scream queens. Loved this story So Much. Heed the warnings.

Post of Fun!

Or more fun than it's been around my LJ lately, anyway. It's been a tough summer for me, and I haven't been posting much, so I wanted to make a post that doesn't involve me whining and involves things my flist may actually be interested in. *waves to new friends*

1. Let's start off with a rec. quasar273 asked me to beta a story a little before the SGA season began. I wasn't able to (see above, re: horrible, tough summer), but that meant I got the joy of being a reader when she posted it. Opportunity Knocks is amnesia fic of a sort, and it is awesome. Funny and fluffy and angsty and yay, amnesia fic! The summary says: A digruntled minion hands Rodney an opportunity in disguise. I've wanted to rec this for a while. Go read it, if you haven't, and give quasar some love.

2. I've also been thinking about this: Can I rec a rec site? Sure I can! Rec Room, run by cupidsbow was pretty much my intro to SGA fic back when it was a comm on livejournal, and it's still my favorite rec site now that it's on delicious.com. (Digression: does anyone else miss the .us that used to be on the end? I always thought that was cute.) cupidsbow is really well organized, and I have no idea how she manages to devour so many stories and vids. You will not go wrong with her recs. I um, have a button for rec_room on my bookmark toolbar, that I press a *lot*. Multi-fandom.

3. I don't listen to pop music, for the most part. I know, get your jaws off the floor. So I'm a bit late to this party. I've been peripherally aware of the whole "I Kissed A Girl," song thing for a while, but haven't paid much attention. I never actually heard the song, and I sort of vaguely figured it was a remake of the old Jill Sobule song. Then I saw a news report about it, and seriously, this is news? This is a hit song? Besides being truly bad, the whole thing strikes me as so fifteen years ago. Aren't we past that? Are we as a culture seriously still titillated by the idea of two girls getting it on? I mean on a case by case basis, sure, titillate away, but as a pop culture phenomenon I'm disappointed in America. Ooh, she liked it. She hopes her boyfriend don't mind it. Whatever.

So, because I promised fun--here's Jill Sobule's I Kissed A Girl which is 1,000,000 times better and came out in 1995. *does hypno-eyes* downlooaaaad iiiiit

4. I have to send an email out to my best friends who have known me for FIFTEEN YEARS and have suddenly decided en masse this year that we all need to make a list of what we want for our birthdays. I have been putting this off, because I am incapable of asking for stuff. And seriously, FIFTEEN YEARS. I would have thought they knew me well enough by now to buy me a freakin' birthday present, but apparently not.

5. Lastly--for the past few years, my sister has gotten me the SGA DVDs for my birthday, so I don't have much longer to wait, but I just couldn't take it anymore. I broke down and dl'ed the deleted scenes.

6. Okay, lastly for real. I hope everyone on my flist is well. *hugs you all* Tear yourself away from the Olympics for a few minutes and say hi!

Argosy Finally Gets the Recognition She Deserves

At last, I'm popular.

Two of my D/Hr stories have just become featured stories at two very lovely sites. The Petulant Poetess is featuring As Sharp As Any Thorn, and Pureblood is featuring Where the Magic Is.

I know nearly everyone on my f-list arrived via these two stories, so I want to take a moment to thank you guys for your reading and your friendship, and say how thrilled I've been at the opportunity to get to know so many wonderful people!

ETA: And now I am told Of Dark and Bright is featured at OWL. **happy dance** This story, particularly, needs some love. That means you should read it... Yay!

Snupin Recs -- Yay!!!

A while ago, when the shipping meme was going around, a bunch of you expressed some surprise that I was secretly a Snupin lover. I've been wanting to get some recs together since then. So in the spirit of coming completely out of the closet, and for some new friends I have recently made who also feel the Potion Master/Werewolf love, I give you:

Argosy's Snupin Recs

This list is by no means comprehensive, but they are all wonderful. If anyone has any favorites that I have missed, please let me know.
