Title: Faith
Author: Melissa Grey
Prompt: Legend of Zelda, Zelda/Link: hurt/comfort - The triforce didn't give you courage, it chose you because of it.
Rating: E is for everyone
Warnings: None
Word Count: 264
A/N: Set during Ocarina of Time, but I'm basing Sheik's appearance on her Smash Brothers modifications - as in, she's noticeably female. I tried to remain true to her Ocarina of Time characterization but the pronouns got confusing.
"Take it back."
Link held the sword up in offering to Sheik. After the Water Temple, he'd come back here to the Temple of Time. This is where it had started. This is where he would make it end. He'd licked his wounds and found the poison inside. He'd looked his own darkness in the eye and in it, he had drowned. No heroes had been made. No days would be saved. Not by his hand. Not with this sword.
"You know I can't do that," Sheik said, standing a step above him, arms at her sides.
"No, I don't know that. I can't do this. It's too much," he said. He heard the little boy he'd abandoned in this Temple. He wondered if Sheik could, too.
"Link," Sheik began, voice soft. She brought her hand up to his cheek, gloved fingers tracing a ghost of a line on his skin. Her other hand covered his, lowering the sword. She bent down and brushed her lips over the line her fingers had made. He froze.
"The Triforce did not give you courage. It chose you because of it. It's up to you to find it, but know that it is there," she whispered against his skin.
In the blink of an eye, she disappeared as though she'd never been there. Link brought his hand up to this cheek, hovering over the spot she had kissed. He knew it was impossible, but for one shining moment he had heard Zelda's voice in Sheik's, felt her lips on his skin, and knew that he could win.

on 2009-09-01 12:42 am (UTC)Yeah, the issue of Sheik's gender is just too much for me to deal with, especially in writing so I just simplified. Besides, I like how Sheik was Zelda's warrior spirit in the game and I think stripping her of her womanhood basically undermines her as a character. She got to be something other than a damsel in distress and I loved it.
