Overview
The Official Wayback Machine Extension - by the Internet Archive.
Welcome to the Official Internet Archive Wayback Machine Browser Extension! Go back in time to see how a website has changed through the history of the Web. Save websites, view missing 404 Not Found pages, or read archived books & papers.

Most features will work without requiring an account including Save Page Now.

Some features must be enabled from Settings. Turn on Private Mode to prevent automatic sending of data and to protect your privacy while browsing.

Features

• Save Page Now - Instantly save the page you are currently viewing in the Wayback Machine. Turn on Auto Save Page in settings to save pages that have not previously been saved, or Auto Save Bookmarks to save when bookmarking a page. Works while logged out, or log in for additional options.

• Oldest, Newest & Overview - View the first version of a page or the most recently saved in the Wayback Machine. Or view a calendar overview of all archived pages. Can also use by right-clicking over a page or link.

• Wayback Machine Count - Display a count of snapshots of the current page stored in the Wayback Machine over the toolbar icon, and the date of last save in the popup.

• 404 Not Found - When an error occurs, automatically check if an archived copy is available. Checks against 4xx & 5xx HTTP error codes.

• Contextual Notices - Check for contextual information from fact checking organizations and origin websites.

• Relevant Resources - View research papers and books while visiting Wikipedia, archived digitized books while visiting Amazon Books, and recommended TV News Clips while visiting news websites.

• URLs & Collections - Show a list of URLs captured under the current website, and what collections they are saved under.

• Site Map & Word Cloud - Present a sunburst diagram for the domain you are currently viewing, or create a Word Cloud from the link's anchor text of the page you are on.

• Annotations - Provide a list of annotations for the current web page and domain, provided by Hypothes.is.

• My Web Archive - Save URLs to your public archive page on the Internet Archive.

• Tweets & Share Links - Search Twitter for information regarding your current page, or share archived links on social media.

Save feature broken.

For awhile, it didn't want to save pages, but it works now, but why am I getting an error for a 2GB file size limit, when it clearly says on their website this? "Is there a limit to the number of files or the size of the file that I can upload? Currently, there is no limit on the size of files nor the number of files. However, from a systems perspective, we do not recommend files larger than 50 GBs to be uploaded or more than 1000 files, per single page."

OMG thank you for this extension, I can basically go back in time and explore old articles on the web using this and feel what it is like to surf the web during those time, thank you!

Practically the most effortless extension ever. I love using it and it's been in the background ever since I installed it.

Great Extension Two things to consider: 1) always keep me logged in 2) ability to save more frequently if I am a member who donates

I'm only going back to this archiver because my favorite one seems to have been hit with bots to the point that I can't archive anything anymore. I use an archiver for our blog and podcast, and typically I just want to use the archived link so that the original page doesn't disappear and so that when we're live, we don't get hit with ads and popups. Functionally, Wayback is OK - but it doesn't do the single thing I need it to do: archive the site and GIVE ME THE FREAKING LINK to the archived page on the spot. It takes me more time to go to the Wayback website (or my list on their website) and find the page I just archived than it takes me to find the original article and write the blog post around it.

Great Project/extension Updating and raising my Rating because it seems more reliable now than in May 21. I think the Dashboard has changed a lot to the better. Perhaps I wasn't being careful enough of conflicting extensions the other time.

I only installed this because the (third-party) extension "Save to the Wayback Machine" is stopping in 2023. I installed this previously but uninstalled because you had to have an account, reinstalled when the extension page said you don't have to have an account now. This one has a lot more buttons, but the "Save Page" function doesn't work at all. Recommend just copying the other extension.

Used to do what it says but now that you're required to sign in to save a webpage. I have a login error using my previously created account. Even signing into my archive.org account on the webpage doesn't change the status. I can't save anything now because of this. I am not sure why an account is now required to use all functionalities, if it's required I would like to be able to actually sign in.

It's great to be able to help archiving without really paying attention to it and also having use out of it if a website is down!

Works very well. I especially like the feature that shows you how many times a page has been saved, it helps when exploring old (or very new!) sites to find what I should archive.

The latest update has some new features that would make it easier to archive not only the page itself but also outlinks and more. Unfortunately, no matter which page I go to, it kept giving me the message "Save Failed" even if I can save the page, outlinks, and more on web.archive.org instead.

It now requires a login. They claim to hold privacy to a high standard, but now want personally identifiable information? I understand that to offer a personal archive, that's necessary - but the anonymous option should be permitted (and the default setting). The 'private mode' is also not selectable without diving into settings. Regular user is probably going to forget about it. Do these settings and extension installation compromise incognito mode? I would appreciate a change in the taskbar icon color if the page is unarchived, then I could decide if it should be archived or not. Or announced up-front after clicking the icon - instead of having to go look at the page on archive.org. Would be nice to know if: never archived, archived >1 month ago, archived longer than one day ago, archived today - some sites don't need frequent updating, some change on a minute-by-minute basis. I've seen PDFs with 1000s of snapshots - which are totally un-needed, as the resource has never changed. "it can now [r]ead and change all your data on the websites you visit" - is required in order to seemlessly load and show archived content when a 404 is thrown during a websurfing session. However, for those paranoid people who do not want to give up control, it should be possible to make a clean extension - without such permissions - that allows you to grab the url, and when clicked, check and present the archive.org most-recent version.

Always Login Error
Christoph EngelhardtMar 5, 2022

Wayback Machine was ok until last update. Now the extension requires login for some operation, which would be ok. But email and password, which are accepted when logging in at the Wayback Machine-site is not accepted here, so login is impossible. Multiple password reset without change of this behaviour. Does not work any more. It is a pity.

I have precisely the same issue, Christoph. It's been almost three weeks since I brought it up on the "Support" page and no response. Archives and log history work perfectly at the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine, but attempting to use the Chrome extension results in a not-informative "Login error." It doesn't matter whether I'm logged in or out of the Wayback Machine at the time. In addition to the same password resets as you've done, I've uninstalled and reinstalled the Chrome extension two times in the hopes starting over would correct the problem. Loss of such a valuable extension is a shame.

It worked flawlessly and was perfect, but now appears to require one to sign in to save a webpage from within the extension.

It is an amazing tool that bridges the gap between casual web browsing, and more serious/deliberate web archival. As an avid user of the wayback machine, having this tool catch all the pages as I visit them while I don't make more in depth captures is amazing. If you don't have it yet, grab it, and set it to make automatic captures, it will help with preservation a lot.

Good, but I would like it to automatically load the most recent version of a page when met with a 404 message. I don't know if that's already supposed to happen, but it doesn't seem to work on custom 404 pages as far as I can tell.

Worked perfectly fine until recently, now all I get is "save failed." Using save page now on the website still works though.

AmberDambey GamingFeb 17, 2022

Never does anything of use. It also interferes with my search engine where (I think) the "no more results found" text at the bottom of the page gets interpreted as a 404 screen. It also hardly ever detects actual 404 pages.

Error file size limit 2GB
Why is there an 2GB files size limit error, when on the website it clearly says this.. ? ----------------------written on Archive.org -------- Is there a limit to the number of files or the size of the file that I can upload? Currently, there is no limit on the size of files nor the number of files. However, from a systems perspective, we do not recommend files larger than 50 GBs to be uploaded or more than 1000 files, per single page.

Outlinks button 90% sure does not work.
Great extension just one minor issue thing. About 90% the outlinks checkmark button does not work. Unless i'm mistaken that if checked its supposed to also archive the outlinks of the page like when if saving directly on the wayback website. I have never seen the outlinks saved either while auto archiving or the manual archive from the button from the extension. Its a minor thing its just odd I have never seen it work despite the checkmark for it. Not sure if its a bug from the button or some issue when trying to archive. Version 3.1

Choose to exclude a page/site
I have this extension installed but want to exclude it trying to archive my blog admin pages - at the moment I get a 404 in the logs from wwwb-spn05.us.archive.org when I log into the blog to create a new post or edit an existing one. It would be great to have a feature where you could, for example, say exclude anything that started with www.domain.co.uk/directory... (I would want to block www.domain.co.uk/directory/wp-admin/ for example)

Auto Save Page
I would like to use the Auto Save function, for something like every 30 days or so. But it appears that when enabled it applies to all web sites I visit. I get concerned when the web page in question is my personal email. I realize the Wayback Machine does not have the ability to go into password protected sites but I really would prefer to only auto update pages on a site-by-site basis. And I don't mind a few cookies being stored to do this. Thanks! ~Doug

"Wayback Machine" disappeared from the right-click menu of Google Chrome on Windows 11
After switching to Windows 11, the Google Chrome extension "Wayback Machine" disappeared from the right-click menu, which is very inconvenient. Deleting, rebooting, and re-adding did not fix the problem, nor did I find a solution on the web.

Fix. https://i.imgur.com/uQ63Iq0.png When I log into the new Chrome, the extension doesn't seem to carry over. (Keep extension but disable) I didn't even get a popup for "Accept and Enable".

Personal information collected by extension
I think this extension is a great idea and I'd love to use it - but your Privacy practices section says you collect authentication information: "Authentication information For example: passwords, credentials, security question or Personal Identification Number (PIN)" Does this mean that this extension would be saving all passwords that I enter on various websites? That would be a hard pass from me if so... :/

how to archive lazy loading images
Could you please make an option to archive lazy loading images? The lazy loaded images can not be archived now. For example this page: https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/N4mJaePCXXH3b04290W1pQ, the archived page does not show any images: https://web.archive.org/web/20220720103517/https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/N4mJaePCXXH3b04290W1pQ

Internet Archive Chrome Extension
Can log in and out at archive.org just fine, but the Chrome extension continues to fail with "Login Error" when I try to give the same log-on credentials to the extension in the "Save to My Web Archive" setting. Have waited multiple days; rebooted several times meanwhile; tried with and without a VPN active; am not trying to use the "Auto Save Page" feature, just the manual save; am running Chrome v102.0.5005.63 on Windows 10 v21H2, OS Build 19044.1706. Any hints as to how I can get this valuable feature to work? Thanks!

The archived site does not appear by adding chrome in the archived site section of the archive.org site.
Mashallah It was a big move in adding and using archive service. After experimenting several times when clicking on the archive it appears that the archive was done but when I enter my account I do not find the archived site by the tool in my account I do not know if this is a problem or does archive in general.

Sorry, the problem has been solved. Go to the next track by adding Chrome Settings > general >click and selcte save to my archive web
