hey LJ - this is where i used to do Doctor Who stuff, so i thought... if i'm going to write a post about my thoughts on doctor who (which i watched late, so with a very particular spoilerific lens) i might as well cross post them here.
I will cut for spoilers (thanks for nothing Tumblr!) - although I assume everyone knows, like I knew!
soooooo - i saw the gifs, I knew that ‘best enemy’ was back. so i knew all the way through - which i think is a shame. but allowed me to watch the whole episode with a sort of amused fondness, viz this is shameless.
when he asked about what it was like to work with the doctor.
twice.
so embarrassing. but also - i liked it. he would do that.
it sort of made the reveal a bit of a shame - because thus far the version of the master they’ve gone with is very influenced by crazy!simm, hyperactive. and what we saw in the rest of the episode is someone who is very calm and plots the long game, and whereas when we had the same reveal in ‘utopia’, yana was literally gone replaced with a new man. and there was regeneration energy to think about, etc etc.
so... i guess we see how episode 2 goes!
the scene with the bomb, and the master going ‘aha, you can’t stop the bomb’ - i was literally sitting here in my home going ‘as if the master would blow himself up, come on. it cannot be lethal’, and then it wasn’t - and then the plane started crashing, and he was like ‘ahaha - i’ve got you now’ and i thought ‘as if the doctor will be killed by a plane’. but then the plane crash wasn’t the thing.... instead it’s a weird place without anyone.
the plan seems really overcomplicated and nonsense. but ... i can’t complain about it. that’s in character for this character. why pretend to be an mi6 agent for years... because why not? and it gave him plenty of stalking time. it makes sense - even though it doesn’t make sense.
also - every time stephen fry was on screen i thought someone was going to say to him ‘you’re stephen fry’. it felt like that was the next line of dialogue almost every time. i’m glad he got killed early. too distracting.
also - mi6 not believing in aliens is also a bit stupid. but whatever.
the spy stuff was good fun although also a bit mad to pretend this isn’t normal life with teh doctor as well - i liked how much they went into the genre, though. and i lolled at the laser shoes.
also - the master is right, and tech companies are more powerful than countries. it’s super hard to get anything done in government. i’m not sure i completely agree that the government outsourcing to those big companies is the issue in terms of control - though it is definitely a problem from a financial control perspective, and something the government is attempting to address...
come and talk to me more about government technology - i have views about government technology.
ETA - gosh, i’m such a shipper/master-stan. i really had very few thoughts about last season, and then all they need to do is put my fav back into it, and i’m like... ok, so what are we doing with this? I DONT KNOW IF I LIKE IT.
i’m not saying, i want to write it. i dont think i do (I HAVE A NEW FANDOM NOW, LEAVE ME ALONE) (honestly, i dont think i can or would want to write it - it was like 10 years ago). but it *is* interesting to me in a way that just casually going about business is not.
i didn’t watch most of the capaldi era, and i only watched missy’s first few episodes - i didn’t watch simm’s return at all, just heard about it second hand. because i didn’t trust moffatt to write the ship, and he made it straight. which - of course - we’ve done again by turning the master back into a man, but.... whatevs, let’s go with it. HMMM. old fandoms. what do i FEEL??
it was only the other day i was saying it definitely wasn’t my most missed.

Date: 2020-01-04 10:29 pm (UTC)yes- feels very RTD influenced, which i think.... is good? i dont' know! part 2 tomorrow.
i think i probably enjoyed the episode more knowing the reveal, which is weird because i also would have enjoyed going 'OH MY GOD ARGH!!!!' but instead i was like 'oh, master - what are you like?' and i felt a lot of fondness to everything.

Date: 2020-01-05 08:30 pm (UTC)Echoing John though - Missy was fab, especially in S10, and the two Masters were great, much better than the poor Simm!Master ever got to be before.

Date: 2020-01-05 10:18 pm (UTC)I agree about the bomb and how it doesn't make sense that MI6 doesn't believe in aliens, but they also know about Torchwood? Just makes them seem stupid. I am also still not enjoying Chibnall's linear storytelling (this happens, then this, then this), and as much as I really, really want to like Whitaker's Doctor, I just don't.
