Open-Access Publication Procedures for Authors
As a pioneer of open-access, peer-reviewed scholarly publication, APJJF is committed to ensuring that all journal content remains open-access for both readers and authors. In short, no author will ever have to pay out of pocket to publish with APJJF.
Because APJJF research content (“research article,” “research note”, and “analysis” categories) is published through Cambridge University Press, authors of these pieces will receive a publication agreement from Cambridge University Press upon approval of their manuscript along with an invoice from Copyright Clearance Center RightsLink for “Article Processing Charges” that authors of CUP journals are typically expected to pay. Because APJJF has a special arrangement with CUP to publish all content open-access, authors should by no means pay these fees out of pocket under any circumstances. Instead, authors should follow the steps outlined below to avoid paying these charges. Please make sure to read through all the steps, as circumstances will change depending on authors’ institutional affiliation.
- When prompted to select a Creative Commons license for their manuscript, authors should select the option for Open-Access.
- If an author’s institution has an institutional open-access publication agreement with Cambridge Core (check eligibility here), they should select the appropriate agreement type. In many cases, authors are covered by a “Gold OA” agreement between Cambridge University Press and their institution.
- Authors whose institutions are not part of the Gold OA program or who are not otherwise eligible for other open-access arrangements (such as independent scholars) should apply for an “APC full waiver” when filling out their Author Information Form.
- Authors will receive an automated invoice from Copyright Clearance Center RightsLink requesting payment of Author Processing Fees, the amount of which will vary according to the inputs from steps 2 and 3. Authors should not be alarmed to see the fees on this invoice total as much as $3,500, should by no means pay these fees, and should rest assured that no author will ever pay out of pocket to publish with APJJF.
- Soon after applying for the APC full waiver, authors will receive a separate e-mail from [email protected] containing a RightsLink code that can be entered as a “Promotion Discount Code” during the open access article transaction process to eliminate the processing fees. This e-mail can take several days to arrive, so please check your spam mail folder or add [email protected] to your e-mail safe list to ensure proper receipt of the e-mail containing the code.
If any difficulties or questions arise regarding manuscripts or the open-access agreements and waivers, please contact the journal editors directly or at [email protected].
