    Critically Endangered

Red Wolves are one of the most endangered wolves in the world. They were once common throughout Eastern and South Central United States but were decimated by the early 20th century as a result of intensive predator control programs and the degradation and alteration of the species’ habitat.

    History

Though red wolves once ranged across the southeastern United States, years of hunting and habitat loss had driven the species to the brink of extinction by 1970. As part of an ambitious captive-breeding program, the U.S Fish & Wildlife Service captured the 14 remaining red wolves they could find in the wild.
