15,000 Strong Demonstration in Montreal Against the Budget

a report from Union Communiste Libertaire (UCL)

Against privatization and price increases: ONLY THE STRUGGLE PAYS!

On April 1st 2010, some 15,000 people descended on the business district in Montreal at the call of more than 95 unions, popular, feminist and student groups. Is this the first stage of a response against the Liberal budget? Only time will tell. In any case, it was a nice demonstration--a popular grand procession, very diverse and militant (at least in discourse).

We now know that the budget tabled on March 30th by Minister Bachand introduced a host of measures, each more regressive than the one before. The introduction of new fees for healthcare or the rapid growth of sales tax (QST) are examples. The rich will fare quite well, as usual. Nothing in this budget calls into question their privilege and their little schemes to stash their money in tax-free havens. Again, we are required to sacrifice for them. There's no justice, there's just us.

Here's a welfare horror story you won't read about in the right-wing press:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commenti…

There will be no questions in the House over this. No public enquiry. Simply put, nobody cares.

This is never going to change, and in fact it will get much, much worse. People will be dropping out of tower blocks like flies by the time the Tories and Labour have finished with their new clampdown / dragnet on the sick and the mentally ill.

This is purely and simply because there is nobody to stop them. The Left are too busy supporting terrorists and dictators, the liberals are too busy excoriating the Left for the above, face it, nobody gives a toss about ordinary people, particularly the poor and vulnerable. Everyday life is jut not on the radar politically and every means to get it on the radar has been co-opted by power-hungry scum and middle class hippy-dippy twerps. There's no justice, there's just us.

We're all fucked.

Interested in alternative viewpoints of our current financial crisis

All of the tv talking heads and print analysis tends to repeat some variation of the standard Neoclassical or even Keynesian logics behind what has gone wrong, what can be done to perhaps "fix" the crisis and what is predicted to come later. I am curious about any more radical interpretations or ideas. You can skim the below article for ideas. I agree that this is probably not "THE" crisis of capitalism, but it is a transformative point possibly leading to larger worker progress, yet also with the potential to just make things worse for workers. Feel free to include what the new American administrations effects could be. I see some neo-Keynesian and/or post-Keynesian new synthesis with investment in longer term infrastructure that could strengthen unions, workers, wages, living standards and even a more social form of capitalism. But, I also admit to spurts of self delusion. Thoughts?

Animal Cruelty in the Name of Art!

In the 2007, the 'artist' Guillermo Vargas Habacuc, took a dog from the street, he tied him to a rope in an art gallery, starving him to death. For several days, the 'artist' and the visitors of the exhibition have watched emotionless the shameful 'masterpiece' based on the dog's agony, until eventually he died. But this is not all, the prestigious Visual Arts Biennial of the Central American decided that the 'installation' was actually art, so that Guillermo Vargas Habacuc has been invited to repeat his cruel action for the biennial of 2008.

Centers Tap Into Personal Databases

Intelligence centers run by states across the country have access to personal information about millions of Americans, including unlisted cellphone numbers, insurance claims, driver's license photographs and credit reports, according to a document obtained by The Washington Post.

One center also has access to top-secret data systems at the CIA, the document shows, though it's not clear what information those systems contain.

Dozens of the organizations known as fusion centers were created after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to identify potential threats and improve the way information is shared. The centers use law enforcement analysts and sophisticated computer systems to compile, or fuse, disparate tips and clues and pass along the refined information to other agencies. They are expected to play important roles in national information-sharing networks that link local, state and federal authorities and enable them to automatically sift their storehouses of records for patterns and clues.

Though officials have publicly discussed the fusion centers' importance to national security, they have generally declined to elaborate on the centers' activities. But a document that lists resources used by the fusion centers shows how a dozen of the organizations in the northeastern United States rely far more on access to commercial and government databases than had previously been disclosed.

Church Of Scientology Trying To Block Protesters

By STEPHEN THOMPSON of The Tampa Tribune

Published: March 12, 2008

CLEARWATER -- The Church of Scientology has made the rare move in court of trying to stop protesters from returning to its headquarters starting Thursday, even though that would mean the protesters couldn't be on public sidewalks.

In a petition filed Tuesday, the church claims the group Anonymous wants to do harm to the church and its leaders – in particular the Rev. Heber Jentzsch, the president of the Church of Scientology International – and says the group has tried to harm the church in the past.

The church's move in court comes a month after about 180 members of Anonymous gathered outside Scientology's headquarters Feb. 10 and conducted a peaceful protest. Members of the group vowed to return.

In court lingo, the church is asking for an injunction for protection against repeat violence, which is more typically filed by women who say they are getting beaten by their husband or boyfriend. A Pinellas-Pasco circuit judge denied Scientology's motion today, but said the church could file another one if it liked.

The church did so within hours. A copy was not available for public view.

In the 21-page petition filed Tuesday, which is accompanied by dozens of exhibits, including a DVD, the church says members of Anonymous have threatened to commit acts of violence on the church and its members tomorrow, which is the birthday of church founder L. Ron Hubbard.

"Parishioners, officials, and leaders come to Clearwater and gather in large numbers at numerous events and services for this purpose," the petition states. "It is at this event that Anonymous has declared that it is their plan to assassinate or execute the Rev. Heber Jentzsch."

The celebration is expected to continue Friday and Saturday.

To support its request that protesters be kept 500 feet from Scientology buildings and Jentzsch, the church notes that Anonymous has posted detailed plans online for its protest on Saturday, which includes breaking its members up into "red, yellow and blue teams," maps of Scientology buildings and roads, and instructions that protesters use sunglasses, bandanas, hats and scarves to cover their faces, rather than masks.

Kentucky Lawmaker Wants to Make Anonymous Internet Posting Illegal

Wednesday, Mar 05, 2008 - 11:11 PM Updated: 12:40 PM

Kentucky Representative Tim Couch filed a bill this week to make anonymous posting online illegal.

The bill would require anyone who contributes to a website to register their real name, address and e-mail address with that site.

Their full name would be used anytime a comment is posted.

If the bill becomes law, the website operator would have to pay if someone was allowed to post anonymously on their site. The fine would be five-hundred dollars for a first offense and one-thousand dollars for each offense after that.

Representative Couch says he filed the bill in hopes of cutting down on online bullying. He says that has especially been a problem in his Eastern Kentucky district.

Action News 36 asked people what they thought about the bill.

Some said they felt it was a violation of First Amendment rights. Others say it is a good tool toward eliminating online harassment.

Represntative Couch says enforcing this bill if it became law would be a challenge.
