Beer, Beef and Politics

Beer, beef and politics: Findings at viking archaeological site show power trumping practicality
December 3, 2014, Baylor University

Summary:

Vikings are known for raiding and trading, but those who settled in Iceland centuries ago spent more time producing and feasting on booze and beef — in part to gain political clout in a place very different from their homeland, says an archaeologist.

Greetings An Tir!

The An Tir Webminister interviews are concluded and of the four strong candidates we have confirmation from our Seneschal and Crown that our choice is acceptable.

At the end of my warrant, October 31st, UlfR Blodfotur Fallgrson, will step up into the office of Kingdom Webminister. He will be part of the WebTeam from now until the end of my warrant.

I know that you will welcome him and help him usher our website into the next generation as you have me and my team. :)

Jess Blade-maker has passed on...

As many of you know, Jess Roe has been losing the battle with cancer all winter. Here is the amazing tribute that Wolfe MacLeod wrote for him on December 26 - Losing my best friend, my Mentor - when Jess was not expected to live another two days.

Jess being Jess, he lived another two months and two days. Here is Wolfe's post of February 28: Great disturbance in The Force - we lost Jess Roe last night.

I would say "Rest well, dear old friend", but I don't think 'rest' would be much to his taste - he'll be quaffing the good stuff in Valhalla with Mischka, Carl Redstone and a bevy of buxom Valkyries.

"There from the flowing bowl
Deep drinks the warrior's soul;
Skoal! to the Northland! Skoal!"
Thus the tale ended.

Update on Master James the Obscure

Master James had his heart surgery (aortal valve replacement) on the morning of the 16th, and everything went fine. I talked to him on the phone today; he's sitting up, eating real food, and sounding cheery and coherent, though a bit hoarse from the respirator and sleepy from the pain meds. He says he is not having too much pain, and the nurses are being very good to him. ;-D

We expect him home from the hospital on Jan. 28, and it looks like he will probably be fit to go to Kingdom A&S in March. Many thanks to all his friends for their good wishes!

September Crown 2012

.....Greetings,

.....September Crown is a little less than five weeks away. The Barony of Dragon's Laire, Team Haggis, and the Western Region of An Tir bid you welcome to a fearsome Tournament where the next King and Queen of An Tir will be chosen in combat. September Crown is also the occasion of the Kingdom Equestrian Championship, certainly a thrilling site to behold. In addition there will be Arts and Sciences activities, Family Activities, Archery, and many other things to enjoy on a three day weekend in late summer. This grand presentation will be taking place starting August 31st and running through September 3rd.

.....As Chairman and Event Steward for September Crown, 2012, I wanted to send some miscellaneous information your way so as to help in your planning efforts.

.....Their Majesties have given Their first approval of a tentative schedule of events happening at September Crown. This schedule will be posted shortly at our two informational web-site locations for the advertising of September Crown. The first is at the An Tir Kingdom Calendar where information will be updated on a regular basis. It is located here: <http://www.antir.sca.org/upcoming/?event_id=2496>.

.....The September Crown main web-site area can be found here: <http://www.dragonslaire.org/events/sept_crown.php>. This is where the majority of information on the event can be found at any given time. We're just now plugging in all the information gathered recently, so please give our hard working web-ministers a few days to update everything.

.....The schedule will be posted in these two locations within the next few days. An updated listing of the Points-Of-Contact for Team Haggis will also be available in one or both of these locations shortly (such as the MIC, RV reservations, etc.). Please check back often for details.

.....Pre-Registration through ACCEPS is still ongoing for September Crown, through August 9th. You can reach ACCEPS through this link: <http://acceps.ansteorra.org/index.php>.

.....Reservations for space on the September Crown site will only be done at this time for those who have pre-registered for September Crown. Once you have completed the ACCEPS process, please send an e-mail to THL Elisabeth Trostin at <campingindl@gmail.com>. She will be accepting reservations through August 16th.

.....For those who want to beat the rush and volunteer of their time, it would be sincerely appreciated! Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, M'Lord Emil at <4baddog@gmail.com>.

.....Some notes on the site. This is a brand new site for the Barony of Dragon's Laire. A site that has never been used for an SCA event. There are sure to be some surprises when 1,000 plus people descend on it for the weekend. We ask that you bring your patience as we oil our processes for this new site.

.....The site is a former trailer park, called the 'Old Norseland Site'. It is on the edge of the city limits of Bremerton, WA. As such, it has changed zip code designations several times and so is sometimes difficult for programs such as Mapquest and Google Maps to locate. If you go this route, program 'Bremerton National Airport' into these programs or your GPS as the best way to find the site. When you arrive at the Airport, you'll be greeted by the one Traffic Light in the area. Make the turn opposite the airport and you've reached the entrance to the site. We'll make sure to have signs very visible.

.....The site itself is primitive and will be challenging to those who have mobility issues. Please come prepared! The site is built on a series on three terraced sections with a 20 degree sloped hillside between each section. Each terraced section is flat and even, but going from one level to another will require some effort.

.....We look forward to seeing you in the Mighty Barony of Dragon's Laire. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should happen to have any questions.

.....Many Thanks, Arontius of Bygelswade.

Drachenwald seeking help

Next June, our midsummer coronation will also be a celebration of the twentieth anniversary of Drachenwald becoming a Kingdom.  Naturally, this will be a big event and we would like to get in touch with as many former Drachenwalders, especially former crowns and coronets.

As such, we have a missive from the Crown, which we would like distributed as widely as possible.  It has already been sent to Kingdom Chroniclers, but we would also like it put out via Kingdom mailing lists and, if at all possible, linked on Kingdom websites.

I'm not sure if attachments work on this list, so instead, if you are able to publish the missive, or link to the site, please contact me for details.
