I'm not a great one for thinking about who people are and what they (we) do in terms of Roles, but many people do. I found myself thinking about this metaphor a couple of weeks ago.

The role you have can have-- and how to play it-- depend in part on the size of your stage. If you think your stage (or your role) is larger than it is, you risk becoming a strutting pomposity. Or if you think your stage is enormous and your part is small, you risk undue shrinking into invisibility.

One of the risks of playing a role, it seems to me, is the risk of being swallowed by one's part, like the wretched man who seemed like a dwarf on the leash of a Tragedian, in The Great Divorce.

I'll stop here for now. Sheeyun wants to finish watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and I suspect that I sound like Mary Bennet, whose moral reflections were notable for their Solidity.
