I also copied to my senators and legislator.
Dear Mr. President:
I was extremely dismayed to see your communications director saying that your "goal in responding Dobbs is not to satisfy some activists who have been consistently out of step with the mainstream of the Democratic Party."
You are discounting the substantial majority of Democrats and also of Republicans and certainly of women and people of color. You make it very clear that when you say "mainstream" you're thinking "White cis-men." If your actions were merely geared at winning the support-and-votes game, it's a very poor idea.
But I call on you not to fall for the framing of policy as a tool for the votes game. I call on you to care about the actual, physical results of policy today and for the future. I call on you to act-- you have the power to act and the power to use your presidential pulpit-- to defend the rights that the GOP is succeeding in rolling back and erasing.
The GOP and far right have not been deterred by momentary failure, by lawsuits, or by polls, let alone by *possible* lawsuits. Their reach has always exceed their grasp, and that is why their grasp now encompasses so much. Including but not limited to the gonads of impregnable people.
Fight for us, Mr. President. For your most vulnerable and most consistent supporters. Use Executive Orders and use your voice. Unpack the Supreme Court by appointing at least four more judges to it. Unite the Senate behind elimination of the filibuster or making it talking-only. Stop appeasing Mitch McConnell by nominating yet another anti-abortion judge.
Work for justice, not for polls or the New York Times's centrist and righter-wing columnists.
We demand it.
Sincerely,
The Rev. Mary Ann Dimand
