Today I managed to get pre-trip* preparation done fast enough that I could go to Wednesday noon worship at St. James. I am finding the current political times very trying, and a service with the eucharist reassures me of a sense of decent order in the universe, and of community in at least ideal form. In fact, St. James is such a crazy good church that the sense of community is always always viscerally restorative, too.
It's even better than watching beautiful hockey practice.
The Wednesday service is a healing service. I don't normally come in asking for prayers for myself or for others, though I enjoy the community prayer for others. And today I went purely selfishly. But during the healing circle portion I realized I should go forward for prayer for our Hmong congregation members, and for Hmong and Lao community across the United States and the world. And for the US to heal. Because ICE has announced a special initiative to deport undocumented Hmong and Lao US residents. When I started, I said I didn't know who might know about this, and then described the policy. The group of fifteen gasped.
It's a good church.
I don't expect everyone to be a big old leftie like me, but it's nice that they gasped.
* We're in Phoenix for a hockey tournament.
