A long, long time ago, before the earth had cooled (or something) I used to write personal posts on my LJ. Now is as good a time as any to start up again, since I had a very nice birthday weekend.

While I'm still working on the next issue of Wild Violet, I took a break this morning to take some birthday self-portraits, a tradition now for about seven years or so. Like last year, I had to take some with my little Kung Fu Panda, as well.

My Kung Fu Panda is sucking down a mid-morning bottle before we hop in the car and meet a friend for lunch. This morning he played in the YMCA Child Watch while I worked out, and then we attended a concert at the library where he learned about jug band instruments. His verdict: shakers (maracas) are fun... and delicious!

If you didn't already know, we held a party Saturday at my Dad's place to celebrate our Kung Fu Panda's first birthday. Here's the day, in pictures.

After KFP awoke from his nap yesterday, we managed to open presents and eat cake before the guests had to leave. He was still sort of sleepy and dazed, but at least he wasn't crying and flinging cake!

While he was interested in being sung to (my little guy loves music), and in poking the baby-friendly Apple Swirl cake Mom made, he wasn't so keen on tasting it. I slipped a piece in his mouth when he opened it, and his eyes got really wide. We got a couple pics but none of the "baby smashing birthday cake" pics everyone I told about the party seemed to expect. We did, however, get some great portraits at a local park this morning just before a brief  rainstorm.  As any photographer will tell you, overcast days are great for photos.

He got lots of books for his birthday, plus a big green ball that coincidentally made a great prop. He is currently dismantling a birthday hat which yesterday he refused to wear.

If his personality now is an indication of what he'll be as he grows up, he will be a music-loving, curious, outgoing, active mover and shaker. Shake that groove thing, KFP! I'll dance along.

Moral:
Babies don't really get first birthdays.

I've just downloaded the LJ app for my Droid phone. We'll see if it's better than the mobile version of the site, which was great for reading my FL but wouldn't let me post comments.

We are celebrating KFP's 1st birthday with family, but he got tired and cranky, so I'm in the bedroom while he takes a nap. There's no point forcing cake on an unhappy baby. Hopefully, once he's rested, he'll be more interested in cake and presents. I'd like his first birthday party to be fun for him!
