Olivia stood silently half a step behind Casey, her hand resting on the small of her back. They had been coming here every year on the same day. It wasn’t the day Casey’s father had died. That seemed too morbid. It was his birthday. Every year they went back to the ocean where he spent his last few months, where his ashes had been scattered.
They had arrived a little before lunch time and had lunch at his favourite restaurant, then made their way down to the water. It was always a reflective time for Casey, and Olivia respected that. Today was different to every other year though. Today Casey had some news for her father. They found a deserted area and Olivia sat down on a rock, Casey sitting between her legs and leaning back in to her as she spoke softly to her father.
”Hi daddy,” she smiled to herself. Ever since he died, she had reverted to using childish names for him. “Happy birthday,” she added sadly. “I wanted to tell you something this year daddy. Something I haven’t told anyone yet. I was waiting until your birthday, until I could tell you.” She absently stroked Olivia’s hand that was resting on her stomach. “The thing is…you’re going to be a grandfather.” Her voice broke, and Olivia’s arms tightened around her waist. “We’re having a baby, me and Liv. And before you say anything – I know – we both work too hard. That’s all going to change, I promise.” She felt Olivia chuckle behind her and she squeezed her hand. “I’m four months along. Mom is going to kill me when she finds out how long I’ve been hiding it. But I wanted to tell you first. I always was your girl,” she added with a bittersweet smile.
“I wish you were here, daddy. I want you waiting in the hospital to meet your grandchild. I want them to sit on your knee as you tell them the same stories you used to tell me, and having midnight snacks and ice cream – even if it’s only 10pm – and promising not to tell anyone else because it’s your special time.” She had a smile on her face, even though silent tears were forging a path down her cheeks. “I’ve still got those crystals you left me when you convinced me Santa had visited. I’m going to do the same thing. And we’ll talk about you dad. All the time. I want them to know you, even if you can never meet. We’ve got so many plans for them. I want to show them the world, just like you did for me. We bought a bookcase last week and it’s already half full of books you read to me when I was little. We’re moving, too. Getting out of the city. We want them to grow up with a yard to play in, maybe a swing set. We’ll commute in for the moment, but maybe one day we’ll end up working somewhere closer to home.”
She squeezed Olivia’s hand again and turned to look at her, finding her lovers dark eyes wet with unshed tears. “Liv wants to ask you something, but she said she feels silly talking to the ocean.” Olivia blushed and ducked her head. “She wants to know if we can name it after you; Michael for a boy or Michaela if it’s a girl.” Fresh tears fell as she remembered when Olivia had mentioned it – she had fallen in love with her a little more in that moment. “I told her I was sure you’d be honoured.”
She rest her head back on to Olivia’s shoulder and sighed. “I miss you, daddy. I know I always told you I hated it, but I miss you calling me ‘Red’. I miss your big warm arms wrapping around me when I come home, and I miss the smell of steaks marinated in your secret sauce cooking on the barbeque.” She wiped at her tears then smiled wide. “I’m going to have a baby, dad. Can you believe it? Your little girl is going to have a little girl or boy of her own.” She turned and kissed Olivia lightly. “And I’m having it with the most amazing woman in the world.” She held Olivia’s eyes and smiled softly. “I’m so glad you got to know him, baby. He loved you, I know he did.” She kissed her again then went to stand. “Next year we’ll bring them out to meet you,” she promised. She held a hand out to Olivia and helped her up off the rock. “Wish me luck. I’m off to tell mom. I doubt I’ll be able to hear for the next few days after she squeals my ears off.” She chuckled and squeezed Olivia’s hand. “I love you, daddy. Hope you’re giving them hell, wherever you are.”
Olivia smiled and kissed her lovers knuckles. “Of course he is, Case. He wouldn’t have it any other way.”
Casey wrapped her arms around Olivia’s neck and rest her forehead against the brunette’s. “You’re right. He wouldn’t.” She held her tight, both women with a hand on the slightly swollen stomach as they looked out over the crashing waves. “Let’s go,” she whispered, and Olivia nodded, leading her back to the car and on to her mother's house.
