"You are my only girl,
But you're not my owner, girl
You are my only girl,
But you're not my owner."

These are some big-name Canadian Rockers. Well, as of the mid-200s, sure. Now? I have no clue. I don't know if Hot Hot Heat is still together or not. That's pretty much me and most of my music collection - totally out of it.
But they are apart of the sizable 'dance rock' collection in my library. But I think now the term for 'dance rock' is 'disco'? I don't know but I would love it if clubs/dance lounges would play this kinda dance music.

"Heart on my sleeve
Not where it should be
The song's out of key again"

I really love the scratchy, muddled vocals of Feist. And she's total Starbucks music, if you like that kinda soft jazzy, indie, popable stuff. If you prefer more of a Bossa Nova sound, check out her first album, Let It Die. There's a cover of the Bee Gees on there that I absolutely love.

"I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles in our eyes
Are mirror images and when we kiss they are perfectly aligned"

Finally. POSTAL SERVICE.
Y'all need to know these guys are an absolute treat. This, THIS is a beautiful example of electronica and synths. There's only one album, Give Up so far, but boy oh boy it is amazing. Oh, and Ben Gibbard writes/provides vocals, so they are beautiful themselves. :D

Anyway, I waited to share Postal Service because this is the first week of real, wintery, dry, dusty snow. And I love it. Everytime it snows like this it drifts in 2-3 inches a day and everything is white - even the sky. And at night everything is an orange haze becuase the clouds are so low and reflective you get an endless glow of orange light posts. It's gorgeous.

"Let's build and evil genius
And keep warm tonight"

Words cannot describe how much I love Nirmala's vocals. But in addition to her subtle, sultry voice the lyrics are ridiculous. I don't really pay that much attention to lyrics, but pretty much EVERY Controller.Controller song has a couplet or two of just plain kooky lyrics that are memorable. Some of my favourites are "I heard you liked parallels/How 'bout the 49th?"

Anyway, I thought "PF" would be fun because it sounds like something Talia would say to win over Bruce. Or something like that.

Sadly, however, the band is defunct and split up. Which kinda clears my conscience to give you all this EP and this LP. But shhhhhh. I'm not really supposed to do this.

"We were hoping for some romance
All we found was more despair
We must talk about our problems
We are in a state of flux"

I like Bloc Party. Every album sounds different because each band member takes turns 'controlling' the album, but Kele's vocals remain thick, heavy, and never lose impact. The first one,Silent Alarm, is very aggressive, fast and loose. A Weekend In The City is a little softer, slower, overall more indie, while finally Intimacy is more electronic and danceable.
It's hard to choose one song to showcases them because, as I just mentioned, each album sounds different. But, I chose "Flux" because the music video is ridiculous amounts of fun. YouTube it, you won't regret it.

"It breaks if you don't force it
It breaks when you don't try"

When Sonic (Edmonton's version of The Edge) started radio play they had a great selection of music. Afterall, they were filling the indie rock niche for universitiy kids. It was this time I discovered a lot of new bands, and a lot of songs just stuck and resonated with me. I think it was more the synthed up guitar and keytar beats more than anything else, but after years of Women & Song this was mind blowing.

Editors is one of those groups. They probably have more albums, more singles, but I will always remember them for "Munich".

Watching evening creep back slowly back before the dawn
Lays me out and leaves me wondering where the time has gone

Truth be told I don't really listen to King Cobb Steelie. I just heard this track in high school and instantly feel in love with the drumming and backing vocals. Which is pretty weird because I'm pretty diligent about getting entire albums and listening to them. I treat albums like books: they're meant to be enjoyed as a whole.
I guess I'll try it again now that I've remembered them.

"I wrote your name
Upon the back of my hand
Slept upon it then I woke up
With it backwards on my face
Reading forwards
From the mirror to my heart."

I get giddy and tinglies in my toes whenever I hear their stuff. I guess I like them like any mod girl in the sixties liked the Beatles.

Anyway, "Twilight Omens" is one of my favourite songs because of the lyrics. It's got a 'Ben Gibbard' stalkerish quality to it that is so admiring and endearing you just can't be creeped out by it. This, however, is quite uncharacteristic of them. They have sultry lyrics, discordant goodbye lyrics, and some straight up dance jams.

I just uploaded, kinda embedded (there's a bug or two) nine songs on my blog for the "30 Days of Awesome" thing, so forgive me I'm just gonna link you there for today.

HERE. NINE SONGS. 3 ARCADE FIRE, 2 BEIRUT, 1 FLORENCE + THE MACHINE, 3 ADAM WARROCK TRACKLOGS (meaning it's free from his blog anyways so nyah.

"It's the same old theme since nineteen-sixteen
In your head, in your head they're still fighting"

In honour of Remembrance Day I picked "Zombie." I'm pretty sure it's the only WWI song (or any war song period) in my library.

“Not everything in this magical world is quite what it seems”

Since I’m exploring some older tastes (i.e. my junior high jams) I thought I’d be fun to have some older Nelly Furtado. I love just how 90s this sounds.

“I finally found you
My missing puzzle piece
I’m complete

Let’s go all the way tonight
No regrets just love
We can dance until we die”

GUYS I THINK I’VE BEEN BIT BY GLEE FEVER. AND I REALLY LIKE THIS A CAPPELLA VERSION OF "TEENAGE DREAM". And, um, unlike EVERY OTHER Darren Criss fan out there I knew him from Eastwick.

Either way I saved this for Glee night.

"Take these arms that were made for loving
And this heart that will beat for two"

Hands down, Fever is my favourite pop album. Most people (especially us on this side of the pond) know her better for "Love At First Sight," but "Come Into My World" is probably my favourite song off the album. What's even more fun was the Fever Tour had a futurist space-robot theme to it.

BASICALLY I LOVE KYLIE AND SHE IS MY POP GODDESS.

"Here we are now going to the south side
I pick up my friends and we hope we won't die"

Moby was my Junior High Jam as Arcade Fire was for High School. This was when I discovered electronica (really any music that was NOT alternative was a blessing to me then) and Moby was so captivating. He was really diverse musically, but was constant in one regard: His music always moved me to the core. There's just this connection that I get with his music that amplifies and resonates itself emotionally in me. It's so calming yet so powerful.
It was pretty difficult to choose one Moby song to share, but "South Side" edges out because it features vocals from Gwen Stephanie. I've adored her music since No Doubt and this collaboration always reminds me of them in the late 90s-early 00s and I love it.

A beautiful, intense track off the Mushishi OST.
I originally heard it here, (my love for Mononoke AMVs is uncanny, really). Mushishi is an anime about supernatural creatures connected to life itself. I haven't seen the anime or read the manga, but damn, this music is delightful. I get a very pure, elemental feel that expresses the stillness and magnitude of discovering a forest.

I released and started the 30 Days of Awesome Challenge on Tumblr today and am continuing the 30 Days of Song. So I picked something to get pumped and ready: "Up & Adam" by Adam WarRock. (Buy/Listen to his album here!)

"Don't you love the way music fills your soul

Today's song is totally "Our Hell" by Emily Haines & the Soft Skeletons because I think I just sold my soul to an oil & gas company (I elaborate on it more in my LJ).

"There's a pattern in the system
There's a bullet in the gun
That's why I tried to save you
But it can't be done
It can't be done"

A short week last week (only 3-1/2 days), so the music is sparse. And the fact I've been hypnotized by Florence and the Machine's "Howl" and "Cosmic Love." I haven't even heard the whole album, I just have those two on repeat!

Yeah, there's been a little Franz Ferdinand action and a brief interlude of Imogen Heap ("Aha").

And yes, I am posting this from memory at home, so expect there to be more edits and updates on this post later in the week.

... So far, it's just been more Florence + the Machine. I added "Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)" and "Hardest of Hearts" to the mix.

There was a half-day interlude of Ting Tings, however.

... Wow. A Brit-heavy stretch, eh?

This is the penultimate update of stuff I'm listening at work. Next week will still be on Monday, but I'll add an edit with all the stuff from Tuesday to Thursday.

I listen to music as much as I can, but easily forget who or what I've been listening to. Here, I keep tabs on what I've been listening to, what I like, and maybe a commentary or two.

I would use Last.fm, but I usually end up pulling songs off 8tracks, YouTube, and my personal collection.

This is a side-project/blog, by the way. The main one is [livejournal.com profile] akoyamiazaki
