Open access policy

The Journal of International Advanced Otology is a fully open access, online-only journal. Articles are freely available to read, download, and reuse, subject to the terms of the license applied at publication.

The journal's understanding of open access follows the Berlin Declaration. Users are granted free, irrevocable, and worldwide rights of access, copying, distribution, and adaptation, subject to proper attribution and any further conditions imposed by the license under which the article has been released.

No period of delayed open access or embargo applies: all articles are open access immediately on publication.

Copyright policy

Authors retain copyright in their published work. On acceptance, authors grant the Societies a non-exclusive license to publish, distribute, and archive the article, and they grant readers the reuse rights specified by the article's license. The Societies in turn authorize Caleo, as their publishing services provider, to host and distribute the article on their behalf. Authors confirm these terms by completing the journal's Copyright and Authorship Agreement (https://www.advancedotology.org/index.php/pub/libraryFiles/downloadPublic/1).

For any material not originally created by the authors, including figures, tables, extended quotations, and datasets, authors are responsible for securing written permission from the rights holder before publication and for providing attribution in the form the rights holder requires.

Licensing policy

Articles are published under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license. Under this license, others may reuse, distribute, and adapt the work, including for commercial purposes, provided the original work is properly attributed.

The journal supports rights-retention strategies, including those required under Plan S; the CC BY 4.0 license applied to all articles is compliant with Plan S. Authors funded by cOAlition S members may attach a prior-obligation rights-retention statement to the submitted manuscript.

Publication fee policy

As of March 14, 2026, the Journal of International Advanced Otology charges an Article Processing Charge (APC) for each accepted article, based on article type. Articles submitted before this date are not charged an APC.

• Original Articles, Reviews, and Systematic Review / Meta-analysis: €1,600 + 3% transaction fee (VAT may be added where applicable)
• Case Reports, Case Based Reviews, Short Reports, and Video Reports: €1,200 + 3% transaction fee (VAT may be added where applicable)
• Letters to the Editor are exempt from APCs

APCs are charged only after the manuscript has been accepted. Submission is free. The journal levies no page charges, color figure charges, or charges for supplementary material unless stated otherwise.

Preprint policy

The Journal of International Advanced Otology welcomes submissions previously posted to a recognized preprint server. Authors must disclose any preprint posting in the cover letter and include the preprint's DOI in the manuscript.

Acceptable preprint servers are those that clearly designate content as non-peer-reviewed, require disclosure of conflicts of interest and funding, provide mechanisms for raising concerns, retain withdrawal notices, and allow linking to subsequent peer-reviewed versions.

After acceptance, authors should update the preprint record to link to the Version of Record. Authors should not replace the preprint with the accepted manuscript or the Version of Record.

When citing preprints, authors must identify them as such and include the DOI. Where a peer-reviewed version exists, it should be cited in preference to the preprint.

Self-archiving and green open access

Because the journal is fully open access, the Version of Record is freely available immediately on publication and may be shared and deposited under the terms of the article's Creative Commons license. In addition, authors may deposit the following versions of their article in institutional or subject repositories:

• The submitted version (preprint): may be deposited at any time, subject to the terms of the preprint server.
• The accepted manuscript (author accepted manuscript): may be deposited immediately on acceptance, with no embargo. Authors should apply the article's Creative Commons license and include a link to the Version of Record.
• The Version of Record (the published article): may be deposited immediately, with attribution and a link to the published article, in accordance with the article's license.

Authors retain the right to comply with funder mandates, including the rights-retention strategies operated under Plan S, and with their institutions' open access policies.

Embargo and media policy

Authors may share the accepted manuscript with their institutional press office to help coordinate media communication. Press coverage and promotion through social media should not precede the journal's publication date without prior agreement.

The journal does not operate a press embargo for routine articles. Discussion of findings with colleagues, at scientific meetings, or on preprint servers does not count as a breach of this policy.

Third-party content and permissions

Authors must obtain written permission to reproduce any material, whether text, figures, tables, or data, from copyrighted sources, unless the use is clearly covered by a fair dealing, fair use, or equivalent exception, or the source has been published under a license that permits reuse. Permissions must be documented and provided to the journal on request.

Reuse of content previously published under a Creative Commons license must comply with the terms of the original license. Attribution must include author, title, source, and the original license.
