The name of Shamoon Hameed, nephew of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, has been forwarded to Parliament for appointment to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
The terms of several current members of the commission are set to expire on October 3.
Following a public call for applications to fill the upcoming vacancies, the President has nominated Shamoon Hameed and Samaau Ahmed Najeeb, an incumbent member of the commission, as his preferred candidates for the roles.
Shamoon previously served as the Secretary General of the HRCM, having been appointed to the post in February 2012. However, he was removed from the position in November 2016 following amendments made to the commission’s internal regulations.
At the time, Shamoon filed a lawsuit in the Civil Court contending that his dismissal was unlawful. However, the court ruled that there were no legal violations in the process of his removal from the post of Secretary General.
In addition to his tenure at the HRCM, Shamoon has held several high-level positions in various state institutions. These include serving as the Director General of the National Center for the Arts (NCA), a Director at Voice of Maldives, and a Music Supervisor at the Ministry of Education.
During the previous administration, he served as the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Heritage. Shamoon Hameed holds higher education qualifications in the field of music composition.
