Health Minister Geela Ali has revealed that 60 percent of doctors working in the Maldives are expatriates.
Responding to a question from a lawmaker during today’s Parliament sitting, Geela noted that efforts are currently underway to increase the number of Maldivians working in the healthcare sector.
"We hope that healthcare will become a service provided by a larger number of Maldivians, and training programs are being conducted at the Maldives National University to achieve this," she said.
The minister expressed her hope that more Maldivians would enroll in healthcare courses, leading to an increase in the local workforce within the sector.
According to Geela, there are more than 12,000 employees working in the healthcare sector across the country, of which over 3,000 are expatriates.
She further detailed that of these 12,000 employees, approximately 7,000 are stationed in the atolls, while the remaining 5,000 work within the Greater Male' area.
