Our History
Established in 1988 by founders Dr. Lawrence & Barbara Stein, the company was in a converted Kendall movie theatre for its first seven years. In the early 1990s, Actors’ Playhouse entered a partnership with the City of Coral Gables to renovate the historic Miracle Theatre, transforming the splendid Art Deco movie house into the company’s new home in a 10 million dollar capital renovation funded and implemented by Actors’ Playhouse. The role model partnership between the city and the theatre saved the historic site from being sold to big box retail and served as a catalyst to redevelop the downtown district of the City of Coral Gables, now flourishing with over 100 signature restaurants, retail, residential, a museum, art cinematheque, and 150 multinationals. The renovation of the Miracle Theatre was made possible with support from the State of Florida, Miami-Dade County, and many generous corporate and private donors. The historic landmark hosts a 600-seat, a 300-seat, and a 100-seat spaces. The theatre is available for rent by private, cultural, and corporate organizations.
Actors’ Playhouse is an acclaimed producer of 200 Mainstage productions including Broadway and Off-Broadway musicals, mystery/thrillers, comedies, and new works, and 200 professional Children’s Theatre productions. Its youth programming is tantamount to its mission hosting an annual Theatre Conservatory, the Young Talent Big Dreams countywide youth talent contest, the Musical Miracles Musical Theatre Youth Performance Troupe, and educational outreach to the community. The Executive team of Producing Director Barbara S. Stein, Artistic Director David Arisco, and Children’s Director Earl Maulding, have served together since the theatre’s inception, each being highly recognized for their steadfast dedication and effort in the performing arts.
