"This is Dean. I'm not here right now, leave a message." Pushing the END button on her Blackberry, Anna resisted the urge to toss the phone into the Hudson. This was the tenth time this week that all three phones - Dean's, Sam's, and Bobby's - had gone straight to voicemail everytime she called. Red wasn't responding to her calls and Castiel was nowhere to be found (not that he ever showed up when she called anyway).
Something wasn't right - no, something was extremely wrong here. Red wasn't one to abandon her, and Bobby would've picked up the phone by now. Last she'd heard from her own sources, there was one seal left before all Hell would literally break loose. The endless weeks of not knowing what was going on and if her boys were even alive were killing her. She just couldn't shake this consuming feeling that Lucifer was free and the angels had something to do with Anna Milton's abrupt disappearance. She needed answers and she needed them now.
"Hey! I know you can hear me up there! Red! Castiel! God damnit, answer me! Somebody, please!" Had it been her screaming at the sky anywhere but the bank of the Hudson River, she'd have been fitted for a straight jacket immediately. She was answered with silence - aside from the usual sounds of Manhattan evening traffic. A few more tries - even adopting a more polite approach once - with no results. After half an hour of yelling and swearing and enough blasphemy to make an atheist blush, she fell to her knees.
The moment she looked down at the ground, the tears she'd been holding back all this time burst from her eyes. "Please... please just tell me they're alive. Please, God..."
A brilliant white flash lit up the Manhattan skyline, sending the waters of the Hudson into a panicked frenzy while leaves whipped and funneled around Anna. The winds sang a soothing, gentle chorus that died down when Anna opened her eyes. As the light faded she thought she saw the shadow of a six-winged figure but the person before her was what caught her off-guard. "...Jane?"
"Hello, Anna. I'm terribly sorry that it's taken me this long to contact you, but I have had to take care of certain... issues... from up there." The blonde woman with a British accent and striking blue eyes tilted her head toward the sky as Anna got to her feet.
This wasn't the cheery lab tech she used to work with before her transfer to the Crime Lab. "What've you done with Jane Parsons?" Reaching for her holster, she swiftly drew her gun and removed the safety while pointing it at the woman.
Jane canted her head and smiled. "Dean did the same to Castiel, save the fact that he actually shot my dear brother. I am afraid that pointing a gun at me will accomplish nothing. As for your question - Jane has offered herself to God as a vessel for one of Her holy children. My name is Zerachiel. I am an angel of the Lord."
Holstering her gun slowly, Anna kept her eyes locked onto the woman cautiously. "Another lackey for the Holy Crusade? I think you guys need a better slogan."
Zerachiel's brow arched in slight offense. "On the contrary, I'm what you would call... senior management."
Anna stiffened, looking astonished and slightly embarassed as she gaped at the angel. "You're..."
Stepping closer, Zerachiel nodded. "One of the archangels, yes. Your mother's faith venerates my brothers Gabriel, Raphael, and Michael. You should recognize those names."
"Why are you here? Shouldn't you be with Dean and Sam, or Chuck?"
Zerachiel shook her head, gently wiping the last of Anna's tears from her eyes. "I am here for you. My brother Gabriel is with your boys as we speak. And before you ask me the dozens of questions I know you have, let me try to answer a few first."
Anna nodded silently, shifting and trying her best to just be patient.
"Dean and Sam are alive and being taken someplace safe. Castiel is on the run from the garrison after defying Zachariah's orders, which were to keep Dean locked up while Sam kills Lilith, thus breaking the final seal." Pausing, she made sure Anna was still with her before continuing. "Dean was too late, and when Lilith's blood was spilled the final seal had been broken and Lucifer has risen. Gabriel and I are working on figuring out who has been giving the orders to encourage the Apocalypse in Her place. I'm here for you, Anna, because God has a plan for you. She's asked me to keep an eye on you for a while."
"Dean got Castiel and he's your supposed savior, and I have no major part in stopping Lucifer from taking over, but I get an archangel watching my back? Is God on LSD?"
Fighting back a frown, Zerachiel shook her head in disdain. "I am God's command, Anna. I do not question Her orders."
Shifting her weight, Anna shrunk back apologetically. "Sorry... Is- is Dean okay?" Looking down, she tried to keep her voice from breaking. "It's been weeks..."
The angel placed a comforting hand on Anna's shoulder, smiling sadly. She'd been watching them since Uriel's betrayal, and she knew how deeply this human woman loved Dean. Her creator was a bit more rational about it, but She found the love to be precious and beautiful. "Dean and Sam are alright, they are not injured. Dean... has missed you, but lately he has been distracted by the war. He is physically alright, but otherwise I cannot say."
"If Lucifer is free then... where are the boys?"
Zerachiel tapped Anna's forehead, flashing the image of a familiar South Dakota address where Gabriel left the brothers.
"...Bobby's." Digging through her pockets, she fished out her keys and grinned at the angel. "You're better than MapQuest." Pausing, a look of terror crossed her face as she remembered that this was going to become war on Earth.
"Anna, your family will be well-protected, so do not worry. But you need to focus on protecting yourself. Trust that Dean will return to you when he is ready."
"Thanks, Zera--" Anna cut herself off, looking confused for a moment until she realized the angel had vanished. "She's worse than Cas." Walking back to her sedan, she popped the trunk and scanned over the contents - knives, guns, rock salt, holy water - grinning in satisfaction as she slammed it shut.
"Sorry, but I'm through sitting around and waiting."
