I’ve written amnesia fic before! Forget-Me-Not, (PK Subban/Carey Price)

And the fic I wrote for Yuletide this year: Memories of Unreal Things (William Laurence/Tenzing Tharkay, Temeraire series) – this was for a fandom that has a canon amnesia plot, which was interesting because I was really meh about that plotline in canon, but really enjoyed writing that fic, and it helped me clarify what I’m looking for in an amnesia fic.

The thing I like specifically about amnesia as a plot device is that it’s chance for your afflicted character to see their relationships and the other people in their lives from an outside POV. It’s not that I wouldn’t read a serious, medically accurate amnesia fic, it’s just that it wouldn’t be as much fun as the self-indulgent Hollywood amnesia fic that lets you have some angst and some h/c and then another bonk on the head and/or some healing sex, and a happy ending. It’s one of those tropes that have been done so many times in both fanfic and popular media that you have to abandon all sense of shame and just roll around in it.

Which is frankly my motto for most of these tropes.

8. First time together

But possibly kind of incidentally? I think this bullet is supposed to refer specifically to first time having sex together. I love first time/getting together stories, that’s probably 95% of what I’ve written, so I’ve written a lot of fic with a “first time together” scenes. But for me the climax of the story (no pun intended) is the moment of emotional reveal, the I love you scene or the I want to be in a romantic relationship with you scene, not the associated sex scene. To say nothing of friends-with-benefits-to-lovers fic, which I feel covers the letter of the “first time together” trope, but maybe not the spirit? In that the first time together isn’t as important as the nteenth time where everyone’s all, “Oh. OH NO. EMOTIONS.”

Hmm, I don’t think I’ve written wingfic! Which is odd, because I am a sucker for it.

But only if the wings are a secret erogenous zone. If there isn’t a scene where Character A touches Character B’s wings for the first time, marveling at the feel of them, and Character B has to suppress a gasp at how unbearably intimate and erotic the sensation is, don’t waste my time.
