HELP, please.

I'm almost on the edge of crying. I'm trying to write an essay about this book and I can't find anything. I'm not asking you guys to write my essay or anything, I'm just asking for tips or ideas you might have! Please please help me. I'm dying here.

Goldstein

I've been thinking about who may have inspired the character Emmanuel Goldstein. I know a lot of people think he comes from Leon Trotsky.

Like Trotsky Goldstein (that is, if Goldstein existed at all) was of Jewish decent(Goldstein had a Jewish name and a "Jewish face"). I noticed the image of Goldstein described in 1984 is similar to Trotsky:

“could never see the face of Goldstein without a painful mixture of emotions. It was a lean Jewish face, with a great fuzzy aureole of white hair and a small goatee beard—a clever face, and yet somehow inherently despicable, with a kind of senile silliness in the long thin nose near the end of which a pair of spectacles was perched”

Big Brother was described as "black haired, black mustachio’d", a bit like Stalin. Stalin and Trotsky despised each other of course. Trotsky, like Goldstein was a former top member of the party who was expeled, and became a hate figure afterwards (in Stalinist USSR Trotskyists were made to be seen as fascists.)

Another theory I've heard is that Goldstein is inspierd from the anarchist Emma Goldman.

Personaly I think Goldstein is just a propagandist creation of the party, which they use to trap dissidents.

Discuss?

Room 101

'You asked me once,' said O'Brien, 'what was in Room 101. I told you that you knew the answer already. Everyone knows it. The thing that is in Room 101 is the worst thing in the world.'

what do you think you would find in room 101?

DONE!

Bonjour mes ami(e)s!

I decided to read chapters 2 to the end all in one shot. It did take me about 4 and a half hours but it was worth it. Very exciting!

I have just a few things to confess. I did not read the Brotherhood book. Sorry but it was just too boring and I knew it wouldn't effect the storyline all that much. My reasoning for this is that Julia falls asleep while Winston is reading it to her. Hey, if she's allowed to fall asleep and not listen then I can skip it without reading it. I also did not read the whole explanation about Newsspeak. I didn't think it was important to me because I already understood. "Spoiler alert!!!" I did like the ending. It was good and it seemed to give me a sense of closure, but still there could have been more.

Anyway, does anyone know what might have been Julia's "Room 101" if Winston's was rats? I was thinking about it and I couldn't think of anything. I read this on a website and I thought it was hilarious: What if Julia was Winston's sister? LOL! How funny would that be.

Anywho, I might come back with more arguments and such.
Leave me some comments. I love 'em.

(no subject)

Here's just one that I can think of right now;

Why can't Winston and the other girl show love to each other? The Parsons do it. They are married. Why can't they get together and get married?

HELLO! :D

Hi! My name is Jessica! I'm reading "1984" for fun. I really am liking it so far. I was wondering if someone could just help me figure a few things. I have a few questions and since none of my friends are reading it I have no one to chat about it with.

Please no spoilers. I just finished reading chapter ONE.
If anyone is interested in answering a few questions, let me know!

Help please

Hi everyone, I need a little but of help.
I read 1984 for my literature class and I loved it.
Tomorrow I have a mid term about it and the teacher is going to ask us why the author uses the whole
oranges and lemons rhyme and I honestly have no idea.
Could anyone help me?
