Along with sweaters, thick socks,
long johns, scarves, mittens and big ski jackets, winter hats are
an important part of cold season attire. Every part of your body
feels the effects of chilly temperature, but the head is where most
of your own heat escapes. So keeping it covered helps you to stay
warm.
There are many choices in the winter hats industry. Fashion goes
far in its creative mix of appeal and practicality, so not only
are there winter hats with ear laps and soft, heat conserving material,
but many have fringes, stripes, ridges, and a wide array of beautiful
colors.
For children, there are winter hats shaped like animals, Christmas
trees and many other silly and cute shapes. Men’s winter hats
are often styled with brims and made of leather or Teflon coated
materials to keep off the drench from rain and snow. For women,
winter hats are marketed with a variety of designs, both form fitting
and with their own shapes. One of the cutest winter hats that is
back in style is the beret-shaped hat with deep crown and a velvet,
fleece or suede underbrim.
Beanies are one of the most popular winter hats in modern times,
with styles for both men and women. You can purchase beanie winter
hats out of soft and stretchy material, knitted, or cut from fleece.
A stylish version of these warm and comfortable winter hats is the
brim in the front, which is becoming a widespread trend. The advantages
to these form fitting winter hats is that you can easily slip them
in a pocket and they don’t take up a lot space.
It’s easy to make cute winter hats on your own without buying
them, and they make great gifts! The easiest material to use when
constructing winter hats is probably fleece. Fortunately this fabric
also happens to be the most comfortable and soft choice for winter
hats and scarves. You can make fleece winter hats for people of
all ages.

MATERIALS:
Tape measure
1/2 yard fleece fabric
Scissors
Needle and thread
Buttons, appliqués, or felt pieces for decoration
1 yard decorative cord
Time needed: Under 1 Hour
1. First, determine the size of the hat. (To avoid
ruining the surprise, measure the head of someone who is similar
in size to the recipient.) Now cut a piece of fleece thats 16 inches
wide and as long as the measurement you took plus 2 inches.
2. Fold the fleece in half, right side in so the
16-inch edges match up. Sew a 1/2-inch-wide seam along this edge,
stopping 5 inches from the bottom. Just below the last stitch, make
a 1/2-inch cut in from the side. Turn the material right side out.
Now sew a seam along the last 5 inches of unsewn fleece.
3. Roll the bottom of the hat up two turns, so
the cuff conceals the bottom part of the seam. To keep the cuff
from unrolling, sew on a decorative button, an appliqué,
or a felt cutout.
4. Finally, gather the top 3 inches of the hat
and tie a colorful cord around it. You can also cut fringes in this
top part for a cute style!
