About Bytownite
Formula:
(Ca,Na)[Al(Al,Si)Si2O8]
Albite : anorthite molar ratio ranges from 10 : 90 to 30 : 70.
Colour:
Colourless, grey, greenish-white, or white
Lustre:
Sub-Vitreous
Hardness:
6 - 6½
Crystal System:
Triclinic
Name:
Named after its locality ("Bytown," now Ottawa, Ontario, Canada).
A plagioclase feldspar with an albite : anorthite molar ratio ranging from 10 : 90 to 30 : 70.
May show labradorescence (compare labradorite).
The original material, a greenish-white substance, was found in a boulder near Bytown (now Ottawa), and later shown to be a mixture (Robert A. A. Johnston, 1915). This locality now appears to have been lost. Additionally, the original specimens are either extremely rare or no longer exist in collections. Gemmy feldspar pieces are, on occasion, falsely attributed to the original bytownite locality.

Interference Colours:
The colours simulate birefringence patterns seen in thin section under crossed polars. They do not take into account mineral colouration or opacity.
Michel-Levy Bar The default colours simulate the birefringence range for a 30 µm thin-section thickness. Adjust the slider to simulate a different thickness.
Grain Simulation You can rotate the grain simulation to show how this range might look as you rotated a sample under crossed polars.
