This EDID is from a Lenovo P32p-20 4k monitor connected to a ThinkPad P16v Gen 2 laptop (Intel 155H). On other laptops (older thinkpads and macbooks) it works at 4k@60hz but on newer Intel ThinkPads including P16vG2 & X1 Carbon Gen 12 it only works at 4k@30hz. On Windows 11 I can select 59.95hz but then the resolution drops to 2560x1440. Going back to 4k reverts to 30hz. I originally suspected a flakey EDID or Linux decoding it but now I suspect the Intel/ThinkPad hardware. I note it says "EDID conformity: FAIL". The laptop's built-in panel (eDP-1) correctly shows "3840x2400 59.98*" but the external Lenovo monitor (DP-4) only goes to 30hz according to xrandr. OS is OpenSUSE w/KDE + Wayland however I think the desktop environment is unrelated because it's a kernel issue decoding the available modes, right?

  • Interesting issue. -- I doubt the Edid is the reason. Can you check the info of/on the monitor itself? What resolution/refresh is it reporting in its own menus? And could you try an X11 session? Commented Apr 17 at 9:44
  • The monitor firmware says 4k@60hz in both x11 and wayland. Commented Apr 18 at 6:45
  • And what does xrandr report in x11? In wayland it does not even report the correct resolution: 6720x3780 is not 4k, but way higher (3,5 times each side of full hd instead of 2 times). Commented Apr 21 at 18:13
  • if the monitor reports 4k@60Hz, I suspect it to be correct. Commented Apr 21 at 18:13
  • Sorry @RobertSiemer I mean to say monitor reports 4k@30hz in both X11 and Wayland. I'll check xrandr.... Commented Apr 21 at 22:33

Setting the monitor's "USB Source Selection" from USB 3.0 down to USB 2.0 fixed the issue. When USB 3.0 is selected the USB-C connection negotiates a lesser capacity for the DP over USB-C. Or something.

But that still does not explain why the monitor happily does 4k@60hz with USB 3.0 enabled using the USC-C connector on a Mac or older Intel ThinkPad. But to work on newer Intel ThinkPads the P32p-20 monitor must have the "USB Source Selection" reduced to USB 2.0.
